summary… Mira gets a message that could change the entire course of what she hoped the next year would look like. The center part of it all? Her boyfriend Julien. Is it all true or has she been lied to?

It was late at night when I found out. I felt myself break down immediately, tears streaming down my face in an seemingly endless flow. My phone pinged with another notification, now from someone else.

Julien🤍

“Wanna go stargazing?”

Air was trying to enter my lungs to no avail, heaving heavily as I tried, and failed to calm down. I could barely even make out the words on my screen, let alone unlock my phone to answer. Eventually, when the blurriness of the tears in my eyes faded, I found myself able to type out a response.

“I think I’m gonna call it a night actually”

“Come on you love the stars!”

“Pick you up in 10 love”

My stomach twisted at his words but I made quick work to hide any remains of my previous meltdown. The run down mascara was wiped off and replaced with a new layer, but only after washing my face with cold water to keep the redness from showing. I checked the time, 01:05am. I was no stranger to sneaking out, in fact I’ve done it plenty of times just for him. How foolish that seems now.

Silence fills the room as I lie on my bed and stare at the ceiling, debating on what to do. A car engine roars up in the distance and I know it’s my sign to go. My body shakes as I climb out of my window, down the walls filled with vines I cling on to. When I turn, I can see his blue Volvo, his face turned in my direction but his features not clearly visible due to the shadows thrown by the bright lights of the street lamps.

I asked him once before why he doesnt just turn on the lights inside the car. He answered it is as to not attract any attention, especially from my parents. It’s not like the roaring engine of his slightly broken car is ensuring half the neighbourhood can hear him driving along these otherwise quiet streets at such a time. Nobody ever noticed still. He is good at hiding things, that is clearer to me now more than ever.

My smile is hesitant yet as bright as I could muster as I open the car door and get in. He immediately leans over to plant a brief kiss against my lips and I let myself indulge in the feeling, even if it feels wrong to do so at this moment. He pulls away, staying close to my face with this sheepish smile that normally makes my heart flutter.

“Hey” he beams, answered only by a tight smile from my side before he pulls away completely to start driving. The car ride is filled with mostly music, some random playlist of his playing that includes mostly hiphop music. There is no talking as I stare out the window, debating on what to do. The field we always go to for these kind of nights enters my vision around ten minutes later, effectively pulling me out of my anxious thoughts.

He takes my hand when we are both out of the car, and leads me to our little bench. It is somewhat out of vision for bystanders at the parking lot, not that there are any at this point of the night.

When we sit down he starts rambling on and on about something that happened at baseball practice today while I stare up at the sky. “He told me, completely out of the blue, it’s my fault we lost against Painswick. That idiot wouldn’t still be in the team if it weren’t for me!” he mutters clearly frustrated. I notice how he conveniently leaves out the part where he broke the boys nose for daring to say such a thing. It is not like I wouldn’t find out, because I always do, but he doesn’t want to worry me. He wants to protect me from the bad, his words not mine.

It turns quiet and just when I think he is about to start rambling again the mood shifts.

“Are you all right?” His tone is soft and worried, something that only ever applies to me according to his friends. The amount of times I’ve heard he is so different with me, like I change him to be a better person. Like he isn’t a wonderful person- wasn’t a wonderful person in my eyes.

He hasn’t changed after all though.

Bitterness creeps into my system but I try my best to push it down, not able to bring myself to confront him just yet. “The stars look lovely tonight” I muse innocently, feeling him look at me but keeping my sight trained on the night sky, glimmering with white dots of various sizes, small specks on the dark blue canvas.

He doesn’t respond right away, as if to decide whether he should keep asking or blame it on one of my weird moods I sometimes get into. Not so wisely, he decides to continue. “That doesn’t answer my question Mira” scepticism creeps into his voice now, expecting a blow that is sure to follow shortly after.

There is no use in hiding it anymore. I take a deep breath. “I don’t want to lie to you” I tell him with the most neutral tone I could muster, my face still turned towards the spectacle above us. “Like you have for the past five months” I turn to face him now, our gazes connecting. His expression fades, tension visible in the way he clenches his jaw.

“What do you mean darling?” His eyebrows raise in question, giving me hope that what my friend told me today was a lie after all, that he has no clue because it never happened. Though that is the reason why I was always called naive, especially ever since I started dating the schools proclaimed badboy, the trouble child.

“Mira I’m telling you this is a bad idea” my best friend repeats once more, the words constantly being thrown at me ever since I agreed to go on a date with Julien.

I sigh, turning to her while trying to get my earrings in, brushing my dark hair behind my ear. “He seems really nice to me, you know I hate when people go by other peoples opinions” over and over again the same discussion, the same arguments, the same outcome.

Julien got to our school this year, making the baseball team right away but not without run ins with the other players. In the span of only two weeks he managed to get our team a first win in two years, get kicked off said team just to be reinstated shortly after. Girls fan over him wherever you look, so I kept my distance. That is until he caught me playing guitar and asked me out on a date, to this concert of a band he likes, seemingly out of the blue. I don’t know why, but I also wasn’t opposed so I agreed.

She shakes her head as she watches me, disapproval clear in her eyes. “He will hurt you”

“You can’t know that Isa”

She was right after all. Isa might absolutely suck at history but her intuition seemingly never fails her, or me for that matter. Julien stares back at me blankly while I keep quiet, looking at him with utmost calmness. “Were you saving up for reparations on your car or why were you so desperate for money you were willing to date me as a bet Julien?” My tone is icy, trying to keep up a facade of indifference but I crumble when he gapes at me, a liar caught. Tears escape my eyes in an instant, not a chance of stopping them.

He shook his head as I stand up, and reaches forward to hold on to me by my wrist. “No no, I can explain this, please listen to me Mirabelle, I can’t-“ he tries desperately, hanging on to me like his life depended on it. Blood draws from my lower lip due to the force I use to bite down on it.

“Let go Julien” I ask him, pain lacing my words.

“Don’t do this” he begs, pulling me towards him while standing up and wrapping his arms around me. A light sob escapes me, causing him to pull back and cup my cheeks. “Let me explain, just five minutes, please” his voice breaks as he pleads and I can see the way his own eyes fill up with unshed tears.

It takes everything in me to try and walk away, but not even that could stop the hint of hope blooming in my heart. I nod slowly while the salty solution taints my cheeks first, and then his thumbs with which he wipes them away.

His hands never leave my face, nor do his eyes leave mine as he starts to explain, with great urgency in his voice.

“It was a stupid fucking dare that I should have never accepted, even with the money attached to it” he starts and I roll my eyes, making him flinch back ever so slightly, not used to this side of me, but not getting deterred. “It was my first week in the team, first party with them. Sebastian was talking shit about you. I didn’t even know you but it made me so fucking angry” the rage was radiating from his body, but I wasn’t scared, never of him. I swallowed down hard nonetheless. I knew I wasn’t particularly popular, lots of people made fun of me, but based on his reaction it might have been worse than I ever could have imagined.

His hands wandered from my waist to my hands, squeezing them to comfort me, hesitating to continue but doing so anyway. “I told them to shut up and thats when they started with the whole bet thing, adding the cash so I couldn’t resist after what happened to my dad” I remember him talking vaguely of his father and the accident he was in, how he had helped save up money the first three months we were together. I was in such a shock at this moment I couldn’t even move anymore.

“I accepted it but I swear Mira I wanted to blow the whole thing off after sobering up. Even more so when I saw you in the hall, the angel that you are. They wouldn’t let me, they wanted to get me kicked off of school, I couldn’t go through that, not again” my heart broke for the boy that was forced to change schools to be able to afford it and live closer to the hospital. Suddenly, I felt selfish for ever believing differently.

“I wanted to tell you so often I really fucking did but I couldn’t, and I will never regret anything more. But I beg you,” he doesn’t beg, its one of his principles, though he has done it plenty today. “Don’t leave me, I will do anything you want me to for your forgiveness, anything” that was a promise, I could tell by his voice, his expression.

Call me naive again, I don’t care. I can see the sincerity in his eyes, as well as the burning regret. It may be wrong to forgive him this fast, but I’ve never been one to make the right choices.

“You have one more chance, one. You make one more mistake like that and I’ll personally kick you out of school” I threaten, only making him smile at me with that half grin half smirk look of his that could make me melt anywhere anytime.

A tear had slid down his cheek sometime during our exchange but he ignored it and beamed at me excitedly. “You won’t have to sunshine”
