Shout out to Yuri!!! On Ice this pride for being the first show that actually made me realize televised characters can be explicitly gay on purpose.

Before that point I was already in fandom. I had already read books (such as the Heroes of Olympus series) with queer characters. I was into Supernatural and Marvel and Sherlock and I shipped gay ships.

This was still the first time I experienced actually queer characters. Characters who were central to the plot without the entire plot revolving simply around their queerness in an awful, pandering facsimile of life. Characters in a TV show, which felt so much bigger than even the most popular of books.

Characters who were—crucially—intended to be understood as queer.

Before that point I largely had subtext and queer coding and outright queer baiting and not much else. I was a young teenager and I was barely aware of my own queerness. It took me a solid rewatch of YOI before I could conceptualize that Viktor and Yuuri were actually romantically involved and the entire audience was supposed to know that.

I genuinely believe the writers/animators/etc. were aware of the queerness and laying out giant hints for those perceptive enough to pick up on and enjoy. I had literally been so starved for queer representation throughout my life that I couldn’t comprehend representation without the lens of heavy censorship! And this was 2015!

Around the same time I had a similar experience with a YA book that had a very casually bisexual main character who had a love triangle with both a boy and a girl. The fact that it wasn’t “a book about a bisexual girl” it was a sci-fi lowkey horror mystery book? It was like a revelation. Before these two experiences I hadn’t known that was possible for a queer character to exist beyond their sexuality.

Shout out to YOI, it had so many cultural impacts beyond just the personal experience I had with it. Shout out to all queer media everywhere. I love it and I love those who create it. Shout out to queer people everywhere who have been starved for faces and bodies and minds like theirs.

Dungeon Meshi Season 1 is like

Episode 1-11: Better hurry to get to the Red Dragon in time to save Falin! We have a whole month, though, so don't forget to stop and eat all sorts of monsters! I wonder how long it would take to taste test EVERY monster in the dungeon...

Episode 12-13: Carving into the belly of the beast, visceral and awful and bloody, searching through the stomach and intestines until finally finding a jumbled mess of bones. Desperate to do anything you can to bring Falin back, even if it violates ethics and laws, even if she told her brother that it was okay and time for him to let go. Falin coming back wrong, somehow indefinably because it's still her but something isn't right and it's your fault for causing it.

Episode 14-22: It's kind of awful but mostly awkward that we fucked up with Falin. We got to figure out a way to stop her now and the politics in the dungeon is getting kinda crazy. Anyways, who wants some monster meat? Also we adopted a cat-human-teenage girl.

Episode 23: One of your party members was trapped in this very dungeon as a teenager, watching as one by one the adults were picked up off until he was alone. He's terrified that they (including himself) resorted to cannibalism without his knowledge, the possibility which has haunted him ever since. It forces a perspective on his character that changes the meaning of every single action he's committed so far--each action being driven by this deep pit of trauma he's been quietly carrying without your party realizing.

Episode 24: Haha what if all the characters swapped species/race for the day wouldn't that be funny?

This man made of steel and plastic and flesh festering with rage stood before him. He wanted his death and he had already killed so many. This man….he remembered him when he was smaller. When he was nine years old and crept into his room and curled up to sleep on his floor, a floor that was cold to a boy who was used to far warmer climes, waking him up with his chattering teeth. And he had caved and brought the boy up onto his bed and the sense-memory of that small body laying in his arms with his cheek pressed up against his breastbone is seared into his soul. Just as the man he became, screaming vitriol as he burned, is seared just as vividly beside it.

The absolute most crucial thing about Coriolanus Snow and Sejanus Plinth…Coriolanus is indecisive as FUCK for 95% of the book.

If Sejanus grabbed his face and kissed him full on the mouth at any point I’m fairly certain that Coriolanus would be like, “Okay, okay, that happened. How can I spin this in a way that benefits me?” before fully processing if he was into it or not. If he thought he could get Mr. Plinth’s money through this method while still saving public face at one of his more vulnerable points…

The plot could be VERY different if Sejanus had juuuuust the right timing.
