🌊Mermaid characteristics and habilities🌊
🌊Hey guys! This is a list I’ve made throughout my years of practice, adding and changing things as I grow up on it. It’s completely based on my experiences and research so feel free to add and comment about it! This will cover both incarnated mermaids, and spirit merfolk.🌊
💙Also, you can play a little game with me. Reblog and tick ✔️ the numbers that you have, or have heard about. I’d love to hear your experiences too!💙
🌊Physical qualities and personality🌊
1- Enhanced senses, hearing, taste, touch, smell, except sight.
2- As I said before, bad eyesight on land (99% of Mermaids I know wear glasses, no joke. Myself included), ussually some sort of weird condition that makes them have extremely well eyesight underwater, but awful bad eyesight on land. It’s rather funny that I know so many people like this.
3- Slow metabolism, if it’s Merfolk from outside the equator zone. Probably fat, or somehow genetically disposed to easily get fat. You know, the ocean is cold, we need that extra layer of lovely coziness.
4- Probably good singing in really high pitches, even if not so good at low ones. They’re good for communicating among long distances.
5- This is going to sound weird, but really thin hair. Probably not much hair either. It’s genetically connected to the ‘slow metabolism’ point. I’ve always thought this helps to be more hydrodynamic, who knows.
6- Really good at swimming, has a lot of fun swimming, or at least really interested in learning swimming techniques.
7- Extremely good with animals. Even those that are ussually difficult to take care of, or that are known for having “bad temper”, we can handle them.
8- Possibly has a fish friend, or some sort of water/amphibious creature, possibly has tried to somehow use them in their craft. Ussually as their companion or familiar.
9- Depending on the species, they can be either really extroverted, or really introverted (and somehow trying to open themselves sometimes). There seems to be no in between sometimes.
10- Again, this is going to sound weird, but we can take things too personal sometimes, or be highly emotional, probably because, well, water signs are strong on these ones.
11- And related to that last thing, merfolk have strong emotional intelligence.
12- Saltwater merfolk tend to like salty things? a lot? and most like really spicy things too.
🌊Magical habilities🌊
13- Empathy, present in all Merfolk.
14- Kind of telepathy? not exactly like in the movies, but can read other people’s thoughts, sometimes quite literally, and most of the time accidentally. Which ends up in some pretty akward situations. Mermaid witches often use this to maintain contact with the Ocean, their pod, or other beings with such hability.
15- Wind control. Most can easily control wind with their voice, whether by speaking, or singing. This is present in all Merfolk I’ve met this far. It’s called aerokynesis, ha, it sounds fancy, I know.
16- Weather magic. It’s… kind of a mix of a lot of stuff. Basically, we can sense water easily, and can control the winds, so if you are experienced enough, you can make a storm wait a few minutes so you can get out of your pool comfortably, oops, I mean bring storms, or drive them away. Try not to mess up the weather too much tho. Don’t be me, I was a foolish young mer.
17- Dreams. Sometimes prophetic dreams, sometimes just an answer to something you’re experiencing and can’t figure out, but most can easily read other people’s dreams, or receive messages through other people’s dreams too, not necessarily on their own only.
18- Extremely enhanced intuition. No joke, follow your gut, mer, It’s like the most useful gift you can have. And still, my spirit guardian hates that I ussually don’t listen to my intuition ‘cause, you know, sometimes it’s just weird things that I don’t belive can happen. Like “take your umbrella, It’s going to rain” and It’s perfectly sunny? but… in about one hour or less it starts raining and you’re like oops? yeah. That happens a lot.
19- Mesmerizing voices. If a mermaid speaks or sings out loud, everybody will just stand and watch, and listen. Don’t know exactly why, don’t know if it happens with all mer, but it is a thing. If you’re going to sing, be prepared for people staring at you weirdly and gasping.
Now all/most of the above are present in incarnated mers. Now let’s talk about spirit mers!
20- Pearlweeping/crystalweeping: It is said that east asian merfolk can cry out the finest pearls in the world. Specially those who mourn their lovers. The same way, mermaids in the Atlantic are known for crying crystals like beryl or Aquamarine, and that’s why those crystals are known for helping achieve a safe journey on water.
21- Shapeshifting: Some species can transform, but not all. For example, kelpies (and other types of the often called “water horses”) can shapeshift into mermaids, beautiful women, or other animals, like crows or wolves. Some mermaids can shapeshift back and forth from human form to mermaid form, like selkies, often using some sort of special item, like their skin.
22- Camouflage: Some species can change their appereance to fit their environment, and hide away from humans or predators, for example, cecaelias often have the same hiding skills octopi and squids have!
23- Hydrokinesis, or control over water. Although if whether or not incarnated mers can use this power is open to discussion, since I know of really advanced mermaid witches who can make waves or small whirpools (which can be connected to control the wind, and that’s why it’s open to debate), most if not all spirit mers can control water bodies, specially if they’re water personifications, like river spirits, or the Ocean.
24- Wish-fulfilling: Many species are thought how to use simple magic from a young age, and it is said that if you help a mermaid, they can grant you a wish. There are stories of mermaids having unique power objects, and if those are taken away from them, their life would be linked to that of their captor. If you save a mer from such life, they can grant happiness, and a prosperous long life!
25- Eternal youth: Again, east asian mermaids, particularly japanese merfolk, are known for being immortal kami. It is said that if you eat mermaid skin or flesh, you’ll be granted eternal youth too. Some legends say that you’ll become a mermaid, some other’s say you’ll just be an immortal human. Depends on the region, and probably of the species that reside there too.
26- “Drowning”: This special hability is present in all merfolk, and It’s unique to them. A mermaid can take other people’s energy from them purposely, think of it as concious empathy, but much stronger. It can range from feeling dizzy, to having serious headaches, and from really bad luck, to your whole life opportunities ruined. So be careful when dealing with merfolk, specially those well trained in magic.
💙Now… game time! Mine would be 2-6✔️, 10✔️, 12✔️ and 13-19✔️, 26✔️. I’d personally love to be able to have 21, 23 and 25 but lol not on this lifetime I guess~ What about yours?💙
💙With love, Nao💙

So are you telling poc pagans that they have to follow white people practices and that using animals in their practice is wrong? How fucking racist are you?
Eh, what? Where did I even mention race? At all? And why is it a “white people practice” to sustain from using animals? I think the population of India would like to have a word with you on that one.Anyway, let me explain in detail what I meant:Real animals or their remains are rarely needed, using a representation of said animal such as masks, figures, drawings/paintings, etc will usually suffice to invoke them.A lot of people also aren’t experienced enough to work with animals this way. And if you are, then my post didn’t apply to you.A lot of people are unaware of where their animal (products) came from, and if they were collected legally. Seahorses, starfish, corals, and even sponges, for example, are forcefully removed from their environment and it damages both their ecosystems and their numbers. If you are sure of their origin, as well as aware of their conservation status, then my post did not apply to you.(Also, removing wild animals from their homes should be avoided at all costs. Unless it urgently needs help, do not interfere, please. If you collect remains like shells, bones, feathers, animals found dead, etc. Make sure to thank the animal and be respectful. Also make sure you know how to clean them properly, as not to make yourselves or others sick.)I also don’t think it’s a “white practice” to want to help animals and their ecosystems through charities. And I find it rather disturbing that there would be people unwilling to help these organizations because they don’t like the volunteers’ skin colour. People all over the world have them, and the best ones are the charities that are local initiatives. (GoEco, the wild cat sanctuary in South Africa is a really good example of this.)My personal philosophy is that witches shouldn’t harm, but should protect and respect nature instead. And using or abusing animals for personal gain is the complete opposite to that. I’m not some kind of extreme vegan or anything, I just want all people and creatures to be treated with respect and care. And it’s very sad that you think that’s a quality only white people posses. Because I don’t. I strongly believe that race is in no way an indication of character.
Finaly, I’d like to tell you that you have a very hateful and negative attitude. And I hope that you learn to let go of that and learn to see other human beings as people, and not just as colours.I wish you harmony and peace. Have a blessed day.
