meet clara, my new spring awakening oc :)

THE BASICS

Name: Clara Ewen Engel

Age: 14 at the start of the plot of Spring Awakening

Place of birth: Germany; she’s lived in the same place her whole life.

Current location: Germany, though she wishes she lived somewhere else.

Education: She attends school with the others, but she is not incredibly intelligent, and she is very sheltered.

Occupation: Student.

BACKSTORY

Clara grew up as an incredibly sheltered only child. Her father died when she was an infant, and when her mother realized she was a widow and could not have any more children, she decided to cherish and preserve every moment of Clara’s youth. In her brokenness, she never spoke about Clara’s father, which, in turn, caused Clara to grow up believing that she never had a father and that her mother conceived Clara on her own. Her friends have already deduced that her father had passed early on, and they choose not to talk about it for Clara’s sake, not wanting to upset her.

She turned 14 just before the inciting incident of the canon plot. Seeing Anna and Martha in a relationship, and although she knows that society thinks it is ‘wrong’ for them to be together, and she knows that Anna and Martha must hide their relationship for their own safety, she assumes it is simply because they are young and people of their age are not supposed to have relationships. 

Her biggest goal for the future is to have a family and children of her own. She has never been taught about procreation, and the other girls have intentionally sheltered her from society’s negative view on gay and lesbian relationships. She is not ashamed to speak out amongst her friend group about her desires to marry a woman and have a child with her, and though she does not understand, she listens to the other girls when they insist that she keep quiet about that desire. They know that, if Clara found out having a child with another woman was not possible, they would not only have to explain reproduction in its entirety to her (something which her mother failed to do), but they would also have to explain that she did have a father, but she never got to meet him because he died before she could remember anything about him.

i’m doing them all bc i’m impulsive and have a lot of ocs i’ve never posted/talked about bc they’re from different verses

1. omg how can i pick a favorite???!?! i’ll go with the one i’m really feeling like talking about today, her name is kari! (a) she’s really scared of commitment (b) her dad committed suicide and her mom is a heavy drinker to cope (c) she lives in a trailer park with her mom but she’s tryna run away (also: she’s from 1973!)

2. okay, so kari is loosely based on ilse from spring awakening (she is also lisa’s namesake, but ilsa is not heavily inspired by ilse). jo was named after jo march from little women but isn’t really based on her at all.

3. kari and julia’s plot (my first original play!!): kari hides out in a treehouse as she gets ready to run away. julia finds her and begs her to stay. kari wants to stay but she is too afraid; she runs off to join a hippie commune anyway.

4. lol nah, i don’t really fuck with nonhuman characters

5. my characters are pretty much all from america, but jo has some puerto rican descent and ryn is african american. some of them can speak american sign language :)

6. most of my characters (ilsa, jo, darby, leila, ryn (?) ) are all from the same verse- they go to masarotto high school in houston texas and have their little interactions :)

7. which is most talented?? that’s hard because honestly they’re all so different. kari is a really amazing artist, jo is very articulate, darby is a kickass drummer... etc etc i love them all

8. most common physical characteristic: probably either curly hair or gender (female). i also have two deaf characters so...? most common personality trait: ummm if sexuality counts i have a diverse crop of orientations

9. i don’t think any of them are like ADDICTED but some of them enjoy drinking/etc (update: SCRATCH THAT, kari got hooked on heroin when she ran away and joined the hippies)

11. two of my ocs have powers! corrie can time travel: she falls asleep and can wake up at pretty much any random time. sad thing is she can’t control it :( she’s also a victorian era gal so she’s So Confused when she ends up in 2019. also, maggie (004), my stranger things OC, has psychic navigation which basically means she has a pre-programmed mental GPS

12. ugh my fave relationship between my ocs HAS to be kari and julia. they’re absolutely brilliant together. they love each other so much and it breaks my heart to see kari go because their friendship is so powerful. kari just struggles choking back her feelings for julia and julia knows about them, but she’s not scared of it (though she doesn’t reciprocate).

13. uHhH crackships between my ocs?? i mean kari and julia could never work as romantic partners but i’m kinda down for it if both of them did some self evaluation

17. yes in fact! mental illnesses/neurodivergencies: ilsa and jo are both deaf. ilsa also has SBS (shaken baby syndrome) and as a result is partially blind in her right eye and has some social and learning disabilities. kari has depression but she’s coping!

18. fave thing/s to research: im such an old soul so i love researching different time periods. i especially love researching for corrie (my 1850s girl) because i love the victorian era. like i lowkey believe in reincarnation, and if it’s real, i’m almost certain i was alive in that era.

OC Questions - Random (Leila)

How do they sneeze? an awkward little mousey sneeze (but not squeaky. just mousey in the sense that it’s quiet and she tenses up really weirdly to sneeze) What do they do when they are nervous? the Leg Bounce(tm). she also fidgets with her shirt sometimes, depending on what the situation is. for like, performance anxiety, she does vocal trills and shakes her hands and legs (especially backstage) but when she can’t do that, she handles her nerves a lot more discreetly. Are they superstitious? not really when it comes to life, but hell yeah when it comes to theatre. she screamed when someone said ‘macbeth’ backstage once. Do they believe in luck? not luck; she thinks everything is sort of a collaboration between you and god, and that it would be wrong to attribute any of it to luck Have they ever had ice cream before? definitely. she’s a strawberry ice cream gal. she’s tried to be vegan before, but she learned pretty quickly that going cold turkey and cutting out meat, dairy, eggs and honey all at once is not a wise way to adopt a new diet. Do they know how to cook? if ‘cook’ means macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, pasta, microwave meals and instant ramen, yes. absolutely. she’s no chef, but she can bake a pretty mean batch of blueberry muffins. her strawberries & cream cake is also pretty amazing.

Do they believe in killing others? ’killing others’ is a strong term. she’s pro-death row for a crime that caused the death of another innocent person. she’s pro-life when it’s possible, but she won’t condemn someone who needs an abortion to save their life or if the child was brought on by rape (she just thinks that when it’s an option, the pregnancy should be carried to term). she’s definitely pro-gun-control (she used to be very pro-gun, living in a religious and quite conservative family, but seeing all the mass shootings sort of changed her mind). How do they deal with stress? if she were lying to make herself seem like a better person, she’d say praying, but she knows full well that she can’t remember the last time she prayed. a lot of times, it’s singing, watching movies, reading books sometimes... she used to stress-eat until she started feeling insecure about her body and that fucked up her eating habits. now she won’t eat unless she has to, and when she’s stressed, sometimes she’ll unintentionally not eat a full meal for a day or two. What would make them lose hope? either losing someone close to her, or losing the trust/faith of someone close to her. if someone she loved stopped believing in her and made that apparent, she’d be destroyed. Where do they live? houston, texas!

What are their hobbies? acting, singing, dancing, guitar, watching/being in musicals, reading play scripts, playing and singing in worship band, baking, modeling for photographer friends sometimes... etc etc. Do they believe in ghosts? heaven, yes. ghosts, no. What would they change about their past? she might not actually change this about her past, but she’s always been curious what her life would have been like if she was not brought up in the church. What are their thoughts on wolves? weird. off-brand dogs that scream at the moon. Do they have a thick skin? when it comes to acting, yes. in life, though, definitely not. she can take any criticism of her performances with grace, but the minute someone makes her personally feel bad, she just crumbles. When was the last time they cried? the last time she cried was probably a day or so ago when she laughed so hard she almost peed herself. she was leading a small group bible meeting with pizza, soda and everything, and she was giving her little talk, and because her mind was still on pizza, she accidentally said “crust” instead of “christ” though, the last time she really cried was two months ago, when her sister Libby died.

Would they ever kill someone? only if she needed to do so for the greater good, she tells herself. though, truthfully, if it were between her life and someone else’s and the only way she could live was by killing the other, she’d do it. Do they have good intuition? she doesn’t realize it fully, but she definitely does. What is their favourite food? cheesecake is up there. also chicken caesar salads. What is their full name? leila chase reinmann. chase was the name her parents would have given her if she were a boy (which they expected her to be), but they decided it worked as a feminine name as well. Have they ever been in a plane? several times! her longest plane trip was probably from texas to new york for an acting job when she was thirteen. Do they like to socialize? hell yeah!! she genuinely loves socializing, though she’s come to realize that there’s a big difference in the socializing she does at bible study, church and school, versus what she does at rehearsal and with her theatre friends. there’s also a HUGE difference in the way she socializes with either of those groups compared to the type of socialization she’s found herself to enjoy most: aimless socialization at kickbacks, parties, spontaneous food runs in the middle of the night, and all that. she’s found Darby to be one of the best companions for those. What are some of their traits? she’s an extrovert, definitely. she’s faithful, devoted, unrestrained, creative, artistic, uninhibited, slightly insecure, realistic, selfish, hardworking and a bit conceited. Where do they like to visit? she’s always one to go out and watch a movie. new york is one of her favorite places, though, as is california. she’s in love with the arts culture there. What is something they like that others wouldn’t suspect? smoking weed. whenever she mentions it, other people nearly pop their eyes out of their heads in shock. Have they ever been in love? With who? not really in love. she’s been sexually attracted to people, and she’s been romantically infatuated with people, but she’s never been in love, if that makes any sense. Can they handle their feelings in a healthy way? depends on the source of the feelings. sometimes it’s not a problem, but often, if the feelings are self-deprecating or a real emotional dig, she’ll cope in less-than-ideal ways. Are they better with their words or fists? it’s not an option, but her thoughts are the most rational part of her. she’s not a physical fighter, and her words often don’t come out in the way she hopes they will. What makes them smile? performing, singing, church, and friends. If they were going on a month long vacation, where would they go? new york, definitely. she’d see everything there was to see there!
