📖 Review: Half of a Yellow Sun
✍️ Author: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie 📚 Genre: Historical Fiction 📅 Publication Year: 2006 🧠 Initial Thoughts  Half of a Yellow Sun is a book about love during a time of political revolution. I was floored by the beautiful writing, and the sincerity of it.  🔍 What It’s About The book switches between the perspectives of three different characters who all know each other and are living through…

Review: David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
Narrated by Richard Armitage 3 minutes Charles Dickens is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Before 2023, the only Dickens I had read was A Christmas Carol, and that was for an undergraduate course more than 10 years ago. In 2023, I read A Tale of Two Cities which I loved. In 2024, I read David Copperfield. “Read” is a strong word – I listened to it on audio and I will not lie, part…

Review: Never Lie by Freida McFadden
2 minutes ⭐⭐ Rating: 2 out of 5. Never Lie is the second Freida McFadden book I read within a year, both for the same book club. Never Lie is the story of a newlywed couple looking for their dream home and get snowed into one of the remote properties they were looking at purchasing. Which also happened to belong to a famous psychologist who has been missing, presumed dead for a few years…

Review: Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman
1 minute Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman is a fun story about a father’s adventure to bring milk home for his kids’ breakfast. The story begins with his son getting milk for his Toastios and realizing there is none. His father then leaves him and his sister to go to the store to buy some. After an intolerable amount of time, their father finally returns not only with the milk, but with a…

Review: Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
2 minutes Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf is a stream-of-consciousness novel written a handful of years after the Great World War. The events of the story take place during the span of one day. In the simplest of terms, this is a novel about English society recovering from the war. After such a devastating global event, how does one find the beauty in the everyday while recovering from its …

Rediscovering Reading: A Year of Great Stories
5 minutes It’s been too long since I’ve last written here. So much has happened. I’m hoping that I can get back to dedicating some amount of structured time to posting. I’m glad to report that my reading (including audiobooks) has skyrocketed in the past two years. I’m now part of two book clubs and have a mini book club with my best friend. These reading groups have exposed me to books I never…

Practical Magic: Book vs. movie
SPOILER ALERT: This is a comparison of the book and the movie and may contain spoilers for both. If you would like to read my review on Goodreads, click here. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this particular adaptation (please don’t come at me!). But first, a little background about my history with Practical Magic: I saw Practical Magic for the first time in my adulthood, about 5…

Hi all! I know it’s a little far from February to do my #readingwrapup, but here it is! I fell a little behind, as I have this month, but I am gearing up to move things along in the next couple of weeks. One of my big projects for this month is gathering #booksforkids at my school for #nationalreadingmonth . I love my kids so much and I want to be able to get them all the books they would like. We are doing some reading contests and writing contests, and I have a reading bingo that they are working on - prize being buying them a book! I would be greatly appreciative of any help I can get for gathering books for the library. Thank you to those who already donated last year, the kids are gobbling them up. And as a token of my appreciation, there will be a giveaway associated with these donations. For the giveaway, no purchase is necessary, but if you like and share my giveaway post pinned to the top of my feed, that will count as an entry, just tag your post #athousandbookstoreadbloggiveaway I appreciate any donations, and any help spreading the word. Thank you! #bookstagram #bookgiveaway #kidsreading #booklover https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp9CkmFrvrP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Women, Race, & Class by Angela Y. Davis: A Summary of Key Points
Women, Race & Class was a recommendation from a book club I used to be in years ago. Unfortunately I never finished it so I am glad I was able to start over and see it through until the end. I have lately been using my reading not only to escape into fantasy, but also to thrust myself into the realities of our society. What follows here is a brief intro to Angela Y. Davis and the key points of…

International Holocaust Remembrance Day
The UN General Assembly designated January 27 and the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005. The Holocaust Encyclopedia says, ‘The purpose of International Holocaust Remembrance Day is two-fold: to serve as a date for official commemoration of the victims of the Nazi regime and to promote Holocaust education throughout the world.” In remembrance, and in proper bookish fashion, I wanted…

January 27th is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The UN General Assembly designates this day back in 2005 with the purpose of commemorating the victims of the Holocaust as well as to promote education on the Holocaust world wide. These are a few books from my shelves about the Holocaust. Pictured: Maus I&II by Art Spiegelman. The author tells his grandfather’s story in comic book format The Night Journey by Kathryn Lasky: A teenage girl spends time with her great-grandmother who begins to tell her the story of her childhood as a young Jewish girl in Russia Anne Frank - needs no introduction. Not pictured: The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak I will be posting a list of other books related to the Holocaust that are in my TBR which I hope is useful to you as well in your reading. Is there any related reading you recommend? #holocaustremembranceday #holocaust #holocaustremembrance #holocaustbooks #bookstagram #bookblogger #theresabookforthat #thenightjourney #maus #kathrynlasky #artspiegelman #annefrank #recommendedreading #tbr #books #reading #readmorebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CoBwe2vLt7q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

MLK Jr. and Day of Racial Healing
MLK Jr. and Day of Racial Healing
In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Day of Racial Healing in the United States, I want to dedicate some time to exploring anti-racism and recommend some reading. “What Does it Mean to be Anti-Racist?” To be anti-racist is not simply being “not racist.” Racism is structural and systemic. Being “not racist” is a passive response which ignores 400 years of history and how modern…
