"The Heroine Of Pain"

I just completed two custom orders through my Etsy shop, which I was so so so happy to receive! ✨ Now before receiving those orders, I'd sorta kinda taken a 3-month long break in terms of drawing, just for me... and for the pure fun of it. This was truly odd and uncomfortable for me because simply put, drawing has always been something that’s made me immensely happy! Putting in the time to draw has always really meant putting the time on me and what makes me happy. Without diving into the whole “Why did you quit doing something you love for 3 months?”, I’d rather answer the question “Why did you start again?” which would be this: “Because I now know, with certainty, that I deserve to do things that make me happy, no matter how long they take, no matter how much effort they require, no matter how others feel about it. No one takes the same pathway to happiness as someone else does, and so I’ll stop fighting it - this is mine”. 

. I'm now slowly getting back into the rhythm of things & getting back to me (it had to happen someday!) and finally, getting back to sharing the process on the Intraweb. Because, well, why the hell not! ;)  . . 🏵️Frida Khalo paved the pathway for this piece🏵️ Still known in Mexico as "la heroína del dolor" - meaning "the heroine of pain". Art historian Nancy Deffebach described Kahlo as someone who “created herself as a subject who was female, Mexican, modern, and powerful”. By using her paintings as a way to question the construction of female identity within Mexican society, she made sure that her artistic heritage became synonymous with her important role, as a fierce feminist icon.

She turned 10 in February and last weekend, she asked if I could draw her! So no hesitation, I pulled out my camera and said: “Ok girl! Strike a pose!” This is the cute/silly/awesome face I got! “ Barbra ” Digital illustration inspired by the opening scene in “FunnyGirl”.  Gift for my mamma - Christmas 2017. I have such amazing memories of watching this movie with her, which just happens to be one of her all-time favourite classics! The sparkle I’d catch in my mother’s eyes as she would introduce to me all the characters on screen - the way she’d carry Barbra’s famous vibrato as she’d join in on “People” - the way her heart jumped and broke all together with Fanny Bryce’s performance. To top it all off, the three of us all share a pretty similar looking schnoz, which Barbra proudly displayed with confidence. How could I not love her in some way myself? . She was amazing, just like my mom ❤️ . . I got 36 expressions! Sweet as pie to tough as leather! And that's 36 expressions more than all those Baltimores put together.
