Zombies vs. Unicorns by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier
Hey Book Nerds it is Mort here with another review.
This book is another anthology in the horror/fantasy genre. It is about unicorns and zombies, which is amazing all by itself. However the really cool thing about this book is that before every story, which they change between zombies and unicorns, the authors argue to prove that their team is better. It was really enjoyable to read their spats back and forth. this added something different to the book. I did wind up choosing a side, not the side i thought that I first started on but i will tell you what side got my final vote at the end of this review.
1. The Highest Justice-Garth Nix (unicorn)
3 bookmarks
This story was interesting but I thought that it could have been better. The unicorn in this story was an interesting character. my on problem was that this was more of a revenge story about a mother murdered and a daughter seeking revenge. Not really a unicorn story. I would have liked it more if the unicorn showed up more and had some type of personality. This story also contained a zombie so that was also a nice touch. It was still a good read.
2. Love Will Tear Us Apart-Alaya Dawn Johnson (zombie)
4.5 book marks
This story was very good. The only reason that I gave it 4.5 bookmarks was because of the ending. It reminded me of a twist on Frankenstein and it had romance. I am a big sucker for the ¨monster”finding love. My one problme was the ending. it took me from the top and dropped me down to the concrete. I did really enjoy the main character and how he reminded me of deadpool (my fave). Also an added bonus was that he wasn’t a typical zombie. Really refreshing
3. Purity Test-Naomi Novik (unicorn)
5 bookmarks
You know you are doing something right when you make people laugh so hard they drool. (not me someone else, hahaha) This story was a really good read and the unicorn was sassier than hades in the hercules movie. I really enjoyed how the two main characters played off of one another. The girl in the story is homeless and is just about done with everything. Both her and the unicorn make a good team and they have a hilarious adventure together. A really good read and one of my favorite from this anthology.
4. Bougainvillea- Carrie Ryan (zombie)
3 bookmarks
I really wanted to like this story. However, it really was a bit difficult to get into this story from the beginning. It did have a cool distopian world. The main character was hard to connect with and I found her bit annoying. granted she did become a bad ass halfway through and i found her tolerable. So with that being said can we just talk about the ending for a moment, WTF I always want things to take a turn for the better and instead i get a girl in serious need of therapy and no love.
5. A Thousand Flowers- Margo Lanagan (unicorn)
2.5 bookmarks
I thought that I would love this story because team unicorn was pulling out into the lead. This story was a bit odd from the beginning but i thought hey it will get better and then it just got freaking strange. It was like reading something along the lines of the Bastard Executioner or Game of Thrones just not as formal. As the story went on I was just lost and confused and then the ending happened (I´m beginning to sense a theme). The ending reveled a relationship that just blew my mind and kind of freaked me out. I wouldn’t really consider this a bad story just not my flavor.
6. The Children of The Revolution-Maureen Johnson (zombie)
4 bookmarks
This story was making fun of a certain actress which i thought was funny and pretty clever. The way that the author took these zombies and made them into something that I hadn’t seen or heard before was nice and a good change. It was creepy and kind of reminded me about The Family cult I had read about when i was younger (yes i read about cults in my childhood). I really enjoyed reading this and the ending was completely unexpected but in a good way.
7. The Care and Feeding of Your Baby Killer Unicorn-Diana Peterfreund
5 bookmarks
I really liked this story. It had magic and gore and just all around fun stuff. The unicorn was not your typical cute and fluffy, it was bad ass and cool.
I also liked the romance or should I say the romantic tension that happened in this story. It added something different and I liked how it was in the background and did focus on it throughout the whole story.
8. Innoculata-Scott Westerfeld
3.5 bookmarks
I enjoyed the ending of this story and it was well written. However, it was a bit long and it took awhile to really get into the story. There were touches of a homosexual romance which was a nice change of pace and one that I really enjoyed. The concept of the zombies was interesting and they were not the run of the mill zombies. The imagery that was thrown in at the end really did tie in the whole book.
9.Princess Prettypants- Meg Cabot
4.5 bookmarks
I really enjoyed this story. It was funny, horrifying and touching all at the same time. This story did take a while to get into it and it was full of cliches, but it tied together pretty well. The strong friendship and the underlying potential boyfriend added to the intensity of the story. The Unicorn was a bit of a disappointment. It was a bit too much mainstream. It didn´t have any factor that wet it a part from the stereotypical unicorns. Still a good read.
10. Cold Hands-Cassandra Clare
5 bookmarks.
I own a couple of Cassandra Clare´s books but never got around to reading them. After having read this book however i was pleasantly surprised and am now going to read some more of her work. This was a pleasant surprise and one that I definitely did not expect. This love/justice story was well written and a great take on a segregated town. I feel like this could also be talking about LGBTQA people. Anyone who doesn´t share the same views or walk the same path are not considered people. However, in this story they are dead so..........
11. The Third Virgin-Kathleen Duey
5 bookmarks
This story is definitely one of the best our of this book. The Unicorn in this story is such a creepy and sadistic character but they are also relatable. The fact that they can only talk to virgins is a nice element that bring is some folklore into the a modern story. The last virgin that he comes in contact with was a beautifully developed person and one of my favorites, not only for her bravery but also for not totally becoming a slave to this beast that wants her to do an unspeakable thing. I would love to hear more about this unicorn...........maybe a full book!
12. Prom Night-Libba Bray
2.5 book marks
The last story in this anthology was an ok one. I didnt hate this story, it just didnt do it for me. The story is about teenagers whose parents have all died and they decide to go prom. Not exactly what I would do during the zombie apocalypse but hey I never went to prom. The pain that the kids felt was real enough and how they held themselves together was admirable but I would have liked it if the story held more horror or something that would make me shiver but it was just a bit lacking for me.
Overall my rating for this book as a whole was about a 4.5, I will definitely be reading this again but it does have some stories that I might just skim over.
Happy reading everyone!

It’s been a while since we checked in on how the Renaissance is doing with its ocean mysteries, so here is a marine biology update circa 1550.
Seals come in two forms:
Buff

Walruses are horrifying

But whales are worse

Fish can have human faces

but not always where you’d expect

As for the rest

Hey guys, Mort here with another review.
This is the sequel to Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake. Here is the synapsis of the book:
Its been months since the ghost of Anna Korlov opened a door to Hell in her basement and disappeared into it, but ghost-hunter Cas Lowood cant move on. His friends remind him that Anna scarified herself so that Cas could live- not walk around half dead. He knows they're right, but in Cas's eyes no living girl he meets can compare to the dead girl he fell in love with. Now he is seeing Anna's ghost everywhere: sometimes when he is asleep and sometimes in waking nightmares. but something is very wrong...these aren't just daydreams. Anna seems tortured, torn apart in new and ever more gruesome ways every time she appears. Cas doesn't know what happened to Anna when she disappeared into Hell, but he knows she doesn't deserve whatever is happening to her now. Anna saved Cas more than once, and it's time for him to return the favor.
OK, this was not what I was expecting for the second book. Although I loved the first book and fell in love with the main characters, the second book I feel was missing something. The first book has become a favorite of mine and I waited a while to get the second (mainly because I was lazy and didn't feel like ordering it). Now I know that I didn't do a review on the first book but let me just just say that I loved it and it has become one of my favorite YA horror novels. Now as much as I liked the first book the second one kind of left me wanting more. I know that the ending was meant to be it and there hasn't been any talk about there being another book, however I want to know what happens when the dust settles and everyone goes back to their lives. Do they continue to hunt ghosts? What about the second hunter girl? Does she have anymore run ins with Cas? Do they fall in love? or what about the second book in Anna's point of view. Ugh, so many ideas, let us move on. I didn't really like the whole Cas is crazy vibe. I understand that he just witnessed the love of his life going to hell, it would keep me up at night too. I just feel as though being in his line of work he would be better able to handle things a little better and maybe seek help when you are seeing the love of you life in your bedroom being torn apart and contorted. I could just be an insensitive dill-hole. Now, I love Cas's best friend, Thomas, but like did we need his girlfriend Carmel to do him so dirty. I was pissed and thought "here we go another drama in the romance department", although it was well written and didn't take up most of the book. it still could have been less. Maybe instead of bringing that useless scene in Kendare could have added more action in. Cas is after all a ghost hunter and while there was hunting going on it lacked any of the former action that the first book had. I want the bang! and Pows! that were in the first book and the horror that made it so good. I don't regret reading this book and I still love Kendare Blake, I am just a little disappointed
I still would recommend this two book series and I give it an overall 4 out of ten bookmarks.
Happy reading

The Monsters Corner: Stories through in human eyes.
Hey guys Mort here with another book review. This is another anthology (incase you didnt realize that I loved them). This particular book is told in the point of view from the monsters. I thought this would be a good book to read as i am always reading about the hero and not how the monster feels. I thought that this would be a different book and switch up what I have currently been reading. Also i have included little descriptions about each story. So here we go.
1. The Awkward Age- David Liss
About a man who is trying to figure out his son and becomes ensnared wtith his only friend, a girl who claims to be a ghoul.
4.5 Bookmarks
The only reason this story got such a high rating was because of its ¨What the fuck is happening¨ storytelling. The author did lose me in the beginning but the unexpected twist at the end did make it worthwhile. I would have actually liked it if the story continued.
2. St. John- Jonathan Maberry
5 Bookmarks
A man who hears a voice in head that he believes is God and turns into a saint/hero that a crumbling world needs.
This story really freaked me the fuck out (excuse my language). I was wondering where this story was going, but was not prepared for the ride that it took me on. This story scared me and it really did stay with me after i read it. For a story to really bother me you know it is good. I am like a rock. My fiancee is the emotional Pisces :) (I love you)
3. Rue- Lauren Groff
2.5 Bookmarks
A woman with a body that is her prison, steals a child and tries to keep her innocent. until one day she cant anymore.
This story was a bit disappointing I did not it scary and the woman didn't seem like a monster as I believed she was going to turn into. She just seemed mentally ill and not in-tune with reality. This story was a bit boring and did not had my interest as much as the first two.
4. Succumb- John McIlveen
5 Bookmarks
A sex scene that takes a wild and odd turn.
This started off intense and very sexual (which come on is great), but holy hell if I haven´t heard of a better way to die. Really good read, I was not expecting a twist (at least i thought it was) that was thrown in.
5. Torn Stitches and Shattered Glass- Kevin J. Anderson
5 Bookmarks
A famous monster returns to save a town from Nazis and it do not end well for them....or him.
This story was a play on a classic story, but it was more sad than it was horrifying. The action was good and the description was there so it was a really good read. I really did enjoy this story and it made me feel things so you know that was good also.
6. Rattler and the Moth-man-Sharyn McCrumb
3.5 Bookmarks
Conversations with the Moth-man.
Not a bad story but it was a bit slow to start. It did have a nice spin to it and was a great play on an old legend and fear that people have. I didn't really like the description of the Moth-man though. It didn't really scare me, but neither did the rest of the story. Still a good read just felt like it should be in a different anthology........
Ok lets just scratch everything that I have said about this entire book (ok not everything) but can I just rant for a minute. this book literally make no sense. Half of the stories are boring and the some are just ok, about two of them actually managed to freak me out and one I would actually like to read more of. To be quite honest though I hate this book. Now I am not saying to not give it a go and read it but I am just warning you to the inconsistencies of the book and the over all flow sucks. out of the 18 stories in this book I will probably read one story a couple of times. I was surprised to find that this book went for pedophile father to rape city to plants in love to Jesus and Satan taking a walk together, I think my main problem was that even though the overall theme was just monsters I think it would have been a lot better to just stick with one kind. maybe the few could have been better that way. I cant tell you what could have been, only what I have read and I wasn't so impressed. One story might be good and the next could suck ass. Usually I only read books that I wind up loving, that's just me being lucky I suppose, but this book that I thought I would love and was a thoughtful present from a friend, ( @storyofair you should go and check her out she is awesome), I cant stand. but maybe this will prompt me to put my foot down and stop worrying about feelings and make some book rants. Who knows!
Read at our own risk! I overall give this book a 2. It was a disappointment but I am not going to stop you from reading it.
Happy reading guys

Everyday by David Levithan Review
5 bookmarks (should be 1 bookmark for making me cry and having an emotional roller coaster)
Holy shit this book was like nothing i have read before. First lets tell you what this book is about.
Synapses:
I wake up.
Immediately I have to figure out who I am. It´s not just the body-opening my eyes and discovering whether the skin on my arm is light or dark, whether my hair is long or short, whether I´m fat or thin, boy or girl, scarred or smooth. The body is the easiest thing to adjust to, if you´re used to waking up in a new on each morning. It´s the life, the context of the body, that can be hard to grasp. every day I am someone else. I am myself- but I am also someone else.
It has always been like this.
First let me say that this book is amazing and I highly recommend it. I was reading this book for a book club that I joined with my fiance (Eng) and two of our other friends. I was not prepared for the feelings that I would encounter with this. I cried like a baby and was anxious, but not from any person memories that this book brought up but for A. They are a beautiful character that has touched my life (at least in the literary sense) and I cant stop thinking about them. What would happen if they woke up for one week straight as the same person? or What if as they got older it became a year? so many thoughts have been going through my head about this book. Also, the loneliness that they felt and how one day blended into the next was really shocking and sad. However, it all changed when they met one person. I could really relate to this because that I how i felt when I met my fiance. How one person can change your entire life and they are all you want to surround yourself with that is pretty special.
I highly recommend this book to everyone and anyone.
Happy reading-Mort

Super Mutant Magic Academy-Jillian Tamaki
5 bookmarks
This book has got to be up there with my favorites. I was cute and funny and it also addressed issues without being so stuffed shirt about them. I enjoyed the fact that the characters were real and could be related to. My two favorite characters were Marsha and Wendy. They remind me so much of me and my fiance that it made me laugh when i read over the passages of the two of them. This book is a collection of the webcomics that Jillian Tamaki created. They are mostly made in black and white but she does add some color on some on some of the pages throughout the book. The color is a nice addition to the black and white. I also really liked that the characters all looked different and that their personalities showed through and you could build a connection to each one of them.
This is the synapses for the comic.
The Super Mutant Magic Academy is a prep school for mutants and witches, but their paranormal abilities take a backseat to everyday teen concerns. Science experiments go awry, bake sales are upstaged, and the new kid at school is a cat who will determine the course of human destiny. In one strip, lizard-headed Trixie frets about her nonexistent modeling career; in another, the immortal Everlasting Boy tries to escape this mortal coil to no avail. Throughout it all, closeted Marsha obsesses about her unrequited crush, the cat-eared Wendy. Whether the magic is mundane or miraculous, Tamaki's jokes are precise and devastating. SuperMutant Magic Academy has won two Ignatz Awards. This volume combines the most popular content from the webcomic with a selection of all-new, never-before-seen strips that conclude Tamaki's account of life at the academy.
Happy reading!!!!

The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service- Eiji Otsuka and Housui Yamazaki
5 Bookmarks
This book was about five young students at a Buddhist university find there´s a little call for their job skills in today´s Tokyo....among the living, that is! But their studies give them a direct line to the dead- who are still trapped in their corpses and can´t move onto their next reincarnation! Whether you died from a suicide, murder, sickness, or madness, they´ll carry your body anywhere it needs to go to free your soul! (this is on the back of the omnibus)
This Omnibus edition of this manga was amazing. It was really great and well written (or translated I should say). It was incredibly creepy at some points and then light and funny at others. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who likes a paranormal read as well as one that pushes into gore and horror. I have to say that my favorite character so far is Yata. He channels through a sock puppet that is a sock (and claims to be an alien). I feel that he is one of those characters that doesn´t have the stage all the time but you still love him when he does get the spotlight. I think he is awesome. I also really like Numata. He has the bad boy thing going for him, but he isn´t the typical bad boy. He has a soft side and it appears throughout the book and that gave him a special place in my heart.
Happy reading! Talk to you next time!

Wow. Let me just say WOW. I was not expecting this book to be this good. I picked it up at the local used book store knowing I would be finished with my other book before work was over and needed a new one.
This book is about Romeo and Juliet. Yeah that Romeo and Juliet. But it isn’t a love story about them, its the story of their death and subsequent immortalities as they join the sides of light and dark and become enemies fighting for/against true love. This book totally changes the real story behind Romeo and Juliet as they die and are brought into many other bodies of future people to try and save love (in Juliet’s case) or destroy it (in Romeo’s case). This book was fantastic despite the fact that its premise made me think the book might be terrible. I am so glad I picked it up today. I read the whole thing today. I’m gonna have to say this is being added to my top favorite books/series. There is a book that comes after this Romeo Redeemed too which I can’t wait to get and read as well. I would definitely recommend this to someone.
I would give this 10/10 bookmarks.
Here are some quotes I liked from this book:
“Dying is easy. It’s coming back that hurts like hell” (4).
“I wrinkle my nose, disappointment that he’s alive leaving a bad taste in my mouth. As an Ambassador of Light I’m supposed to be above such feelings. But I’m not, never have been-not when I was a living girl, and not as an immortal warrior for love. Love. Sometimes the thought of it leaves a bad taste in my mouth too” (9).
Go ahead and give this book a try! It’s totally worth it. :) Let me know what you think.
Happy Reading,

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
5 bookmarks
This book rapidly moved up the list of my favorite books. I really enjoyed this book and it made me want to immediately read the other books in the series. The book is about a girl named Celaena Sardothien she is an assassin and she finds herself imprisoned in the mines. She is offered a way out of the hell hole that they throw prisoners. The Kings son offers her a position as his choice in a tournament to decide the Kings champion who will work for him, then after sometime will be released to be free to do whatever that person wants. After things kick off some crazy crap starts happening and people start dying and it isn't because of the tournament. Something is moving about the castle killing off the selected potential champions. Celaena investigates and it turns out that there is more in within in the kingdom. Magic is alive somewhere even though it was banned and driven out years before.
while all of this is going on a girl might think ¨well my plate is full¨, but yet there is still romance and heartbreak and all that fun stuff. This does not take away from the kicking of ass and the overall action but it is so in the background that it does not take anything away from the rest of the story. The imagery that the author brings forth with her description of the land and the characters emotions is what really made this story for me. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves action, adventure and just all around girls who kick ass and still like shopping and cake.
Happy reading!

I finally finished the series and it was sooooo good! I absolutely love Cate Tiernan and am so happy I decided to read her books again after having read Sweep so many years ago. This book in particular was the best of the series. She tends to write better books as the series go on which is exactly what I want in a series. I really could not put this book down and am really sad that it ended. It seems like there should be another book after this one but that is the way her series end sometimes. Not everything is cleared up. I definitely would give this book 10/10 bookmarks and would recommend this series to anyone interested in witchcraft or even just books for teens. This series had relatively decent representation of different minorities and sexualities as well, so I was happy to see that.
If anyone else decides to read this series I would love to hear what you thought about it.
Happy Reading!

Review for Shatter Me by Thereh Mafi
5 out of 5 book marks
Hey guys Mort here with another book review.
This book was by far one of my favorite.
It reminded me a lot of X-Men with a dystopian twist. WARNING: Some spoilers may be present, skip to the last paragraph for the review. The main character a girl named Juliette is also the narrator. She has a lethal touch and has been thrown in an asylum because of her power with which she wound up committing a horrible accident with. She does become somewhat in sane because of the isolation that she suffers and also because she believes that she is a monster. Soon though she gets a cell mate named Adam Kent. He reminds her of someone but she doesn’t believe they are the same person. She helps him to understand the ways of the asylum. What she doesn’t know is that the Reestablishment a government group that has the world within its grasp, is after her. When they pull her put of the asylum she Kearns that they want to use her powers against prisoners. Warner, the leader of Sector 45, offers her way out of the asylum but what he is offering is the one thing she doesn’t want to do, touch people. He starts to fall in love with Juliette but she has begun a romantic relationship with Adam. Adam and Juliette wind up escaping Sector 45 and find refuge with a rebel group. This is when Juliette realises she is not alone when it comes to having powers she believed no one else did.
This book was well written. It was face paced so I didn’t feel like I was reading it forever. The authors use of description was beautiful and I didn’t have a hard time picturing the scenery or the characters. This book was also emotional as well. It made me mad, sad, happy, tearful and much more. This is when you know you have found a good book. When you can cry and laugh and not be overwhelmed but it still stays with you. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes dystopian worlds, people that have amazing abilities and action that will make you not want to stop reading, this is the book for you. Happy reading! Hey Everyone,
I just finished reading the third book of Cate Tiernan’s Balefire series A Feather of Stone. I absolutely loved this book. There was so much action in it and so many questions were answered (though of course more questions were added to be answered in the last book). I am rooting for someone I never thought I would especially after what they did in this book but they are one of the most interesting/most mysterious characters.
I can’t wait to read the next book. I give this one 10/10 bookmarks.
Happy reading,

Eng here,
An interruption to my usual postings. I read this children’s book over Christmas (my mom gave it to me for graduating) and I have to say, this is the cutest book I think I’ve ever read. It is increadibly illustrated and the story is so simple but really great. It was a fantastic way to talk about why you should never give up on your dreams and always try to do what you think is good even if others think your ideas are stupid. I would recommend this book to anyone who has children or just likes children’s books like I do. It’s a great book. :)
10 out of 5 bookmarks because I love this book so much.

So this is the second book of the Balefire series from Cate Tiernan. I recently reviewed the first one which I loved except for the chapter styling. This book continues the same styling (which by the time you finish the first seems fine and understandable). I saw the plot twist in this book before it happened though I’m not sure if it was because of foreshadowing or because I’ve read Cate Tiernan so many times that I understand the way she chooses to portray characters who will turn out to be bad or at least partly bad. I love this book as well, more than the first book of the series actually. I couldn’t put it down and read through it in about two days. I love that Tiernan’s books tend to be short so you can really feel like you’ve read the whole story but not have to wait 500 pages to find out what’s happening.
I’ve already started the next book, it took me a while to write this review finally. I will have the next review up soon and there are only two books after A Circle of Ashes. So keep a look out for my reviews of A Feather of Stone and A Necklace of Water.
Overall, I’d give this book 5/5 bookmarks. I would definitely recommend any of Cate Tiernan’s books.
Happy Reading!
