New Face
Wayne x fem!Reader
Letterkenny
Word Count: 1.76k
Contains: Drinking / mentions of drinking, American reader, female reader
---------------------
Moving from Wisconsin to Letterkenny was a big change for you. Your aunt and uncle moved there for work and you decided that getting out of the US would be a welcome change. Even though some of the politics wouldn’t be much different, at least you wouldn’t have to deal with the hack job conspiracy theories from the parents at work.
Of course the school at Letterkenny was desperate for new teachers, with some of the old ones waiting to retire until their position could be filled. As an art teacher, there wouldn’t be much to change in your lessons. There were still a few weeks until the school year started and you had just finished decorating your classroom. It was the end of a long, hot, summer day and you decided to treat yourself to a drink at the local bar, MoDean’s.
You walked into the small building immediately smelling the stale air of the bars you were used to in Wisconsin. At least some things are the same. You pulled out a worn down wooden stool, plopping down, relief easing your aching feet. “What can I get ‘cha hot stuff?” the woman behind the bar asked with a twang in her voice and a tilt in her head. You smiled, already somewhat used to the town’s quirky residents.
“I’m new to town,” you asked, “What do people usually get?”
“Lemme get ‘cha a puppers,” she stated turning to grab a beer and slamming it down in front of you.
You nodded and took a sip, feeling the cool liquid slide down your throat. “Good shit.” you commented.
Unbeknownst to you, you had grabbed the attention of two hockey players sitting at a table across the room.
“Yo Jonesy, a fuckin’ rocket just sat down,” a fluffy-haired Reilly elbowed his buddy.
“Oh yeah bro,” Jonesy replied, “total babe. You think one of us could get a takedown? Or both of us?”
“Sure as shit bro,” Reilly confirmed, “let’s wheel some snipes.”
You were making light conversation with the bartender you just learned was Gail. She was telling you who were good people and who were the skids and degens to stay away from, and even though you didn’t exactly know what a skid was, you took her advice. She seemed genuine and you had to take pointers from someone. You were talking about moving here and your job when you were interrupted by the bar stools on either side of you getting pulled out with a guy sitting on either side. You looked at the two guys in muscle tees, sighing internally. You didn’t particularly come to the bar to get hit on, just to wind down.
“Sup,” the blond one started. “Sup,” the other continued.
“Hello, boys,” you greeted blandly, sipping your drink.
“So what’s a guy like us,” blondie pointed to himself.
“Gotta do to get with a snipe like you?” the other pointed to you.
You gulped down the drink in your mouth, making a face. “A fuckin’ what?” you chuckled.
“You know, a rocket,”
“A ten,”
“A zinger,”
“Someone that makes you go ‘yew!’” they listed.
“A hottie,” Gail explained in words you’d understand.
You took a breath, processing the… compliments?
“Sorry boys,” you sighed, “you’re not really my type.”
The boys gasped, “What?”
“How so?”
“Well for one, you look like you could be my students,” you chuckled, causing the boys to exchange some looks, “And two, you’re a bit fuckin’ much.”
Gail laughed at your words that left the boys speechless.
“So how ‘bout you go find some other… rocket… that might be more your speed,” you got up from your seat and patted the blond’s shoulder before moving to a different seat down the bar, one next to a girl with long brown hair pulled into two ponytails on either side.
You plopped down again, setting down your beer, leaning onto your hand, letting out another sigh.
“Nice job fending those two off,” the girl next to you commented, “dealing with them can be a lot. I know from experience.”
“Thanks,” you chuckled, “hope I wasn’t too harsh. Don’t wanna go causing any bad blood just starting out here.”
“Thought you looked new to town. I’m Katie,” she stuck out her hand.
“Y/N,” you shook it, “ I moved here with some family, I’m gonna start teaching here in a couple weeks.”
“Good on you, god knows we need some new faces,” she rolled her eyes, “but at least now you know a couple people.”
You smiled and the conversation took off from there. She asked where you were from, you asked what she did. It felt easy talking to her, even if she was a bit younger than you. Gail was nice enough, but it was good to talk to someone a bit more… normal. She talked about how she ran a farm with her brother and how he was actually gonna meet her there soon so you’d have a chance to meet him. The door opened and Katie mumbled, “Speak of the devil, there he comes.”
You didn’t know what you were expecting from her brother but it certainly wasn’t the man walking towards the two of you. He had a lean, sturdy frame. His face was strong and a bit stern and he walked with a confidence that had your stomach full of butterflies, so much so you almost didn’t notice the two men trailing in behind him. While you may not have noticed the heat settling on your cheeks, Katie sure did. A sly smile broke across her face.
“Wayne, this is my new friend, Y/N,” Katie turned around in her stool to face her brother, leading you to do the same, “She moved her with family and is gonna start teaching here in a few weeks.”
The flush remained on your face as you smiled and nodded at him a bit shyly.
“Thank god, we needed a new face,” the man repeated Katie’s earlier sentiment.
“She did a good job of putting Jonesy and Reilly in their place earlier,” Gail piped up behind you, “Sent them with their tails between their legs.”
You chuckled, remembering the situation from earlier. “I just told the truth, wouldn’t call it sending them with their tails between their legs.”
Wayne gave an impressed nod and sat next to his sister, his two friends sitting on the other side. The burlier of his friends, Dan, continued the conversation with you, asking whereabouts you’re from, what brought you here, etc. The men were a bit taken aback when they heard you were from the US but with Katie vouching for you a bit they weren’t all that shaken.
Wayne had gotten up to go to the bathroom and Katie used the chance to scootch down a seat to talk to Darry about something. You continued to make casual conversation with Dan about random things here and there. When Wayne came back, he just stood behind Katie, arms folded. “You’re in my seat.” he stated.
“Move your feet, lose your seat big brother,” she smiled, “you’re free to take mine.”
“Mmm…” Wayne groaned before letting out a breath through his nose and sitting down in what used to be Katie’s seat.
Before you were able to continue your conversation with Dan, Katie had dragged him into the conversation she was having with Darry, turning her back to the two of you, somewhat excluding you from the conversation. With Gail on the other side of the bar, it was just you and Wayne sitting in somewhat awkward silence. You blushed again but decided to start a conversation with the handsome man next to you. But to your surprise, you didn’t have to.
“What brings you to Letterkenny?” Wayne asked, still facing forward.
“Well, my aunt and uncle moved here for a butchering job, and America isn’t getting better anytime soon,” you chuckled, “So I came with them. Figured I could find a teaching job here and if not I could work with ‘em.”
Wayne nodded, “Not afraid to get your hands dirty, huh?”
You shook your head, “Nah, I grew up in the country and as much as I didn’t like some of the… ideology there, I did like getting stuff done myself. Something about it was… satisfying.”
“Well, uh, if you ever miss that, I’m sure Katie and I wouldn’t mind you, uh, comin’ over and choring some time,” Wayne sniffed a bit, “if you’re up for it that is.”
You smiled and cocked your head a bit, “I might have to.”
The conversation flowed just as it did with Katie. The two of you talked about family and how you missed yours back in the US. You talked about your dog, a pittie mix named Hero, and how he loved running around your aunt and uncle’s property. He talked about his sister and his buddies, told stories about the town, some that sounded almost unbelievable, but when you remembered some of your earlier interactions you believed them.
It had gotten dark out and when you checked your phone it was about time for you to leave.
“Well, I should head out or my aunt is gonna send a search party for me.”
“Need me to call you a cab?” he asked gruffly.
“Nah, I’ve been nursing this beer since before you got here,” you nodded towards the beer besides you, “If I had any more I’d say yes.”
You left more than enough cash on the counter for Gail, tipping out of habit.
“Want me to wall you to your car then?” he suggested.
“Sure,” you smiled.
You waved goodbye to Katie, Darry, and Dan before walking out of the bar. The cool summer evening sent a chill down your spine, and it didn’t help that Wayne was standing so close. It was a short walk and once you had gotten to the car door you turned around to face the man once more. “Thanks for the walk to my car. Very gentlemanly of you.”
“Yeah, well, never know when a degen’s around,” he stated, glancing around a bit, “So, uh, could I, uh, get your number.” He still wasn’t looking you in the eye. Your face flushed and a smile split across your face.
“Yeah, yeah of course,” you stuttered a bit, “gimme your phone, I’ll put it in.”
He pulled out his phone and handed it to you, contact creator open. You typed in your number and texted yourself, handing the phone back to him.
“Feel free to text me if you need any help choring. If it’s the weekend that is.” you smiled and got into your car. You waved at the man and pulled out of the spot, driving home.
He looked down at the conversation on his phone, the name at the top reading “Y/N ;))”. He knew he was going to take you up on your offer.

I can't imagine my life without you (Alex Karev x gn!Reader)
Alex Karev x gn!Reader fluff
Kinda short, 812 words
Continuation of the last oneshot :)
--------------------------------
“Alex, c’mon, I’m trying to study here!” you giggled as the man wrapped his toned arms around your waist as you were typing away at your computer. You had been studying to get your doctorate in nursing, and this week was leading up to your oral defense of your dissertation. You had spent the past month memorizing your slides and preparing for any and all questions the committee might have. Of course, this left very little time for your boyfriend.
“Babyyyy,” he whined, “you deserve a break, you’ve been staring at that screen all day!”
“What you mean is,” you sighed, setting your laptop on the coffee table in front of you, “you want some attention.”
“Well, that would be a welcome result,” he grumbled, pulling you into his lap, “but seriously, you’re overworking yourself. You’ve barely slept all week.”
“I’m fine, Alex,” you smiled.
“Just take the rest of the day off, besides its not often that we both get the day off.”
You sighed and looked at the clock. It was almost 5, and there wasn’t much left to the day. You leaned onto your boyfriend and looked up at him.
“Dinner?” you suggested.
A smile crept onto his face at the fact that he was able to convince you. He gave you a quick, sweet kiss before standing the both of you up and running up the stairs. You laughed at how he often acted like a kid, but you were glad he was able to show you this side of him.
You guys were years into the relationship, and even though you two had your arguments, you had always come out stronger for it. You quickly ran up the stairs behind him, shouting, “Where are we going?”
“Joe’s!”
You shook your head as you ran.
You changed into a nice but casual outfit, quickly styling your hair. You felt the familiar arms wrap around your waist once more.
“Almost done?” Alex mumbled against your neck, kissing it.
“Yes, yes,” you smiled putting your hands on his.
The two of you left your apartment and drove the familiar path to Joe’s. The two of you took a seat at the bar, immediately ordering your drinks.
“Do you remember our first date?” Alex asked.
“Of course I do,” you smiled, leaning onto his shoulder, “I thought you were a brute but I went anyways.”
He lightly flicked your forehead and you laughed.
“I’m just kidding, but I seriously am glad I went,” you leaned your head onto your hand, looking up at the man you love, “I couldn’t imagine my life without you.”
Alex smiled down at you, giving you a quick peck on the cheek. “I couldn’t imagine my life without you either. You’ve taught me so much about myself, and you’ve helped me through so much.”
You took his hand and squeezed it, sitting up, “You’ve done the same for me. You’ve helped me build my self-esteem and self confidence. You encourage me to go as far as I can, but you also keep me in check, making sure that I don’t burn out. I didn’t know just how much I needed you until you came into my life. I love you more than anything.”
Alex let out a shaky breath. “I love you too, I just hope I’m able to show you just how much you mean to me,” he stood from his stool, “which is why…”
He got down on one knee, pulling a box from his pocket, “Y/N L/N, you make me feel like a better person, and I want to be a better person around you. You see things in me I haven’t seen, and I don’t want to spend a minute of my life without you in it. So what I’m asking is, will you marry me?” He opened the box to reveal the ring of your dreams.
You had stood up as soon as he got down on one knee. The man you loved knelt in front of you, asking you to spend the rest of your life with him. At that moment, any thoughts other than him left your body. Before he finished his speech you knew what you were going to say. Tears filled your eyes as you nodded your head, “Yes. Yes, of course!” You reached your hand out and Alex slid the ring on.
He leapt up, wrapping you in a hug, spinning you around, laughing. As he let you down from the hug he captured your lips with his, kissing you as if you were to disappear at a moment’s notice. You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer. The rest of the night, the other bar patrons bought you round after round of drinks to celebrate, and there was no studying or sleeping once the two of you got home.

you can do it with a broken heart
summary: jackson broke up with you for no reason, so now you try to survive residency while working at the same place. but you’re a real though bitch, you can handle your shit

“You seem… okay.”
You looked at Meredith who was staring at you with a concerned expression. You shrugged, spitting the toothpaste from your mouth into the sink.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” You asked, grabbing a towel and wiping your face from any minty residue.
Meredith narrowed her eyes on you. “Well,” she said, entering the bathroom fully. “Avery dumped you.”
Your heart sank at the mention of him. You shook your head, forcing a smile. “So? It’s not the end of the world. He’s literally just a guy and I dumped him.”
Alex entered the bathroom, pushing past you to get to the sink. You locked eyes in the mirror and he shook his head.
“Pretty boy was not just a guy,” he grumbled, grabbing his razor. “He was like your person or twin or whatever it was you called him.”
Meredith hummed in agreement, sitting on the toilet with her eyes fixed on you. “He wasn’t just a guy, he was your guy.”
You sighed, running a hand through your hair. Your stomach twisting like a wet rag at the topic of conversation. It had been two weeks since Jackson decided to end things after months and months of the stupid will they, won’t they dance. It wasn’t even a viable reason, he needed to focus on plastics and you needed to focus on cardio. It wasn’t you, it was him. After the boards things were going to be different.
Blah blah blah.
“I’m fine,” you said in a failed attempt to convince both of them and maybe even yourself.
Because you were the complete opposite of fine. You were completely ruined. They were right. Jackson wasn’t just a guy, he was the love of your life. Your best friend and one random fight escalated to the point where you turned back to strangers.
Derek popped his head in the bathroom, catching your eye with a sympathetic smile. “Hey,” he said softly. “You okay?”
“I’m fine!” you exclaimed, pushing past him to get to your room. “Perfectly, fine.”
——
“You gotta fake it, till you make it,” Arizona said as she masterfully dissected a burst appendix. “Break ups suck. The important thing is though that you win, you have higher ground.”
You had the faking part down, now making it? That’s a whole different story.
“I’m fine,” you repeated, your eyes on the cavity in front of you. That seemed to be your new phrase lately, it had variations but fine was becoming your old faithful.
For some reason, you decided to look up at the gallery. Your eyes meet green ones. So green yet so blue at the same time. Like a watercolor painting of a beach paradise. You swallowed the lump that blocked your throat. Knowing the intercom was turned on by the red light, you decided to prove it once and for all.
“I actually have a date,” you lied, your eyes darting back to Arizona’s hand as she finished sewing up the kid.
She looked up at the gallery with wide eyes before landing her eyes on you. “A date? With who?”
“Um…” you racked your brain trying to come up with a convincing answer, your eyes briefly meeting Jackson’s. “A lawyer…yeah.”
Arizona dropped the subject when the monitor started beeping wildly, the attention shifting towards the patient. You look up at the gallery again. He was gone.
You’re fine.
“He said he’d loved me all his life,” you sobbed one into your arm one night at Joe’s. Lexie rubbed your back sympathetically. “He lied.”
She sighed, passing you another napkin. “You are going to be just fine,” she said, taking your drink away. “No more tequila for you though.”
You shook your head, wiping the tears from your cheeks. “I’m fine,” you said, forcing a smile. “I can handle this, this is nothing.”
——
“It’s kind of ironic,” Alex said one day, watching you repair an aortic aneurysm in the gallery. “She wants to fix hearts for a living but can’t get her own shit together.”
Cristina mumbled an agreement, her eyes focused on the surgery. April shook her head, feeling sad for her friend.
Meredith shrugged. “She says she’s fine,” she said, taking a bite of her apple. “If that was me, I would’ve drowned myself in the bathtub by now.”
Cristina raised an eyebrow, turning back to look at her. “That was you and you did almost drowned.”
“She’s on the verge of a mental breakdown,” Lexie said, her eyes focused on a medical journal. “It’s a matter of time.”
“Avery is a dumbass,” Alex stated, earning a chorus of agreement from the rest of the residents.
All of them were blissfully unaware that Jackson was standing at the entrance of the library. His eyes focused on you as you performed your magic. The way you laughed as you bantered with Altman. His heart sank.
He really was a dumbass for letting you go.
__
You sat in the gallery with the rest of the group, your eyes focused on the surgery below. You mentally took notes. You hadn’t slept in days, food would not stay down no matter how much you tried.
The anxiety ate away at you constantly. The emptiness follows you everywhere you go. The hospital became your home as you dreaded going to bed alone.
Jackson entered the gallery, causing the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up. You still couldn’t be in the same room as him, no matter how cool you tried to play it. With a curt nod, you stood up.
As the tension mounted within you, a sudden wave of dizziness washed over, causing you to sway slightly in your place at the gallery. Cristina, noticing your unsteadiness, reached out a hand to steady you.
"Hey, you okay?" she asked, concern etched in her voice.
You forced a smile, nodding weakly. "Yeah, just a little tired," you replied, though the lie tasted bitter on your tongue.
Lexie glanced up, furrowing her brow at your demeanor. "Are you sure?" she remarked, her voice tinged with worry.
Before you could respond, Meredith interjected, concern evident in her eyes as she set her half-eaten apple aside. "Maybe you should take a break, get some fresh air," she suggested, her tone gentle yet firm.
“I just need to leave,” you whispered, hurrying out of the cramped room.
You’re fine.
“Hey.”
You looked up from your study notes. Jackson stood in front of you, shifting from one leg to the other. His hand gripping the strap of his backpack tightly.
Your heart was pounding. “Yeah?” You cautiously asked, closing your notebook.
“I just wanted to check in on you,” he admitted, taking a step closer. “You looked rough in the gallery earlier.”
Your heart skipped a beat at his words, a mixture of emotions swirling within you. Anger, hurt, longing—each fighting for dominance as you struggled to maintain your composure.
"I'm fine," you replied, the words coming out more sharply than you intended. "Just a rough day."
Jackson's expression softened, his eyes searching yours for a hint of the turmoil raging within. "You know you can talk to me, right?" he said softly, his voice filled with genuine concern. “I know you. I know you haven’t been eating or sleeping. Meredith told me you barely go home nowadays.”
A bitter laugh escaped your lips, surprising even yourself. "Talk?" you scoffed, the words dripping with sarcasm. "About what, exactly? How you broke my heart?"
His eyes widened, a pained expression crossing his features. "I never meant to hurt you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I thought I was doing what was best for both of us."
"Best for both of us?" you repeated, incredulous. "How is dumping me, without a single good explanation, the best for me?"
Tears welled up in your eyes, threatening to spill over. You blinked them back, refusing to let him see your pain. "You don't get to waltz back into my life and act like everything's okay," you said, your voice trembling with emotion. "I'm not your consolation prize, Jackson."
He reached out a hand, as if to touch you, but you flinched away, the pain of his betrayal still too fresh. "I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice breaking. "I never meant to hurt you. I just... I thought it would be easier this way."
"Easier for who?" you shot back, your anger simmering just below the surface. "Not for me, that's for sure."
With a heavy sigh, Jackson took a step back, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "Fine. I'll leave you alone," he said, his voice filled with resignation. "But just know that I'm here if you ever need me."
As he turned to walk away, you felt a pang of regret, a part of you longing for the comfort of his presence. But you pushed it aside, steeling yourself against the pain. You had survived his absence once; you could do it again.
You’re good. You can do it with a broken heart.

It’s you I want
(George O’Malley x gn!reader angst Alex Karev x gn!reader fluff)
Details: Nurse Y/N has fallen for Dr. O’Malley, but is overlooked time and again.
(Reader is described as shorter than Karev and O’Malley)
Word Count: 3.28k
You worked as a nurse at Seattle Grace for the past four years. You’ve seen your fair share of interns, some have stayed, some left, some are obnoxious and arrogant, and others are so passive that they get flushed out.
At first, this is what you thought would happen with George O’Malley. There were many times when you were at the nurses station, watching him get overshadowed by his fellow interns. You felt bad for him, and there was his whole puppy thing going on, so there were times when you would help him with his scut work, giving him pointers here and there.
After a while, you felt your feelings grow from pity, to friendship, to admiration. George was sweet, and caring. He would tell you about his family during downtimes, and you would talk about yours. You felt a connection with him that you haven’t felt in a while. But he also talked to you about Meredith. He would talk, and talk, and talk some more. He would gush about her beauty and her intelligence, how funny she was, every single quality was attractive to him. She was everything you weren’t. You knew nursing was in no way lower than being a doctor, but you felt somehow smaller than her.
But even with his feelings for Meredith you couldn’t put aside your own feelings for George. How he would bring you coffee in the mornings, buy you a little snack whenever you were having a rough day, hold you while you cried if you lost a patient. It was so hard to not fall for George O’Malley, and tried as you might you did.
You were venting to another nurse about your feelings for George.
“I just can’t get George out of my head,” you sighed, “he’s just so damn cute and so caring.”
“Y/N, honey, you have to tell him.” your friend responded.
“I can’t,” you shook your head, “not when he has eyes for someone else.”
A sweet voice butted in, “Who has eyes for someone else?”
You jumped and swiveled in your chair to see George standing there, leaning against the station. The other nurse took the opportunity to get back to her work. Your cheeks heated and eyes widened, “How much of that did you hear?”
“Not much, just the end part about having eyes for someone else.” George explained, “So who’s the lucky guy?”
You breathed a subtle sigh of relief to this, “Nobody, really, it doesn’t matter.” You tried to go about your work.
“C’mon, Y/N,” he groaned, “this is the first time you’ve expressed interest in someone!”
That he knew.
You could tell he wasn’t about to let this go. You looked around, hoping to get an idea of what to say.
Eventually your eyes land on Dr. Karev talking to Dr. Stevens.
“Karev.” You stated, hoping he believed it.
George widened his eyes and shook his head quickly at that. “Alex? Really? He doesn’t seem like your type.”
He’s not.
“I don’t know something about him,” you lied, “he’s just so dreamy.”
You internally vomited. Alex Karev was a manwhore and hellspawn. He’s slept with half of the nurses, and insulted the other half. He hadn’t done either in his short interactions with you, luckily, but that didn’t help your opinion of him.
George was silent for a few seconds, blinking a bit rapidly, before he smiled at you.
“How about I set you up on a date with him?” he suggested.
Now you were gonna vomit.
“Oh no,” you shook your head and your hands, “no need, besides I don’t think he’d go for someone like me?” Your chest tightened in dejection.
“Someone like you?” George asked in surprise, “Y/N, you’re amazing! I can’t imagine anyone would turn you down.”
You bit your lip, chest tightening even more. George didn’t realize how he was squeezing your heart, threatening to destroy it. You thought about it for a second before you closed your eyes.
“Fine,” you sighed.
“Alright!” he jeered, “Y/N, I know what it’s like not to be noticed. You deserve this, even if I don’t really understand your interest in him.”
You sighed once more before George gave you two thumbs up and backed away before rushing off.
Once he was out of sight you groaned and dropped your head into your hands.
You heard the swivel of a chair once more, “you’ve gotten yourself into a big mess here, Y/N.”
You turned your head to look to your friend again, “Who knows, maybe Alex will help me get my mind off George.”
Not letting your mind linger on the thought much longer, you went back to work checking in on patients and updating charts. Before long you forgot about George’s suggestion, focusing completely on your work.
The end of the day came and you were getting ready to punch out before a knock on the desk alerted you to the presence of someone in front of you. You looked up to see none other than Alex Karev. Your eyes widened and you saw George not too far behind him giving you two thumbs up.
“Y/N,” Alex smiled, “a little birdie told me you may have taken a bit of an interest in me.”
You gave him a thin smile back, blinking at his boldness.
“Did they? And what do you think of that?” you asked, hoping for rejection.
“I think,” he leaned in, “I should take you out to dinner.”
Your cheek flushed. You weren’t used to someone taking an interest in you, let alone be so forward with it.
“Um, yeah, sure.” you stammered, smiling shyly.
“Drinks tomorrow? Meet here at 8?” he suggested with a sly smile.
“Sure,” you agreed, “it’s a date.”
Alex smiled and knocked once more, walking away.
Your heart was beating faster than you thought it would. Unexpectedly so.
“Sooo…” George inquired, worried.
“We’re getting drinks tomorrow.” you smiled a bit wistfully.
“What?”
“What?”
“You’re going on a date?” George asked incredulously.
You recoiled a bit at that, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing just…” he trailed
“No, go on.” you insisted, getting a bit heated, “what do you mean?”
“You just don’t seem like his type.” he admitted.
You blinked at him a few times and licked your teeth.
“Am I undateable?” you urged, nodding your head.
“What?!” George almost shouted, “No, that’s not what I meant.”
“That’s what it sounded like.” you countered, “I’m not a nun. Men find me attractive.”
“That’s not what I’m saying, Y/N.”
“No, you’re just surprised that he would go on a date with me.” you stated roughly, “You know what George, I’m heading out.”
You clocked out, grabbing your bag and rushed away.
The drive home had you stewing, angry punk music playing over the radio. When you got home you slammed the apartment door closed, thinking of George’s reaction to your date with Alex. He was the one who suggested a date, why would he do that if he didn’t think it would happen? Where did he find the audacity to tell you that you weren’t Alex’s type? You had listened to him go on and on about Meredith, so why was he acting like this when something romantic was happening to you?
All of these thoughts ran through your head before another solidified within your mind. You were going to treat tomorrow like an actual date. Whether you were originally interested or not, you are now. You went to the bathroom to prepare for the next day, shaving, exfoliating, and a face mask. You went to bed determined to make the date successful.
The morning came and you had a shift right before the date. You wore your scrubs but packed your best outfit for after, making sure that it wouldn’t get too wrinkled.
You went about your day as you would usually, except for avoiding George here and there. Any time that you would see him approaching you shot him a look that led him away. You were still pissed off and didn’t want to see him.
The day came to an end and you changed into your outfit. It fit you in all the right places, putting your best features on display. You looked into the mirror, fixed a few pieces of hair and sighed. You were actually anxious, and not in a I-don’t-wanna-go way but in a I-want-this-to-go-well way. Thinking about it throughout the day you realized that Alex Karev was attractive, and even though you had heard bad things about him, he hadn’t done anything to you. You were starting to get a bit giddy.
You walked out to the nurses station and saw Alex waiting for you in a nice pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a flannel. When he looked up to see you, a small smile spread across his face. He took a few steps to meet you where you were, a small gesture but one you noticed.
“You look,” Alex breathed, “good.”
You blushed and smiled under his gaze, “you do too.”
Alex scratched the back of his neck and let out a small chuckle.
“Joe’s?” you suggested.
“Yeah.” he smiled, “let’s go.”
You both walked in comfortable silence, shoulders bumping now and then.
When you got to the bar it was a bit crowded but not too loud. You scanned the bar for seats and locked eyes with George, who was sitting with Meredith and Christina. You quickly looked away and found a booth in the corner, away from the crowd.
You tugged on Alex’s sleeve and nodded towards the booth. He nodded back before taking your hand and leading you through the crowd of people. The action was shocking to you, and made your heart race. Once you got there, Alex sat you down and asked what you wanted. You gave him the drink, he nodded before going to the bar to order.
You sat there and stared at the table, feeling your cheeks with the back of your hand, surprised to feel them flushed. You smiled to yourself, surprised. So far Alex was nothing if not a gentleman and you were a bit happy you decided to go on the date.
After a beat you could feel holes being bored into your skull, you turned your head to see the trio from earlier staring at you. Meredith was staring with amusement, Christina with curiosity, and George with an expression you couldn’t read. They all looked away quickly, Christina and Meredith giggling a bit and George silent. You shook your head, not letting them get to you, and Alex returned with your drinks and a basket of peanuts.
You thanked him as he set your drink in front of you and took a small sip. He nodded and smiled in response. You decided that if this date was going to be successful you had to be bold.
“So, Alex,” you started, “why ask me on a date?”
He looked at you curiously, a mischievous smile playing on his face.
“Well, one, you were interested,” he counted off, to which you rolled your eyes, “and two you’re… admirable.”
You blinked back at him, smile splitting across your face, “Admirable?”
“Yeah, I don’t know,” he shakes his head, “your presence is commanding. You have the respect of the doctors, of your peers, hell you have my respect. You advocate for your patients and you actually care for each and every one of them. You’re admirable.”
You sat there a bit stunned. Alex admired you. He respected you. He saw you. He saw you. For the first time in a long time you felt appreciated and proud.
“Now you,” he insisted, “why me? I mean I do have a reputation.”
You didn’t think he would ask you that, which was a bit stupid considering you just asked him. You thought for a second. Why were you excited earlier? Why not turn down the date? Thinking back on your interactions with Alex Karev, you had an answer.
“One,” you numbered, mirroring him, “you’re pretty easy on the eyes.” He chuckled at your admission.
“And two, you work hard. Harder than most. Sure you walk around all cocky but I can see that you don’t just want to be a doctor, but a good doctor.”
He looked away smiling, scratching his neck again, a nervous habit you noted.
As the night went on, the conversation flowed rather freely. You both talked about interesting cases, hobbies outside of work, traded funny stories. You didn’t expect it but the two of you clicked rather easily. He wasn’t afraid to express his attraction to you and you liked the attention. He made you laugh. Really laugh, even if it was teasingly at your expense. You ribbed him just as hard, to which he would laugh. You couldn’t tell if it was the alcohol or the attention or just Alex, but you were genuinely enjoying yourself.
It was getting late and as you were just getting off your shift it was time to go home. You and Karev walked out the bar together, arms touching, practically holding hands. He hailed you a cab and opened the door for you.
“Thank you for tonight,” you started, “it was… really great.” You smiled up at him, cheeks flushed.
“I had a good time too,” Alex admitted, “I would, uh, like to do it again sometime.”
“Me too,” you agreed.
You bit your lip a bit sheepishly before leaning forward and planting a kiss on his cheek. He looked a bit shocked but smiled.
“See you later, Alex,” you waved goodbye, closing the door and giving the driver your address.
You closed the door to your apartment and leaned against it, covering your mouth and smiling a bit. Being around Alex seemed… easy. He was more caring and thoughtful than he looked. It wasn’t hard to like him. The conversation never got boring. As all of these thoughts ran through your mind, you realized something. You hadn’t thought of George almost the entire night. Maybe, you didn’t need to.
You took a shower, letting the hot water run over you. All you could think about was Alex and when you’d see him next. You had the next day off, but you would see him when you worked next. The idea of it planted a smile on your face and butterflies in your stomach. That night you went to sleep content.
The next few weeks had you floating. You and George were talking again after he apologized but that’s not why. Alex Karev was the reason. He would come visit you at the nurses station, flirting and joking. On the occasion that you had lunch at the same time, you would eat together, sharing your food at times. You went on a second date and then a third. After the third, you felt bad about how everything started. About not being honest with Alex. After work one day, you pulled Alex aside into an on-call room.
Your heart was going to beat out of your chest. What if this hurt him? What if he thought you were pathetic? What if he wanted to break things off?
“Y/N? What’s wrong?” Alex asked, “are you okay?”
The concern in his voice made you feel even worse, you were pacing a bit.
“I have to tell you something,” you sighed, “I haven’t been completely honest with you. And it’s eating me up.”
“What is it?” Alex placed a hand on your shoulder.
You looked into his eyes and frowned before looking down.
“So our first date,” you started, “you know how George told you I was interested in you? I wasn’t. I had feelings for George and he walked up on me talking about it and asked who I was talking about and I said you and I didn’t expect him to set us up. But I really did want to go on that date with you and I really did enjoy it, and it’s not just me getting over him I really really like you, and I felt so bad not being honest.”
“Y/N-“ he interrupted.
“Please don’t hate me.” you pleaded.
“Y/N!” He put both of his hands on your shoulders, “I know.”
“What?” you breathed.
“I know you had feelings for George,” he confessed, “I could see the way you looked at him. I was surprised when he said you had feelings for me. I figured I’d ask you out, you’d say no, and that was that. But you said yes, and I had the best time. And then we went on a second date and suddenly, you didn’t look at George the way you used to. I don’t care if you had feelings for George, as long as I’m the one you want now.”
You smiled up at him wistfully, bringing his face down to yours for a kiss.
You had kissed before, but they were just a few quick pecks at the end of the date. This was something more, it was soft and deep. Passionate but not lustful. It was everything you could have ever hoped it would be. The two of you broke away and you looked up at him, arms around his neck, “Alex Karev, you are the one I want.” He smiled before leaning down and kissing you again.
That day was the day your relationship with Alex truly started. He introduced you officially to the rest of the interns, aside from George, who you already knew. You’d sit with the five of them during lunch from time to time. There were times when you would catch George looking at you weird or rolling his eyes at you and Alex.
All of this came to a head one day when George caught you as you were about to leave. You were going to have a movie night with Alex, the two of you holding hands about to walk out the door.
“Y/N,” George called as he jogged up to you, “I need to talk to you.”
You looked to Alex and told him to go ahead, giving him a kiss on the cheek before approaching George.
“What’s up George?” you asked.
He pulled you aside into a on-call room for a bit of privacy. He looked around and took a heavy sigh.
“Break up with Karev.” he stated, as if he were mentioning the weather.
“I’m sorry, what?” you almost shouted.
“Look, Alex isn’t right for you,” he explained, “I didn’t realize it before but.. Y/N I want you. I need you.”
You stood there, staring at the man in front of you, trying to find any hint of a joke in his expression. When you couldn’t find any you felt a wave of anger wash over you.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” you actually shouted this time, “you need me? I fucking pine after you for months, listening to you gush about Meredith, and now that I’m happy with Alex you fucking NEED me. No. No, I can’t, George. You are far too late. Alex actually sees me. He’s direct and makes me feel secure. He’s loving and caring and funny and I can’t go through what you put me through again. I can’t.”
You turned around and left the room, slamming the door behind you. You sped out the door and into the parking lot, seeing Alex waiting for you by his car. You walked up and wrapped your arms around him, pulling him close.
“What was that about?” he asked.
“I’ll tell you when we’re home, you’ll thank me later.” you smiled up, kissing him.
