I’m not even disabled and the tail was the first thing I thought of when the dragons left. Hiccup, while desperate in the moment, yeah, cannot possibly be that dumb.

He’s a blacksmith, before everything, he worked in a forge. He would know how risky it is for Toothless to be out there and something happens to the tail or if it gets rusted and breaks from natural wear and tear.

Not only were several characters assassinated for shallow jokes like Snotlout wanting to get with Hiccup’s mom, but Hiccup’s intelligence was thrown out the window. He’s so much smarter than that and the directors just slapped on a shitty bandaid and called it an ending.

Slept away a headache and woke up pissed about a plot point in the HTTYD movies.

"A downed dragon is a dead dragon"

This is a simple fact of the movies, and yet we're expected to trust that Toothless's prosthetic will never break or somehow be damaged enough to need human intervention. I understand if everyone else was swayed into letting their dragons go, but Hiccup? NO, he is Toothless's guaranteed chance at life, and Toothless is no less of a dragon for needing his help! It may not have been intentional, but as a disabled person, I'm offended at the implication that a disabled dragon shouldn't need/have a human around to help simply because he's a dragon. Toothless has just as much a right to life as any other living creature, and if that means he needs a human? Then that means DO NOT SEPARATE THEM!

I refuse to believe the movies that allowed this plot point are canon. The idea of setting Toothless free, sweet as it may seem on the surface, is just not possible considering his disability, and the risks involved in letting him fly without at least having supervision. After all, a downed dragon is a dead dragon.
