Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by fear, dread, and other symptoms that are excessive for the circumstances. There are several types, such as generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and social anxiety disorder. Treatment is usually a combination of medication and psychotherapy (talk therapy).
If you have an anxiety disorder, you may react to certain things and situations with fear and dread. You may also experience physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a racing heart and sweating.
It is normal to experience some anxiety. You may feel anxious or nervous if you have to solve a problem at work, attend an interview, take a test, or make a critical decision. Some anxiety can even be beneficial because it helps us notice dangerous situations and focus our attention, allowing us to stay safe.
However, anxiety disorder is more than just occasional nervousness and fear. An anxiety disorder arises when:
•Anxiety disrupts your ability to function.
•Your reactions are frequently out of proportion to the situation (overreaction).
•You cannot control your reactions to situations.
Children, adolescents and adults can experience anxiety disorders. Women and people assigned female at birth are about twice as likely as men and people assigned male at birth to have one.
Anxiety disorders can make it difficult to get through the day. Fortunately, several effective treatments are available for these conditions.
