One thing I hate more than the characterisation in the HP fandoms is people making Harry hate James or see him less or make Harry think James deserved everything bad.

It's canon that Harry was confused and hurt after SWM because he only knew his dad for 15 months when he was a baby before his dad died for him. Harry knows that. He accepted James shad flaws and he felt empathy for Snape in SWM because he knows how it feels to be humiliated. That doesn't mean he wishes Snape was his father instead of James. He hates Snape and wished death upon him (HBP). He knew he had a connection to his dad with his Patronus and kept that connection. A few chapters after SWM, Harry was smiling because Ron reminded him of his dad.

In DH, the only reason Harry didn't directly talk to James is because he physically couldn't build a physical connection with James, their only connection being their matching Patronus and Harry's memory of James.

Harry didn't talk to James or Lily fully directly because he didn't have that connection. Harry loves James.

God forbid a child loves their father.

I'm not going to be content until I say this, but the fandom has completely mischaracterised James. They either make him a mean, non-loyal, rude friend who doesn't care for anyone, or they make him an intense people pleaser. James is much more complex because we have two sides to him, one that's more private, and one that's a bit ruder to future death eaters.

On James' darker part, he's still against blood superiority. So much that he couldn't stand the word and went "You-know-what". We have Lily saying, "Hex anyone that annoys you" in Ootp, and that gave James anti's an argument, intercepting it as James hexing anyone, including little first years. Bullying is not okay and can have bad consequences, but people calling James a bully is a bit exaggerated. The only person we know he targeted was Severus. And you know what Severus was? A death eater, blood supremacist, dark-magic loving, Voldemort supporter, stalker, obsessive, hypocrite, bigoted and etc. I'm not saying sexist, homophobic, rap!st or like that, that's utter nonsense.

However-

Death eater, even early on - Lily confronting him about wanting to be a death eater, he didn't deny it. He loved Voldemort and later joined him.

Blood supremacist - Hate towards Petunia since she was a muggle, open blood supremacist afterwards and only excused Lily, she confirmed it.

Dark-magic loving - Sirius saying Severus knew more dark magic than older years. Using an unknown cutting curse on James that was deep enough to splatter blood down to his robes. Sectumsempra - we know the consequences of it - because Severus' best spell. A death eater.

Voldemort supporter - the above

Stalker - How he watched Lily from the bush, watched her many times, followed James, Sirius, Peter and Remus around obsessively, obsessively tried to out Remus - even as an adult - and went through Petunia's private stuff, meaning they went in her room.

Obsessive - Stalked Lily, watched her from out, several times, tried to out Lily's son and husband just so he could have her, tried ot out the four boys. Lily's letter and ripping the photo of her from it and her signature.

Hypocrite and bigot - Being a half-blood, but a blood supremacist, loving Slytherin and being unfair and bullying the other houses.

Back with James, he's a teenager who was doted on. I'm not saying anything else about his childhood because we don't know exactly how he was raised. he was popular, genius, good at quidditch and just that teenager in the 70's. people confuse that with many things, but they forget that he was spoken well of nearly everyone, even Voldemort commented on James a few times. Hagrid said that Harry mum and dad were kind people. He didn't say parents, nor just Lily, he said Lily and James.

James supporters will go "He was a bully, but matured.", but don't forget, as a teen, James was friends with outcasts. When he found out his friend was a werewolf, he didn't out or bully him, he became and Animagus and planned it from 12-years-old, becoming one at 15. James was a wealthy, pure blood, owner-of-invisibility-cloak Potter, but he still went against everything and stood out for equality for wizards, witches, muggles and etc. He fought against Voldemort at 17 while losing his parents.

But James isn't a people pleaser either. He was blunt and honest, wasn't a fake friend or pretended to like someone or went out of his way to please them. However, while he wasn't a people pleaser, he did go to try and reduce how he was feeling. Shown when Lily said that James was trying to hide how being locked up was, but she could tell. Then again when James tries to shrug off his feelings in Ootp. That doesn't mean he was a pleaser, but that doesn't mean he'll go out of his way to announce how he's feeling, especially to his friends. Also, James having flaws doesn't make him a bad person, everyone was mean or cruel in a way, especially in the wizarding world. Pantsing, ding-dong ditching, being a bit cruel was everything in the 70's. And in the wizarding world, pure bloods and wizard raised haven't caught up to muggle "trends".
