Habbo Hotel about Safer Internet Day 2020
About Habbo Hotel’s SID activities
For this year's Safer Internet Day (SID) campaign Habbo have prepared two new games and a multiple choice quiz.
The theme for the first game will deal with encouraging users to create a more positive online environment for them and the people around them. In this game, Habbos will compete against a "troll" user whose main objective is to create chaos and drama inside the game. We want to show our users that the internet can be a wonderful place if we all do our part and remember to always stay safe.
Positive Vibes Only! We've all experienced first hand just how toxic the internet can be, but this time we want to show you just how a little positivity goes a long way both online and in real life. How to play: - A troll is going around Habbo bullying your friends, your mission will be too stop him before it's too late. - Step on the red tiles in order to reach your friends. - Make sure all the tiles have turned green for the bot to go away. - Once the bot has left, the black doors will open allowing you to move forward. - You will have to move quickly, you only have 8 seconds to help each friend. - After you've gotten rid of the bot, take the teleport to continue. Good luck!
For our second game, a bot will represent a case where a user gets his account hacked by accessing a suspicious link they receive. In the game, Habbos will be faced with a similar situation and they will need to take all the necessary steps to keep their accounts safe from hackers and people trying to take advantage of them.
Safety First! Lately you've been having a hard time accessing your Habbo account and you have that horrible feeling that someone is trying to hack into it... Luckily it's not too late! You can still fight back and take the necessary measures to protect your account and all your precious furnis. How to play: - Protect your account by avoiding the hacking attempts (pink toys) the hacker is sending your way. - Once you've scored 9 points, your password will be changed and you'll need to pull the lever to continue. - Your next step will be to turn the safety lock feature on. - Unfortunately the hacker will not give up that easily... Make sure you use the cannon to get rid of his last attempts to access your account. - Once you've scored 5 points the safety lock on your account will be enabled. - Don't forget to pull the lever to collect your prize!
In addition to the two games, Habbo has also made a short quiz with questions that will help raise awareness of internet use and threats. An example question is
Q1. You're browsing the web when all of a sudden an ad pops up showing you an offer for the shoes you've been wanting for so long! They're only $20. What do you do?
The questions in the quiz are all linked to the SID 2020 slogan "Together for a better internet". For each activity, users will win a virtual SID badge and the monthly prize Habbo Furni. Like Habbo have done in the past, they will change their profile image to include the SID logo as a way of showing our support.
What Habbo Hotel is doing to support the SID 2020 slogan of "Together for a better internet"…
From the very first moment teens step into our virtual Hotel, Sulake / Habbo want them to know that they can enjoy themselves without offending anyone, and that being tolerant when it comes to the opinions of and differences between others is the way to go. All players need to follow The Habbo Way, a code of conduct, a guide to how they should act in the Hotel. Those breaking the rules are not welcome and might be banned.
There is also a certain community spirit, driven by initiatives such as the Habbo Ambassadors, a group of experienced, mature Habbos whose main mission is to welcome new users to the hotel and show them the Habbo ropes. They also support our Habbo Way and give advice to community members on how to surf safely.
We are a community that is aware of our rights but, above all, we work to create a community that is conscious of its responsibilities.

The internet can be a really wonderful place
It’s changed the way we learn and research, the way we connect with others, and the way we express ourselves in positive, powerful ways. But it’s no secret that these improvements also present us with unique challenges. We can learn new things faster, but sometimes we have to sort through piles of misinformation while we do—and it’s not always easy to detect. We’re able to connect with people we never would have met otherwise thanks to social media, but it can encourage addictive behavior in the apps that keep us connected. We’re able to express ourselves more easily, but we sometimes overshare in ways detrimental to our careers, reputation, and mental health.
We—as in Tumblr the company—are not immune to these challenges. You know it. We know it. And we hear you. We recognize that toxicity and negativity happen everywhere online, even on Tumblr. We are constantly striving to learn and utilize new ways to create a safe place for our communities. Opening up this dialogue to anyone who wants to join is the first step we’re taking in 2020 to foster a more positive, collaborative experience. Over the next year, we’ll be rolling out improvements and updates to our platform that improves your experience.
We can all agree that these challenges exist, but let’s look out for each other; Teach other people and ourselves how to keep the wonderful parts of the internet in view while working through the troublesome bits. These issues are best addressed through honest, open dialogue.
That’s why we’ve partnered with the UK non-profit, Ditch the Label (@ditchthelabel), to help spread some internet safety awareness as well as facilitate some much-needed conversation between yourselves—the community on Tumblr.
We’re calling it World Wide What
At the heart of this campaign is, well, you. We want to hear from you. Over the next month we’ll focus on six different topics with accompanying videos for discussion. Each one will feature a different real-world problem you’ve most likely faced as an Extremely Online Person (yeah, we see you) and what you can do to mitigate those issues. They’re live right now:
“Fake News, Skewed Views”
“Don’t @ Me” (Cyberbullying)
“Authenticity Online”
“Pull Down to Refresh”
“Felt Cute Might Delete Later”
“A Safer Internet: Moderation”
Some posts will be accompanied by Answer Times with guests that can speak knowledgeably about one or more of the topics we’re focusing on. We’re looking at:
1/8 – @medialiteracyed taking questions about fake news
1/15 – @ditchthelabel opening up their ask box to discuss cyberbullying
1/22 – Jameela Jamil, founder of I Weigh, to answer questions about the effects of inauthentic social media personalities
TBD – Someone from the leadership team here at Tumblr to talk about user safety
One of the more beautiful qualities of the Tumblr community is that so many of you spare the time and space to look out for others. If you have someone in your life that you think could use a little guiding light to use social media in a safer way for their mental or physical health, this might be a good resource to send them.
You can stay tuned for more updates on World Wide What, including when our Answer Times go live, by following this blog. If you want to be notified the moment a post from us goes live, tap or click the silhouette at the top of our page and select “Get notifications.”
In the meantime, we want to hear from you. What kind of impact has social media had on your mental health? If you want to start a conversation with the community, reblog this post or make a new one and tag it so others can easily find it.
#WorldWideWhat

What has 2020 to bring for Habbo Hotel?
First of all, happy new year to all of you. We hope that your wishes may come true, let’s go on point should we?
Habbo Hotel
So as you know, if you have followed the news on Habbo Hotel... This year it’s about to get excited because Habbo 2020 will be released! As we can’t say when it will be released, we are excited as you are.
So let’s get this straight, let’s get a full overview of the #Habbo2020 project as what we know so far...
HABBO 2020 PROGRESS UPDATE
The first update of Habbo 2020 was released by 7th of October on 2019, below are the following information.
The new client is being built with Unity, a cross-platform game engine.
As time progresses, we'll be able to go into more detail about specific features and how they will look. Examples include Habbo profiles, the Marketplace, etc.
While the new client will look and feel very similar to Habbo as it exists today, some things will look and function differently.
_
1: LEVEL 2: CHAT HISTORY 3: CHAT BUBBLE COLOUR 4. GROUP ICON 5. BUILD MODE 6. ROOM INFO 7. THE NAVIGATOR 8. INVENTORY 9. PEOPLE 10. SETTINGS 11. PURSE 12. SHOP 13: PENDING INCOME _Please note that this is an early version of the client, so some elements could easily change.
After the release of the first early preview, Habbo released again in the same month other information recordings to Habbo 2020.
**
HABBO 2020 UI **
Earlier this month, we gave you a first look at Habbo 2020's UI. The reaction was mixed and we wanted to make sure the community is as informed as it can be.
Firstly, we'd like to reiterate that Habbo 2020 is an entirely new client. It's being built from the ground up with with Unity, a cross-platform game engine. We're certainly not just replicating the Habbo mobile app for people who log into Habbo from a desktop device!
Secondly, we'd like to point out that the screenshot we shared was just an example of how Habbo 2020 will look on one device. It will be scalable and will adapt to the device you play on. We'll be able to show more of the UI in the coming weeks.
Finally, we'd like to reassure everyone that Habbo 2020 will be available to play on desktop. This means that if you prefer to play Habbo on a laptop, Macbook, PC or any other desktop device, you'll be able to play Habbo 2020 as normal.
After 2 months, Habbo came back with another update about Habbo 2020. This time about another screenshot preview.
**
HABBO 2020'S LOOKS EDITOR**
As we finish off more and more of Habbo 2020's features, we want to ensure we keep you all up to date and aware of what the client will actually look like before its release next year.
The new client's looks editor is largely similar to the existing one in a practical sense, but as you can see from the picture below it is cosmetically quite different.
Please note that the client we've pictured is still an early version, so some elements could easily change and probably will.
Let us know what you think of the looks editor using the #Habbo2020 hashtag on social media!
As we can say, keep your mind and eyes open on official social pages and hotels of Habbo, for upcoming updates about Habbo 2020.

Exploring online sexual violence and misogyny in gaming at the Safer Internet Forum + Habbo Hotel & Hotelhideaway Safety
It’s well known that sexism is significant in #gaming, but how does it manifest itself? How do female gamers experience it & protect themselves? Lavina McLean shared some insights from her research at #SIF2019; read it now in the latest #BIKbulletin (via @safeinternetday on Twitter)
On Thursday, 21 November 2019, the Safer Internet Forum (SIF) took place in Brussels, Belgium. With a theme of "From online violence to digital respect", it also celebrated 20 years of safer/better internet funding by the European Commission. Below, read the summary of a deep dive session on online sexual violence and misogyny in gaming, led by Lavinia McLean, Head of the Department of Humanities at the Technological University Dublin.
Lavinia McLean, Head of the Department of Humanities at the Technological University Dublin began her session by providing an overview of female gamers' experiences of harassment in online gaming. There has been a lot of research on that topic; an interesting statistic is those female gamers represent almost half of those who play videogames, according to a study carried out by United Kingdom Interactive Entertainment in 2016. The social aspects of gaming are becoming a significant motivational factor for both men and women, according to another study conducted by the Entertainment Software Association in 2018. The structural factors within gaming encourage players to increasingly seek social interactions. There are individual differences depending on the partners the player communicates with during gaming. The aim of this deep dive session was, therefore, to look into how negative social interactions impact women.
Social interactions are numerous and important in gaming. Gaming strengthens pre-existing relationships (for example, a female gamer is introduced to gaming by her father or brother), and emotionally sensitive players make more online friendships. Studies have shown that social support in gaming represents a significant motivation for female gamers. However, female gamers in particular also have many negative interactions in gaming, such as harassment and sexual harassment; sex-role stereotyping; cyberbullying (which has been proven to be higher among female and LGBTI gamers); and linguistic profiling (hearing the female player's voice). Females reported being treated differently to male gamers in online gaming, often excluded, and they felt like their value is not recognised, even though they are doing well in the game. The threat of being stereotyped led many female gamers to underperform in games, and notably to avoid using their microphone to communicate verbally with other players.
After this presentation, Lavinia McLean organised activity with participants, who split into groups. She presented three different female gamer profiles and distributed a set of quotes to each group. Based on these quotes, participants had to describe the person's gaming identity: whether they are a serious gamer, a non-gamer, a part-time gamer, or a female gamer. They also had to consider the gamer's behaviour online, other people's behaviour towards them, and what impact this had. Based on this information, participants had to guess which female gamer profile the sets of quotes corresponded to.
"Isabelle is 19, describes herself as shy with a small number of friends. She enjoys gaming daily and spends a large portion of her free time playing online games with others. She has made some friends online but regularly leaves games and clans and changes the games she plays."
"Kate is 53 and plays games in the evening time and weekends online. If people ask what her hobbies are, she describes enjoying cooking, talking to friends on social media and going for walks. Her close friends do not know anything about her gaming hobby."
"Michelle is 25 and was introduced to gaming by her two brothers at age 4. She enjoyed playing games as a child and teenager with them online, even after they all moved away from each other. She has stopped gaming in the last year."
After this activity, a discussion on the outcomes of the game followed. Because of the toxic environment in gaming, the lack of social support and the impact of negative interactions, female gamers feel stress and anxiety and feel like they have new insecurity which they do not need. How do they deal with it? Many female gamers choose not to show they are females, and therefore put internal pressure on themselves, which creates a tense environment for women. This leads them to deny their identity as a female gamer. Women often feel that they need to prove themselves in gaming, like female gamers. What Lavina McLean wanted to emphasise with the three female gamer profiles described above is that none of the three figures has had a choice in shaping their identity. They are female gamers because their gender had a huge impact on their experience.
In general, female gamers are quite accepting of this situation; they take the burden of managing other people's negative behaviours upon themselves, rather than doing something to change this negative environment. But how do we change this negative environment? A first step is by preventing harassment and sexual harassment of women in gaming, but also by adopting a "netiquette", by empowering women and not accepting the current situation as normal. People with a wide audience reach need to roleplay appropriate game playing.

Habbo Hotel & Hotel Hideaway
Interesting to read, Since Sulake has begun the start of Habbo – the world's most popular social hangout for teens, it’s still standing after almost 20 years, with of course some up and downs, but they are stable.
“Sulake is a social entertainment company focused on providing a safe and fun online service for self-expression.” Since the human moderation on Habbo have left the building, Sulake came up with automated moderation ( provided by twohatsecurity - Community Sift ) Read the full case study here about Habbo Hotel.
With Sift we have effectively reduced moderation, with about 70% of mod workload having been reduced. The remaining moderation efforts goes towards reviewing CFHs (call for helps, aka user generated reports) that are mostly not actionable since users aren’t being exposed to bad content in the first place. This is giving time back to our mods who are able to engage with the community and otherwise focus on the user experience.
- Giorgo Paizanis, VP, Habbo
Community Sift is changing our organization and how we work. - Giorgo Paizanis, VP, Habbo
Since the coming of Azerion (former OrangeGames), we believe Habbo & Hotel Hideaway have a great future ahead waiting for the new generation. Not only based on safety and aware but also on staying on the gaming market, as Habbo & Hotel Hideaway are improving their safety/security knowledge, time to time.
How can Habbo / Hotelhideaway help our users staying aware and being prepared in these situations?
Well if we talk about Habbo Hotel, there are many users with experience, also some users have special role in-game, they been called Ambassadors. These are just users with a lot of experience based on game activity and knowledge.
The perfect way the let (new) users know about the latest safety news, or how to prevent sexually content/intimidation/violence. also, some help organizations from other hotels are stopping by for a little chat.
Not only that but also on their Customer Support page, which can be found here, there are a lot of answers on most frequented questions. (also on security/safety)
When we go to Hotelhideaway, it’s a little bit another audience, since this is just only a mobile gaming app for young adults (17+) but that doesn’t mean there is sexual content. Also the chats, CFH’s are moderated by twohatsecurity - community Sift, and most frequented questions are answered on the support site of Hotelhideaway.
Be aware, get informed & stay safe.

Habbo is a great place with great people but just like every online community, there will be some who try to ruin your online experience...
Scams that happen within the hotel mostly revolve around getting a user to visit an outside website. These websites are “phishing” sites, which fraudulently steal your personal information and are made to look like a legitimate website. The site may ask for your Habbo email and password or other private information to gain access to your account.
Here is an example of a common phishing scam that's found within gift and trophy descriptions, “WOW! How did you get so many votes on (scam site)?”. Scammers usually try to pass gifts/trophies off by putting “Staff” in the description so you think it's safe to visit the website. But remember, the senders' real user name will always be at the bottom, in the right-hand corner of the gift or trophy description. If you receive a scam gift it's safe to open, just don't visit the website!
Some giveaways are fake and try to phish for your information as well. Giveaways with wired messages, sticky notes or a room owner that asks you to visit an outside website to win furni/credits is likely a scam if it's not an official Habbo fansite. There is no such thing as a free credit website, so don't fall for that either! You can find a list of official Habbo fansites here.
As of late, there have been a lot of mafia groups popping up around the hotel. Some of these mafia groups engage in illegal activities such as: doxing (exposing your personal information, online), blackmailing, threatening and harassing other players. Not all mafia groups are dangerous, some are just role players who have no malicious intent, as it should be. Remember to never share your personal information with anyone on Habbo. This includes your last name, address, phone number, social media websites, messenger app. accounts etc. Sharing personal information like this can also result in a sanction! Any contact outside of Habbo should be avoided. If you see any illegal activity going on within the hotel please report it to the help tool immediately.
For extra protection you should always have the Safety Lock feature activated on your account, this prevents hackers from accessing it. You can enable this feature by going to Settings>Account Protection. There you will select 2 secret questions but remember to write down the answers somewhere and keep them in a safe place!
Please, utilize the help tool if you see any suspicious activity within the hotel, whether it be reporting someone, a room or a forum post. Let's keep the community safe, together we can keep toxicity at bay and keep Habbo at its best!
