I recently found myself in a position where others expected me to rep mlm for the queer community since they knew me as gay. But I realized the way they use gay, as mlm, is different from the way I’ve used gay, as queer. For a long time I’ve let the mlm label sit with me, but it doesn’t feel right and never really has. As someone who has only had sex with cis men and has only seriously dated cis men, it feels silly of me to consider another label. Yet, I do find other genders sexually and romantically attractive. To a select few in my life, I have used the term bisexual to identify my sexuality, but I find it often implies a stronger attraction to cis women than I typically experience. I also find the term not inclusive enough for other gender identities I feel attraction to like trans men, trans women, nonbinary folks, etc. The obvious answers remain would be that I’m pansexual, right? Well, I’m not confident in saying I’m attracted to ALL genders and I certainly do not experience that attraction equally. Additionally, I find that someone’s gender almost always plays a role in whether I’m attracted to them or not… The consensus is still not in on a new label for myself, but that’s the rant.
