I am making Tuesday nights with my children a time to teach cooking. Tonight we made a variation on my mother's meat sauce. My first apple pie ever; a deviation from a recipient by Ina Garten. I learned how to make clarified butter today, for a curry stew from the Green's Cookbook I made for supper. It smells like carmelized nuts. I also used Winesap apples rather than Grannysmith. When I cook I think about my mother. She was one hell of a cook and hostess. The finish on her pies we always exquisite. This whole holiday season is going to be tough this year. Just about a year ago they discovered a mass of some sort in my mom's lungs. We were told that perhaps she had aspirated on some food. I now imagine that they were fairly certain before we went in that it was, as it turned out, cancer. I am sure they were trying to keep us calm. My mom and I could get along fabulously though we usually were at odds most of the time. I wish we had a better relationship than we did. We would go weeks without speaking, our lives firmly on their own paths. I think she would have enjoyed being with my kids now, they are so much more giving than they had been even a year ago. All the artwork of the past year has been a response to the experience, and I have been so busy I am not sure I am any closer to feeling settled with her passing. Streetart has always been a way for me to work things out. As banal as the statement "I MISS YOU MOM" is there was something transcendent about scrawling it on the sidewalk.
