All was quiet on the Razor Crest.

It was day four of a week-long hyperspace journey, but Din Djarin was no stranger to those. He had spent countless hours staring at the swirling blue vortex outside the forward viewport. The difference this trip was that the coordinates programmed into the navicomputer weren’t taking him to a bounty. If his contact was right, Gor Koresh would be able to direct him to other Mandalorians, and his hope was that they in turn could help him to return the child to his people.

The child in question was currently asleep. It hadn’t been easy to get him there; four days of being confined to the ship meant the little guy was not tired in the slightest, and he'd recently begun showing a rebellious streak. Din tried to see it as a sign that the kid was growing comfortable enough to test the boundaries of their relationship, but phrasing it like that didn’t make naptime any easier. Every time Din put him down and turned away, the kid would climb out of his repulsorlift cradle and scamper off to a distant corner of the ship.

As with any time he struggled with his new duties as caretaker, Din turned to his memories of the foundlings in the covert. He could still recall the most popular stories that were requested at bedtime, but unfortunately those alone weren’t quite enough to keep the kid interested. He was supplementing them with the only other written material he had on the Crest; various holo-manuals on weaponry and engineering. He himself sometimes struggled to stay awake while reading those.

He’d almost dropped his datapad while reading the latest one. He’d got halfway through a manual on ship maintenance and had stopped taking in the meaning behind the words he was saying. When the child’s eyes had finally slid closed it had taken a remarkable amount of effort to return to the cockpit instead of just lying down next to him. He wondered if the kid was taking any of it in; one day he might even be able to help Din with repairs–

He was jolted suddenly from his thoughts as the whole ship shuddered.

Several alarms started beeping and flashing at once. Din was immediately alert. He checked the scanners and pulled up the live diagnostic feed of the key systems, and saw at once what the problem was: one of the hyperdrive’s subsystems had failed. The stabiliser. The sublight engines were compensating for now, but it wouldn’t last long–

The calm blue vortex outside was shattered, pierced by shards of red light. With a deep grinding noise, the Crest dropped out of hyperspace completely.

All engine systems were down, and the cockpit was eerily quiet. There was only black nothingness outside the viewport.

an excerpt from chaos engineering, the short story I wrote for the @clanoftwozine !

He backed out of the sleeping compartment and switched his helmet vision to infra-red. Thanks to the coolant leak, the inside of the ship was mostly shades of blue. The small red figure in the vents above his head stood out sharply. He pressed a button on his vambrace as he took a step forward and the vent’s lock disengaged, the hatch swinging downwards. He extended his arms in preparation to catch, but it was as if the child had anticipated the hatch opening. He rolled further into the vent just as it opened, cooing in delight at this new game.
