What I need non-indigenous DA fans to understand is that everything said about and done to the Dalish, both in-canon and by fans, has been said about and done to real indigenous groups and seeing that shit perpetuated in the fandom makes indigenous players feel really fucking unsafe.

“The Dalish refuse to let go of the past.”

“The Dalish need to get over it already.”

“The Dalish are just too attached to scraps.”

“The Dalish should be rebuilding instead of just grasping onto the things they have left.”

“The Dalish are too snobby/arrogant/isolated/etc.”

Entire clans being wiped out because humans blamed them for natural events or someone else’s crimes. Dalish people, especially children, being snatched from their clans and forced into residential schools Circles. Parts of Dalish culture being stolen and bastardized. Disconnected Natives City elves being forced into poverty and being routinely abused and mistreated by law enforcement and human citizens. Dalish characters frequently being depicted as rude and arrogant, with other elves (both in the game and in fanon works) being disdainful of the Dalish. Dalish characters explicitly rejecting their own culture, religion, and communities and insulting them. The Dalish being forced into abandoning their own religion and following Christianity Andrastianism. Records of Dalish culture, history, and the Elvhen language being destroyed, with the Dalish rebuilding them from the few scraps left.

These are all things that have been done to indigenous communities irl, and many of them are STILL happening to us. And many of the examples above are explicitly supported by not just fans, but the narrative itself, with players being set up to hate and hurt the Dalish at every turn.

I am begging for fans to stoop perpetuating this bullshit, to stop supporting such horrifically racist writing and tropes. Please just stop ignoring the very real impact that this shit has on indigenous players.

So, I’ve personally never seen any posts supporting or praising writers who have a clean, sparse style so this is one’s for them. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re a bad writer just because you don’t write flowery, extravagant prose full of metaphors and obscure words. Vocabulary and metaphors aren’t the only things that makes writing “good”. Rhythm, tone, clarity, word choice, and voice also makes writing good. And you know what? You can achieve that with minimal description and a complete lack of metaphors. Your writing, no matter how minimalist it is, is just as valid and just as good as pretty, flowery prose.

EYE   COLOUR  :      very dark grey, almost black

HAIR   STYLE   /   COLOUR  :     waist-length black hair that is often braided in two dutch plaits and then tied off into a low ponytail or a high bun. when worn out, arasulahn’s hair has a slight wave to it from braiding it so frequently.

HEIGHT  :      5′10″

CLOTHING   STYLE  :     simple, practical, and very dalish. long cotton or leather tunics with high slits on the sides, embroidered with traditional designs. cotton trousers, and hard leather boots. typically wears neutral colours.

          There were few nights in which Arasulahn was fortunate to enjoy her room to herself. The barracks were emptied of Inquisition scouts and soldiers who joined the celebrations at the Herald’s Rest after the Inquisitor’s latest victory in Halamshiral. She knew, in her heart, that she should be there as well, at the very least to congratulate the Inquisitor; but the journey had drained her spirits so much that leaving her very bed had become a momentous feat. There she laid, tired but sleepless in a blanket cocoon, until a familiar voice roused her from her fatigue.

          Breaths of white smoke came out in plumes through a slow and heavy sigh of relief. Arasulahn shut her eyes and leaned back against the wall, relishing the languid sensation of her racing thoughts slowing into a haze. 

          “Elgarn’an. I do not know if I can properly express how thankful I am for you right now, Roland,” Roland. Rooooland. His name sounded thick on her tongue, and strangely foreign, as if saying it for the first time. Arasulahn passed the slim wooden pipe back to her companion, who joined her beneath the rough canvas blanket, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder as they reveled in the quiet of the night. “I had begged the Creators for sleep, just a moment of rest for this weary mind, but look! You have answered my prayers in their stead.”
