Well soRRRRRyyyy for explaining how Meta is the driving force behind the RESTRICT Act and it's all a ploy to crush competition for US tech monopolies while manufacturing consent with fundamentally baseless 'national security concerns' when you asked me how my day was. so, uh...

fellow americans (actually, everyone) please go and read/listen to the s.686 - restrict act document; aka –

the "tik tok ban"

and sure. the bill includes some stuff on monitoring certain transactions between the united states and "foreign adversaries." however, this evaluation of transactions will basically give the government even more access to literally everything else. in fact, section 5 of this document begins the listing of the software/hardware/etc that will be prioritized during evaluations; these are including, but not limited to:

wireless local area networks

mobile networks

cloud-based or distributed computing and data storage

content delivery services

desktop applications

mobile applications

gaming applications

payment applications

and more

so, yeah... everything. kudos to @/chiefgyk3d on tiktok for explaining this to me like i am five. (here's the link to his video that basically says the same thing as all this! he's actually still posting and educating about this as well.)

i'd also like to point out a statement in (in sect. 5) that reads, "software designed or used primarily for connecting with and communicating via the internet that is in use by greater than one million persons in the u.s. at any given point during the year" and blah blah blah. which is... probably already happening at this point, but them putting that into writing just shows how little they care at this point and how dumb they think we are.

the government is going on and on, crying about how tiktok is a threat to our privacy and the good of the nation, yet this bill allows them to do the exact same thing. and worse.

so it's not just "ban tiktok." it's "allow us even more access into your lives because we want to make orwell's little book he wrote in 1949 our reality."

if you're like me and don't want this to happen (!), contact your representatives. email. call (gross i know, but). sent letters. do we know if it'll make any difference in this outcome? no.

but we gotta try, right?

If you are from the United States, I'm urging you to sign these petitions.

1) They're calling it a "Tiktok ban" but it isn't gonna stop at Tiktok. It'll change the internet as a whole. This bill allows them to access EVERYTHING, your wifi networks, your gaming systems, your bank accounts, other social media apps, and etc. If they don't like what you're doing or what you're promoting, you can get fined or imprisoned. If you try to use VPNs to access apps, like Tiktok, that they have banned, you can go to prison. This bill is them trying to censor US citizens voices and it is a direct violation of the first amendment.

2) They are trying to get rid of ICWA which protects Indigenous families and keeps Indigenous children from being ripped away from their family and placed into white Christian households. This is evil and vile. PLEASE sign this one.

Also, here is how you can find the representative of your district in congress. Email or call them and express your anger towards them and some of these bills. Make sure you let them know that A LOT of people will be furious and willing to take action if any of these bills are passed. But most importantly, threaten their position and threaten to vote them out. At the end of the day, they only care about holding onto their seats and power.

Actually incredibly concerning and scary how much I am NOT seeing people talk about the RESTRICT outside of TikTok because they're being successfully distracted by our politicians framing this as just a TikTok ban. If you have not read this bill yet I am begging you to do so and then contact your representatives about it. This is a gross overreach by our government and clearly violates the first amendment in this country. If this bill passes it will give our government free reign to censor or ban any internet service with over a million users -- including things like video games, not just apps like TikTok -- with NO OVERSIGHT AT ALL. Punishments for trying to get around these bans and censors can be up to a million dollars or UP TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON.

Seriously, read this bill, spread information to your circles, and HARASS YOUR REPS ABOUT THIS. Call them up and tell them if they support this bill you will actively campaign for their competition in the next election. If you don't like phone calls, email them. If you don't like typing emails then get ChatGPT to make one up for you and all you have to do is send it. This is TIME SENSITIVE. We need to make as much noise about this as possible ASAP. This bill is a direct attack on the first amendment and on FOIA, the Freedom of Information Act. This is SCARY.

This is a bipartisan issue that will affect all of us. It doesn't matter what political party you stand for, both Dems and Repubs are supporting this violation of our rights and censorship of the internet. Meta is hardcore lobbying for this bill and politicians on both sides are happily taking their bribes to fuck us over. Make noise about it, please.

i'm as tired of finding out crazy information from my distraction outlets as the next person, but this is important.

if you are in the us, please call your representative and tell them you oppose bill s686, the RESTRICT act (linked).

they introduced it and are trying to get it going without public knowledge. it completely infringes on our first amendment rights and goes hand and hand with what happened to net neutrality not long ago. i would recommend taking the time to read it as i have a hard time explaining things, but it basically throws our internet privacy further out the door and puts the government's hands directly into our internet pies. if they don't like something, sucks for us.

the ongoing attempt to ban tiktok probably started this, and if anyone can add a better explanation, please do.

I really want to say this even if some of y'all might hate on me lmao; but if you call yourself leftist or claim to be for equal rights but are advocating tiktok being banned under what are racist sinophobic and classic red scare talking points and fear tactics you should really examine yourself and your values. If you are actually scared of the fucking Chinese goverment, that I can bet the majority of people on tumblr don't even live in China including the people acting like this is good you're just racist and your reasoning is based in sinophobia.

So I decided to listen in on the congressional hearing for banning TikTok, like an idiot, and here's the thing Shou is not responsible for the social media that kids consume, THAT is on the parents. This is so stupid...

Also China has its hands in everything that we use. Now everyone in congress is losing their fucking mind? They keep talking about how data has been sold, how it's there, well if you have the evidence show it, stop stating it.

And if they think for one second that TikTok is bad and heavily influences children, what about Facebook? Instagram? Hell fucking Twitter, that place is awful. And last but not least here on Tumblr? If you're not fucking careful you can end up on the wrong side of it.

This isn't about our safety. It's about the fact that our government has no affiliation with TikTok and they can't control it.
