Chatting with the orchestra before our session about the cues we are recording, the emotions we are going for and what the story of the movie is about. For the first cue, I quoted @alan.silvestri_music saying “it’s a birth and a death”. And for the second cue, I quoted my own annoying self and said “I want this to be as irritating, uncomfortable and annoying as possible”. They nailed both cues! And @peter.golub who conducted the orchestra and @tonymoralesmusic who was in the booth with us producing the score gave us a lot of insights and beautiful ideas too. Can’t wait to share the music with you all. And a special HOLLER to my friend and director @nicriegel. I miss you!! She was awarded the prestigious BMI Foundation Pete Carpenter Fellowship in 2017 for her piece Fly and Flow that was recorded by a 70-piece orchestra in Budapest. She also counts among her honors the Global Music Awards Silver Medal for outstanding achievement in film and TV scoring, and is a jury member of Le Petit Cannes Film Festival 2018. BTS before our orchestral session at the Sundance Lab was complete chaos between a team member getting sick and everyone else jumping in to help the others before session time. It was absolute madness. And there was a lot of love and bonding going on despite the stress. And we all, fellows, made it. And made it beautifully. And it was time for that red light to go on, and the musicians started to play, and NOTHING mattered anymore but the joy of making music and hearing those musicians bring the music to life. Every time I record with live musicians and the orchestra feels like the first time to me. I’ll never get over that sense of wonder, or the joy of seeing my name on a massive sheet saying: Composed By: Ghiya Rushidat. Or hearing my music transform from digital sounds inside a dark room to a big hall full of passionate, insanely talented musicians telling stories along with us. Just baked peanut butter cookies!! Here’s the super easy recipe (I use honey instead of sugar): 1 egg, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 cup of peanut butter, 3/4 cup of honey, 1 tsp water. Mix all and bake at 350 F for 15 minutes!! I just figured what my next tattoo will be. The number “86,400”.. Still deciding where it should go, maybe on my arm where I temporarily scribbled with a marker to see how it’d look like, maybe the number will be in Arabic, still deciding.. Today I came to a sad realization that we own 86,400 seconds for 24 hours, then it’s gone. That’s a lot of seconds!! How much time are we spending worrying about the future? What others think of us? How much time do we spend marinating in past memories? Binge-watching pointless series? Or just staring into space remembering that thing that person said that day hundreds of days ago! How do I want to spend those coming 86,400 seconds? And the next 86,400 seconds? And the next? And the next? Who do I want to my time with? What’s my ultimate goal(s)? How will I get there? How can I become happy, and from there, help others become happy too? Just a storm of thoughts invading my brain!
