It’s incredible how relevant the works (and warnings) of Octavia Butler are today. . From her less than idyllic childhood to her untimely death in 2006, Octavia was an observer who foresaw the danger of Western culture and where it was sending us. . She was a thinker, an internaliser, a self-enquirer. Her writings were a form of escape, her weary protagonists were fixated with the sustainability of the human condition. . “I wrote myself in”: Octavia was one of the first of her kind on the American literary scene. But Octavia wanted more than readership. She wanted change. Her writing almost demands us to ask those big questions: “will we survive our worst habits? Will we change? Do we want to?” It’s about time we answered. . I am always so grateful to see such beautiful celebrations throughout International Women’s week.
