Just before the new year I began having dreams of animals. Each time when I woke, I knew they were somehow connected to this year’s ingress of Saturn into Pisces. I started sketching them hastily in the morning. Whiskery, slippery explorer; sleek fur all a-dream; gurgling but steady heartbeat; cool splash of life onto dusty, weary hooves. These are some of the phrases that come to mind when I return to these images. And my intuition tells me they all capture some aspect of this time we’re headed into. The Moon has many faces and phases…one of these is the Torchbearer, a sacred role in the Mysteries traditionally carried out by young unmarried women. The Orphic Hymn to Selene (aka the Moon) contains this line to evoke the role the Moon plays in the cosmos—leading human souls into and out of the earthly realm. Existing translations of the Hymns accurately portray the FIRST level of meaning in the poems, but miss the deeper esoteric content embedded in the Ancient Greek. In this time of alienation from the earth and sky, understanding this ancient wisdom more fully can provide us with a deep basis for a spirituality that acknowledges our interpenetration with other beings—including the other-than-human world.
