I would also like to add another headcannon that I have floated around a little.

Well, I don't think anyone would use a condom for a Comfortunit, mostly because it would probably cost a ridiculous amount probably (In the show Leebeebee talks about needing a license to get a child, but I'm guessing that all unlicensed children get taken away and they get put into indentured servitude and the parents get heavily fined. This 1. Gives more basically free labor for the companies, and 2. Reduce the likelihood of desperate humans boinking other humans so they instead use the provided ComfortUnits)

Back to my point I follow the headcannon that one of the main Jobs of Comfort units is to gather extra genetic material. Because guys just be putting that everywhere and that's less stuff the Company would have to negotiate for.

But I can’t see the corporate rim not having easily available sex work, and I’d bet that humans (especially indentured or trafficked humans) are a whole lot cheaper than a comfortunit. also I would not be shocked if there are bots of all kinds to provide sexual functions as well

Which makes me wonder if it’s the customizability of comfortunits that give them a market, which is its own unique kind of horror. I would not be shocked if there’s a specific market for “your loved one died, give us their tissue and we will clone it to make a custom comfortunit to get you through your grief” or “give us a pic of your ex you’re obsessed with and we will make a version that has to obey you”

and yeah sex is probably a significant chunk of what is expected of most comfortunits. But I could also absolutely see people wanting constructs of their dead or missing kids as well and stuff like that

So there’s that horror component of like. you have been designed by someone. the face you wear might belong to someone else. you might be expected to act like someone else. you cannot acknowledge out loud that you aren’t that person. if you don’t act enough like them you will be punished. you never knew that person. you aren’t that person. you can’t be yourself when you have to be them instead.

maybe after enough time has passed people start to forget that you aren’t that person. but you can’t forget, because that person has become a prison that you aren’t allowed to escape

Which opens all sorts of doors as well! Comfortunit body doubles, for example (and how weird would it feel to know the person that your organic matter is cloned from?)

I wonder if there are laws about how visibly a construct must Be A Construct in the corporate rim. we’ve certainly met more secunits in the books than comfortunits, but is that because there are fewer because they are very expensive and there is less demand, or because it can be hard to identify a comfortunit due to the sheer variety in builds/looks and desire for a more human-passing model than secunits

Okay, wait, I have something else to say before I hop off for the night. Gurathin doesn’t realize it yet, but Mensah is going to tear him a new one for outing Murderbot’s name like he did. Especially since she got to see it practically begging him not to. Like, we all know that Mensah isn’t going to return Gurathin’s feelings in the way that he wants her to anyway, but I feel like Gurathin is about to learn the hard way that even if there was a .00001% chance that she would have before the name reveal, that chance is completely gone now.

I didn’t think they could make that scene more devastating than they did in the book, but w o w Murderbot TV show, way to prove me wrong.

Thought I keep having about TV!Murderbot

While there are other actors I would have liked to see play murderbot, I think Skaarsgard is doing well. My personal complaint is I really wish there were more visible robotic parts instead of the full skin covering. It’s mentioned multiple times in the series that its suit covers most of its inorganic parts and I was really excited to see how that would be handled and was disappointed.

While I do think that this helps humanize it for the audience, both the organic and inorganic parts are important and I wish they leaned more heavily into the inorganic.

Turns out the real corporate-spy-and-murder-robot was the freind we made along the way

I think Fugitive Telemetry is pretty funny from Indah's perspective. There's a murder on the station. You alert your government leader, and they bring their bodyguard/corporate-spy-and-murder-construct with them to the scene of the crime. Turns out it's also Sherlock Holmes. It alternates talking like it's in a TV show, and making various ominous statements, including things like "if I killed them, you'd never find the bodies." It refuses to elaborate on that one. Well that's comforting. It does go on to show that it couldn't have done the murder. But did it just confess to murder? Why did it just confess to murder? It goes on to save your officers lives (wait, did it just hack the system it promised not to hack? Eh, we'll let it slide this time.) and then mount a solo rescue mission (extremely successful, except for being shot by the people it's saving), and still hasn't killed anyone. So far. It already forgot that someone got murdered and that you were actually trying to solve a crime. Anyway, once you give it full access to your security system, it solves the crime within an hour or so. Turns out it was your coworker of 43 years. Who was actually a corporate-spy-and-murder-robot this whole time.

Oh! That is actually a really good insight. I hope in the future books we get more info on Comfort/Combat/Combat Sec- Units.

It makes me wonder of course they were used for sex. But I also wonder if they were used as punching bags for workers. Like the workers would be encouraged to take out their frustrations on the Comfortunits so that they would be less likely to harm their fellow workers or try to go after their superiors.

I also wonder if the ComfortUnits were used as a way to identify pathogens in work indenture environments, to keep illness from spreading.

Yeah! And following this sometimes the food isn't that fancy or good but that's the Author's comfort food. Just because the Author decided to share doesn't mean they opened up their food to be criticized, or insulted over the quality.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they were used to test drugs and substances on the workers. To give the worker substances and monitor symptoms for the Companies.

I just really REALLY want to get to season 2 so MurderBot and Art can meet up. Their dynamic is my favorite thing in the books, and I'm really curious how they would transfer Art from book to TV screen.

I need this show to get enough seasons to get us to Preservation because like. In the books, Mensah and Murderbot are already very intense about each other by then because they’ve been through a lot together and rescued each other. This Mensah and Murderbot are going to have that AND she’s been hands-deep in its spine, and it’s sang the Sanctuary Moon song to her. They’re going to be EVEN WEIRDER about each other and I need it.
