 After dying horrifically, Jo is given a second chance at life, a chance to becomes what is known as a Guardian. She helps spirits move between life and death. As a Guardian, there are only four rules to follow. One fated afternoon, Jo finds herself breaking three of the four rules and lets a young girl survive. This decision sends Jo on a journey to a place she never thought she'd go. If given the chance, would you be able to forgive your murderer?

King of Diamonds

The level was open, uninterrupted by walls. It was dark and the large windows were tinted so heavily in red it was hard to see the bustling city of Arket. An assortment of couches, lounges, and tables were scattered around the space. Three small stages, complete with shiny chrome poles, sat against the back wall.

Kit found herself alone, save for one man.

King sat on a couch in the center of the space, holding a crystal glass filled with a luminous purple liquor. He watched Kit closely as she approached. With a deep breath, she walked up to him and sat across from him on a stiff leather chair.

"Kit Tane," he said slowly. "It's nice to see you again."

Kit gave a short nod as she looked over the individual in front of her. She had been the communication between the ESA and the man known simply as 'King' for nearly three (Earthen) years. In three years, she had been unable to make any kind of arrest. He truly was a 'king' among the universe's criminals. He was untouchable.

King was younger than she had first expected him to be with dark hair that was interrupted by a streak of white just above his left eye. He was tall, but not particularly formidable. However, he held an air of importance and danger.

"How can I ensure my safety during this meeting?" Kit asked.

"Do you see any guns pointed at you?" King raised his arms and gestured to the open space.

Kit smirked as she glanced at the man before her. "There are much more creative ways to kill me than a bullet."

Aster let out a breath when she realized that she only knew three, rather vague things about where she was. She reached for the little locket that hung around her neck.

"I'm sorry, mom," she sighed and laid back against the cold wall. "I should've asked you. This is all my fault, I'm sure you're worried sick."

She thought about Demi and the warmth of her mother's apartment. She thought about everything that she should have asked her when she had the chance.

"I'm so sorry, mom," she said again.

"That's a new nickname, I'm not sure I like it."

"Amseo," Aster sat up. "Are you alright? What happened?"

"I'm fine," he said despite not sounding 'fine'. "They've been asking me about…my crimes. They think I know more than I actually do."

Aster wasn't sure what to say to that. "Sorry," she said quietly.

"Aster, I…" he said suddenly. "I need to ask something important of you. I want to get you out of here too, I want us to both escapes. But for that to happen, I'm going to need something from you, alright?"

"Alright, what do you need?"

"I need you to be quiet for a while. I'm going to get out of this cell and then get you out of there, but I need you to stay quiet. Not a word, do you understand?"

Aster snorted. "I'm not a child. I can be quiet."

"I know, but you are…inquisitive. And I'm pretty sure you're going to have some questions, it's best if you keep them to yourself until we get out of here."

"Deal," Aster said.

"Good," Amseo agreed. "Silence starts now."
