Can someone please explain Sam Winchester to me?

I am watching Supernatural for the first time (currently half-way through season 8). Full disclosure: I started watching only after having low-key gotten into the Destiel fandom so I was already primed to be more interested in Dean's character, but tbh my expectations were extremely low. But I got hooked immediately. In the first season I liked Dean a bit more, because he was just such a dork trying so hard to be cool and it was adorable and Sam came across to me more as a kinda bland nice guy protagonist type. As the show went on I started liking Dean more and more though and Sam less and less. I have a sibling that I am really close to so I very much relate to Dean and Sam's sibling dynamic and that hasn't changed at all. Even as Sam has become (imho) more and more of a douche-canoe I still think their sibling dynamic is one of the best part of the show (I have gone through periods where I thought my sibling was a total douche-canoe, so in some ways this is even more relatable). But now I'm in season 8 and if anyone likes Sam, I do not understand why. Please, can someone explain? Does he get better in later seasons? He is just coming across as such a brat right now, who blames everything on Dean. I don't think the show is making him unlikeable on purpose, this can't just be me though.
