Tips from a Beta Reading Writer
This one's for the scenes with multiple characters, and you're not sure how to keep everyone involved.
Writing group scenes is chaos. Someone’s talking, someone’s interrupting, someone’s zoning out thinking about breadsticks. And if you’re not careful, half your cast fades into the background like NPCs in a video game. I used to struggle with this so much—my characters would just exist in the scene without actually affecting it. But here’s what I've learned and have started implementing:
✨ Give everyone a job in the scene ✨
Not their literal job—like, not everyone needs to be solving a crime or casting spells. I mean: Why are they in this moment? What’s their role in the conversation?
My favourite examples are:
The Driver: Moves the convo forward. They have an agenda, they’re pushing the action.
The Instigator: Pokes the bear. Asks the messy questions. Stirring the pot like a chef on a mission.
The Voice of Reason: "Guys, maybe we don’t commit arson today?"
The Distracted One: Completely in their own world. Tuning out, doodling on a napkin, thinking about their ex.
The Observer: Not saying much, but noticing everything. (Quiet characters still have presence!)
The Wild Card: Who knows what they’ll do? Certainly not them. Probably about to make things worse.
If a character has no function, they’ll disappear. Give them something—even if it’s just a side comment, a reaction, or stealing fries off someone’s plate. Keep them interesting, and your readers will stay interested too.

Thinking about how Jonathan genuinely doesn’t realize how lovable and kind he is because almost all his life he’s been told he’s a disgrace. A bad child, a disobedient child. A stain on the family, on everyone he’s ever known and loved.
“I would never agree with anything my father told me I am,” he says, but can you see it? The pain behind his eyes as he says it, the lies spewing from his mouth?
Jonathan knows he shouldn’t believe what he was told. He shouldn’t believe what was drilled into his head since his young years. But some nights, he stares in the mirror and berates himself for what he’s done or what he hasn’t done. He lays on the couch and stares at the ceiling, the lingering feeling of being a horrible person hanging over him and he does nothing to fight it or bat it away.
Maybe he’ll fade from memory if he stays here and no one will miss him because what’s there to mourn about someone who couldn’t just be a little nicer? Who couldn’t be perfect after all this time of priding himself on being the opposite? Because if he was perfect there would be no reason to bash on himself the way he’d been bashed on.

Pro tip! If somebody offends you, did you know that it is not a good idea to rip the timeline in half, remove the memories of the man’s lover, encase the memories in a ghostly body cursed to endlessly travel the various timelines for all eternity, and leave the book revealing how to timeline hop where the man can see it and slowly tear apart his own soul trying to get back to his beloved? Instead, try therapy!

Writing how a character’s “system” of their self-blaming complex works is actually so interesting bc wdym Aurum can’t even possibly conceive the thought of a reality where he isn’t at fault for every little bad thing that happens to others. His friend could break a bone and he’d assume it’s because he accidentally said something to them that upset them and they were so preoccupied with being upset that they got distracted and got hurt because they weren’t paying enough attention.
