“Haneul!” She didn’t know where the voice was coming from. “Haneul!”
Her head broke out of the water, Haneul threw her arms over the side as she coughed. She wasn’t sure how long she was under there but it hadn’t worked like she had hoped, it usually calmed her but her heart was racing more than when she had started.
“Haneul.” She finally heard where it was coming from as it was accompanied by three loud knocks. “Are you okay?”
The woman wiped the water from her face. “Yeah I’m fine.” She called out and relaxed a bit.
Hongjoong nodded as if she could see him before adding. “Food’s here.”
“I’ll be out in a minute.”
The woman leaned back and put her head against the tile, she let out a sigh as her eyes closed. Haneul’s mind ran back to what she was thinking about under the water, the vision had just been so clear in her mind a few seconds ago. she saw a mountain with the figure of a woman on top then it flashed and her memory changed, now she was watching herself claw her way out of a pond drenched and coughing up water, and then it changed again, two mounds of dirt sat in front of her with two crosses sitting on top. Haneul opened her eyes gasping and pulling her legs into her chest, the water was now cold. She shivered for a bit as tears started to pour from her eyes.
Hongjoong sat at the table slurping up the Japchae that he had ordered. He tried to focus on anything else as he ate, he pulled out his phone and tried to pull his mind from the woman until he heard the door open. He looked back and watched Haneul rub the towel against her hair, dressed in her pajamas. She walked over to the table and grabbed the bowl.
“I just got Japchae cause I didn’t know what you liked.” He said and Haneul mumbled out a thank you as she sat in the chair.
She started to eat, not realizing just how hungry she was. It was hard getting used to being human, Haneul didn’t eat all three meals when she was immortal. She never had to, she could have lunch and be good for the day but now she felt horrible if she didn’t eat in a couple hours. Hongjoong laughed at the woman as she shoveled food into her mouth. Slowly the tension started fading as the night continued on, Hongjoong got his makeshift bed ready on the couch as Haneul tried to relax. her eyes locked on the tv, she looked like she was watching but the woman was too still and silent. Her head rested against the arm of the chair, but she was in her mind. She seemed different that entire night, Hongjoong could feel it as she went off to her room.
He wondered if he did something wrong, and that same sucky feeling filled his chest. He felt bad for some reason as he tried to push it out of his mind. As soon as this was done, he wouldn’t have to feel like this anymore. He could go back to what he would always do, a smile crossed his mind as he could hear the music. Hongjoong missed the club, that’s where he thrived and made most of his friends that he was actually close to and it’s how he weeded out the mythical and the non-mythical. He had to make sure that this Dokkaebi was real and would help Haneul, his life relied on the woman. The though left a bad taste in his mouth as he drowned it out with some soju and trashy tv, it almost made up for everything.
He didn’t even notice when Haneul had gotten up and went into her room, nor did he notice the night getting darker. He barely noticed when the only glow came from the tv or when he looked over and saw Haneul was missing. Hongjoong wasn’t sure what to do, he felt so restless for some reason. Demons didn’t need sleep but he felt so restless but tired at the same time. The night seemed to slowly change until it was morning again, that had been the longest night for Hongjoong.
••••
It was around the same time that they had met the Dokkaebi that he had asked them to meet him the next night. San and Hongjoong both had their phones out as they stared up at the building, their eyes flicking between the abandoned looking building and the location that they had gotten from the Goblin.
“You sure this is the place?” San asked not even looking over at the Demon, Hongjoong nodded as he stared down at the address. “I’m pretty sure.”
Haneul stared up at the building, her stomach flipped at the sight. Maybe it would’ve been better if she had seen it in the day but even then it wouldn’t be much. it felt like she would get murder if she went in. Her eyes looked around hoping for more of a crowd, it wasn’t too far from the rest of society. Just down the street Haneul could see the sparkling lights of the city but it seemed so far away. It was only her, the Werewolf, the Demon, and the Goblin but there might’ve been more. She didn’t know who or if the Dokkaebi had brought someone else.
“Um are you sure. I think we should go back to the cafe.” Haneul said nervously as she turned around. Just then, someone stepped out of the shadows. “I though you really needed my help.”
Haneul gulped at the voice and his words. she didn’t appreciate the Dokkaebi. She looked over her shoulder and saw him with a sly smirk on his face, it felt a bit as Wooyoung saw Haneul glaring at him.
“What?” Haneul turned around, and his smile got wider again. How fun was it to push the buttons of the gods.
He sighed and crossed his arms. “It just sucks because Seokga was actually excited to meet you guys. He said he knew exactly how to help you Haneul.”
Her expression changed, her eyes went wide as she took a step closer to the Goblin. He knew that he had got her with those couple words, this would be fun.
“really?” She asked and Wooyoung nodded. “Yeah but I guess I’ll just have to tell him that you guys flaked out.”
Haneul almost yelled out as he went to turn around. “No! We’ll go.”
He smiled and turned back around, he looked at the two men that stood on either side of Haneul. They would be a little harder to play with but he had a plan.
“Do you have the money?” He asked and Haneul nodded, she was the one who had done the most talking. “Bring it here.”
She turned to San who’s eyes were locked on the Goblin. Hongjoong stared at the man, his eyes hooded as he didn’t seem to blink. Haneul motioned for the money but the Werewolf sighed.
“I don’t trust him.” San hissed out. Haneul sighed and looked back. “He’s all that we have.”
He hated when Haneul looked at him with those eyes. She looked up at him pleading with him, San was in charge of the woman but he knew how much she wanted this. So he reached into the back of the car and pulled the duffle bag, Haneul groaned as San gave it to her. She turned and walked up to Wooyoung and transferred the bag to him.
His mouth went dry as he saw the stacks of cash in the bag, he really had hit the jackpot. He smiled again as he looked up at the woman, he reached out and grabbed her wrist.
“Keep up.” He called out to the two men before they disappeared into the building.
They were frozen there for a second, Hongjoong was confused on what happened and San was trying to figure out what to do. By the time they moved to chase them through the building, Wooyoug and Haneul were long gone. His grip on her wrist was tight as he pulled her through the halls, it was almost too dark to see anything. There was some light from outside that poured through the windows but besides that it was completely dark.
“Where are we going?” Haneul asked the Goblin as the same uneasy feeling filled her stomach.
“Don’t worry about it.” Was all the answer she got from him.
The halls seemed twisty and she swore that they had gone up and down 15 sets of stairs. Haneul tried to pull from his grasp, but every time he tightened his grip on her. Finally he stopped, they stood in a room that reeked of mold and dust. Haneul wasn’t sure when the last time it was cleaned or if it had ever been clean. The woman felt his hand fall from her wrist and then all of the sudden she was there alone, she heard the door slam shut.
Hongjoong and San heard the door and Haneul’s scream, that’s when they both jumped into action. They split up and ran down the halls, searching every room. The halls seemed alive as the creaking and groaning got louder, Hongjoong could hear the soft giggles of the Dokkaebi and his running but it was hard to track where they were coming from.
Haneul searched for her phone, dropping to her knees as she scoured the ground for the phone she had dropped. mumbling out something as she finally found her phone, the woman turned on her flashlight. She pointed it around the room until the light landed on something, a figure stood in the corner and she screamed as it moved closer to her. It was a woman, she took a step forward and Haneul pushed herself up running towards the door. Haneul banged on the door as she looked back, seeing the woman covered in blood.
“Was it you? I had so much to live for!” The woman asked softly, Haneul fumbled with the door. She groaned as she tried to pull it. “Ya, answer me!”
Haneul pulled harder as she heard the figure behind her getting closer. Tears started to pour out of her eyes. “Please!” She begged
“I’m gonna kill you!” The thing behind Haneul yelled just as the door opened. Haneul sprinted forward into the darkness.
Tears poured from her eyes as she ran down the hall, move voices called out before feeling something grab her ankle. Haneul crashed to the floor and as she looked back, a man was holding onto her. Blood dripped from his mouth as he was covered in dirt and died blood, tears poured from his eyes.
“Please help me.” He cried out. “Please.”
“Let go.” Haneul tried to pull from his grasp but the man grabbed her ankle with his other hand. Slowly more figures surrounded her, grabbing at her and begging.
Hongjoong could hear her screams as they echoed through the hall, his heart raced as he ran through hall after hall. He groaned as he seemed to be running in circles.
“Haneul!” The Demon yelled out trying to follow her voice, he raced up stairs and kicked open doors. “Haneul, where are you.”
Then all of the sudden, the building went silent. The only sound he could hear was his own breathing and the clicking of his shoes against the floor. The silence scared him, his heart raced in his ears as Hongjoong continued forward, his eyes grew accustomed to the dark until he saw it. It was small but out of the corner of his eye, he saw a small glow coming from around the corner. Hongjoong stopped in his tracks and gulped harshly as he slowly walked over. It was a phone, Hongjoong slowly bent down and picked it up seeing the wallpaper of the woman.
His heart dropped as he stood up, either this was a good or a bad thing. Either Haneul was close by or the Dokkaebi was going to be getting a visit later that night. He walked forward and looked into the rooms, the sound of soft sniffles made him let out a breath of relief. He shined the light into the room and in the corner, Haneul was on the ground with her knees into her chest. Hongjoong took a deep breath and walked up to the woman. He placed his hand on her shoulder, Haneul screamed and tried to push him away.
“It’s just me.” Hongjong said softly and Haneul looked up. Her eyes went wide as she saw the Demon. She jumped up and wrapped her arms around him.
“Hongjoong.” She cried into his shoulder. The man was frozen, unsure on what to do. He wanted to push her away but she held on too tightly.
The Demon wrapped his arms around her and softly patted her back. “There there.” He said as she cried into his shoulder. The soft sobs racked through her body and Hongjoong felt his shoulder become wet.
Haneul’s hands gripped onto the back of his shirt, not letting him out of her grasp. Hongjoong sighed and felt his heart slowly calm down, the hug was helping him as well as her.
••••
“We can talk about this.” Wooyoung begged as he flailed, his hands grabbed onto San’s arm as his feet tried to find their footing. San glared at the Goblin hissing out. “Oh yeah, give me one good reason I shouldn’t throw you out this widow?”
He moved forward a bit and Wooyoung yelled out as he looked over his shoulder at the ground that was sitting there 6 floors down. Wooyoung gripped onto the Werewolf harder. Hongjoong groaned as he lifted Haneul higher, carrying her bridal style. San pulled back a bit as he saw the woman in Hongjoong’s arms. He slowly put Haneul down but held onto her, she looked over. San saw the tears streaks that ran down her face and how her makeup was ruined, her eyes locked with the Dokkaebi and Wooyoung’s eyes went wide.
“Said she saw ghosts.” Hongjoong answered and San sighed.
“Please, I’m sorry. I didn’t know it was filled with Gwisin. It was my boss’s idea.” he begged staring directly at Haneul. Hongjoong turned her around so that the Goblin was staring at his back.
San pushed him back over the edge and the Goblin yelled out flailing again as one of his hands dug their nails. Haneul slowly looked up at Hongjoong, he wore his usual hard to read expression. He held onto her waist tightly, not moving as he stared down at her and almost through her. Haneul gulped and sniffled, his hand left her waist and moved up.
His hand slowly met her cheek and his thumb swiped the tear away. In that moment, Haneul forgot how to breathe. She leaned into his soft touch and got lost in eyes. He moved and Haneul’s eyes fluttered closed, wanting to feel his lips against hers.
“Why don’t you take her back home. Me and-“ San paused for a second tilting his head. “It’s Wooyoung right?” The Goblin nodded wildly.
San looked over at Hongjoong smiling. “Wooyoung and I are gonna have a talk until you come back.”
Haneul opened her eyes, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment as Hongjoong grabbed her hand. She tried to hide her face feeling stupid in that second. They turned around and walked back through the abandoned building, Haneul looked down at the ground. She was too scared to look up, she could still see them and feel them pulling at her. They all had disappeared but Haneul was scared that they were going to pop out and pull her back. Her hand gripped tighter onto Hongjoong’s hand even though she didn’t want to be near the Demon. They stepped out into the night and Haneul felt better immediately, her eyes looked up smiling at the stars.
They twinkled in the night as if saying hi to her, and she felt like they were checking in on her. Hongjoong let go of her hand as he opened up his door, Haneul sighed and got into the car. The engine turned on and Haneul leaned her head against the window like usual, as she waited for it to be another silent ride.
“You okay?” Hongjoong asked breaking the silence.
Haneul nodded her head. “Yeah I’m fine.”
“No you’re not.” He answered and Haneul could feel the tears prick at her eyes. She felt so tired and just wanted to sleep for years but she didn’t have much time left.
Looking down at her watch, she only had 26 days, 7 hours, and 28 minutes. It felt like she had been going for what felt like days, slowly the tears started to fall from her eyes. She fell forward and held onto her legs. Hongjoong rubbed her back, not saying anything as he let her cry. After a while, the crying had stopped but Hongjoong didn’t move his hand. He knew that Haneul needed this after the day she had, and for a second Hongjoong though she was asleep.
“Haneul, I wanted you to know that you don’t have to worry, we’ll get your powers back. I’ll make sure of it.” He said although he wasn’t sure if the woman was awake. Haneul gulped at his words but closed her eyes again.
Her heart skipped a beat, she hated how much he was confusing her. He could be so mean to her but other times, all she wanted was the Demon. She took a breath and tried to tune the world out.
Finally the car slowed to a stop, the stop made Haneul pick her head up. She yawned and leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes again. Hongjoong walked around the car and opened up the passenger side door.
“Come on, we’re home.” He said softly as he tried to wake up the woman. Haneul groaned and turned away from him.
Hongjoong sighed and leaned forward, unbuckling her seatbelt before pulling her into his arms. “Okay, up and at ‘em.”
He stood up with the woman in his arms, Haneul rested her head on his shoulder as her arms were lazily wrapped around his neck. He groaned as he stood up.
“God, you’re heavy.”
“‘M not.” She answered groggily and Hongjoong just nodded. “Okay, Miss sleepyhead.”
He waved his finger and the car door closed. Hongjoong made his way up to her apartment while still hold the woman who floated between being conscious and unconscious. He waved his hand once again and the lock clicked before the door swung open, Hongjoong turned to his side as he carried Haneul into her house and into her room.
Slowly and softly he placed her onto her bed, pulling the covers over her as he sat on the edge for a bit. He got up and went to walk away when he felt something or someone grab his wrist. He looked over his shoulder to see Haneul holding tightly onto his wrist.
“Please don’t leave me.” She said in a pleading voice. The Demon gulped and hesitated for a second before pulling his wrist from her grasp.
Haneul laid in her bed on her side as she watched Hongjoong turn off the lights and close the front door behind him. Silent tears hit her pillow as she pulled the comforter up more, for a second she that he might’ve but she was left in the dark, lonely and scared…just like she had been for a while.

Lee Haneul was born as a gift from the Heavens….or at least that’s what her mother had told her. between her dazed state and the days where all she did was sleep, Ryu Dal-rae explained where Hanuel came from. It was know to the girl that she was the only child her parents could have, the whispers that followed her through the village and her father’s attitude told her that. What wasn’t known to the girl was Haneul was a gift from the gods.
Near the village that Haneul and her family had grown up at was a plot of land that the villagers liked to call the “Heavens.” It was a marketplace on a certain plot of ground close to the road, on this certain plot of land it was said that magic seemed to thrive and that was where the gods came to do their dirty work and charm a few people. You could trade for certain enchanted items but many of the items for sell were magic. People flocked to the stalls for a small taste of magic, or for their one wish to be granted. The wishes varied from person to person but most of them were family issues.
“Please grant us a good harvest.”
“Please let my daughter marry a rich man.”
“Would you please watch over my animals and make sure they grow strong and healthy.”
“Allow my son to get a good job as an official.”
They flocked in huge groups but they all came with their price. Magic was no simple thing and it took more than what people had. A wish for son could cost someone a year of servitude for the certain god, or a simple wish for health could cost memories from someone’s childhood. Using magic was risky and everyone knew that but still the came wanting more and more, cursing the gods when it backfired. Ryu Dal-rae tried to be the best daughter for her family, since she could walk and talk the young girl did everything for her family. She did her chores without complaint, never talked back to her parents, took care of her siblings, and always followed their orders to a T. So when her parents told her to never step foot in the marketplace ran by the gods, Dal-rae took the longer way back home so she wouldn’t have to pass by the “Heavens.”
Dal-rae would watch as her friends raced off and weave through the stalls, risking a chance to see the gods. She would pull from their grasp as they tried to pull her past the line of no return but the girl would turn around and walk straight home. Her parents cursed out anyone who went there saying that they were “selling their soul to the devil” and Dal-rae never made a fuss about it. As the woman grew and matured into a beautiful young lady, she forgot all about the gods and instead welcomed the arranged marriage that her parents had found, with open arms. Just like she had with her parents, Dal-rae wanted to be the best wife for her new husband.
The man she married was harsh and aggressive, he resented his parents for the marriage and took it out on Dal-rae but she pushed it to the side. She worked hard to be the best for him, but no matter what she did it wasn’t enough and the only thing that would be enough, her body refused to do. Dal-rae’s womb was inhospitable for a child, it didn’t matter how hard she tried. The woman tried everything, going to every physician and tried elixir that the doctors had suggested, she asked her friends and used every tip she had received from them. She even went to Shamans, hoping that a blessing would change her circumstances but even after that, nothing changed.
All she wanted was a child, whether that child was a girl or boy. Dal-rae prayed every night to the gods but everyday her body betrayed her desire to produce a child for her and her husband. she fell into a depression as she watched everyone else give birth to their sons who grew to be great young men. Her shame and sadness grew more every year and her husband became more embarrassed, pulling away from his wife emotionally. All Dal-rae wanted was a child, but instead all she got was shame from her village, her own family disowned her and her husband barely even looked at her. The only peace and happiness the woman felt came from her daily walks through nature.
It brought back memories of her childhood, when she would chase frogs after filling up the buckets with water from the stream. It brought back memories of when everyone was proud of her, and it stopped from the bad thoughts consuming her mind. When that wouldn’t help, she would start singing and it felt like the whole world would disappear. Her mind would fill with thoughts of her holding her child and singing them to sleep, until one day she wasn’t the only one singing. As she opened her eyes, Dal-rae stood right in front of the marketplace she had been avoiding since she was just a kid.
Her feet toed the line of magic, and as she rocked on her feet she could feel the magic. Every time she rocked forward, she could feel the small surge of energy and emotions. It buzzed through her entire body, making her heart race and all her pain and worries leave her head almost instantly. People looked so happy there, as they walked through the stalls. A smile crossed her face and she wondered why her parents kept her from such a joyous place. With one step, Dal-rae crossed into the gods domain and crossed the point of no return. The energy felt different now that she was inside the market place, her emotions were running on high.
She felt so driven but also so tired and sad, her eyes landed on one of the goddesses. She was absolutely beautiful and Dal-rae almost ran forward, crashing to her knees in front of the goddess as her hands reached out to grab onto anything. Her hands tangled in the goddess’s dress.
“Please!” The woman cried. “Please grant me a wish, I’ll do anything for you.”
Her head was too clouded for any reasonable thinking. The goddess glared down at the woman trying to yank her dress out of the woman’s hands. A small circle started forming around the goddess and the woman, people gasped and whispered watching the sight. no one approached the distraught woman or furious goddess, scared of what would happen.
“You dare to touch me mortal?” She hissed as she tried to pull harder but Dal-rae’s grasp was ironclad. She brought it up to her tear covered face as snot ran from her nose.
“I beg of you, I’ve done everything right.” She said muffled as her face dug into the silky fabric. Women covered children eye and turned themselves, sure that this would be the last they would see of the poor woman.
“Get off of me. You don’t deserve to touch me.” Jowangshin hissed out and kicked the woman’s chest finally breaking her from her dress. That didn’t stop Dal-rae, she got onto her knees and crawled forward trying to grab the goddess’s dress again. “I’ve give you anything you want, money, servitude, my family. Please, I’ve done everything right.”
The goddess pulled her dress back, opening her mouth to bark something at the woman but another voice boomed from the crowd. “Jowangshin.”
The deep voice made everyone jump except for Dal-rae who wad now gripping on the grass and crying into the ground. The crowed parted like the seas and a man walked into the middle of the newly formed circle, his gaze piercing into the goddess’s soul. The whispering started again as the man stopped in the middle, his eyes fell to the distraught woman before glaring back up at the goddess.
“Mireuk.” Jowangshin said both annoyed and relieved that the god was there.
“What is going on?” His voice dropped in volume but not in his commanding tone. The goddess’s eyes went wide as she pointed down at the woman. “Didn’t you see her, she grabbed my dress and covered it in her snot.”
Mireuk stepped forward and grabbed her arm harshly, whispering so that only she could hear. “That’s your job. You comfort humans and grant their wish.”
“Then you do it.” She hissed back and turned to walk away. The god sighed watching her walk away.
Dal-rae felt a hand on her shoulder, slowly her tears lessened just enough for her to sit up and see who it was. A sad smile covered her face as she saw another god squatting down in front of her.
“What is wrong, my dear?’ He asked softly, Dal-rae brought her hands up in front of her begging the god. “Please grant me a wish.”
“What is that.”
Her tears came back as she barely pushed out, snot ran down her face as she spat as she spoke absolutely distraught. “Please give me a child. I’m an outcast in my own town, my family doesn’t speak to me anymore, I’ve lost my friends, and my husband barely acknowledges me. Please I’ve done everything right.”
The god sighed once again as his head dropped, he was stuck with a predicament. He had to make a deal with her, that was his whole job but the woman who kneeled in front of him was so broken. She had no one, her friends and family had given up on her, the man she had been married to wasn’t even there for her and she had been ostracized from her village.
“I’ll make you a deal, I’ll grant you your wish.” Dal-rae picked up her head and gasped, more tears rushed to her eyes but these were happy tears. The woman threw herself forward wrapping her arms around his neck hugging the god tightly. “Oh thank you, thank you so much. You are a powerful god.”
He pulled the woman’s arms from around his neck, placing them softly in her lap as he explained. “But, if it is a boy, he will inherit his father’s anger and hatred. If it is a girl-“ he paused for a second, Dal-rae leaned in waiting for his next words. “Are you sure you want this?”
She nodded franticly, her hands gripped his tightly. Mireuk sighed.
“You’ll lose what you value most.”
9 months later, Dal-rae’s wish was granted. Haneul was born healthy but her mother fell into a sickness, she became bedridden and was unable to take care of her newborn so the job fell onto her husband. Yong-sam found it hard and uncomfortable at first, unsure on how to take care of a baby along with his usual routine but as she grew he found a way.
It was easy to pretend that he had a son when Haneul was a baby, but as the girl slowly grew Yong-sam’s shame and resentment slowly grew. He tried to teach the girl all the things that a boy would need to learn but every time he was reminded that Haneul was not his son.
“Hold your sword up Haneul.” The young girl groaned as she held up the stick she was using as a sword. It was one of her father’s old practice swords and it was twice as big as her and twice her weight.
Her arms faltered as it clattered to the floor, Haneul’s arms felt tighter from picking it up and holding it over her head over and over again for what felt like an hour. Haneul picked it up from the floor and picked int up again, it wobbled in her hands but her father smiled before continuing with his lesson.
“Now you never want to hold it like-“ Haneul zoned out as her father droned on, she tried to listen but her mind wandered elsewhere.
Her eyes wandered over to where some of her friends were, she watched as they played and ran around squealing and laughing. Haneul would rather be other there having fun with her friends than practicing swords with her father.
“Pay attention.” Yong-sam hit the back of his daughter’s head. “You need to know how to hold a sword if you want to use one.”
Haneul hissed and rubbed the back of her head. Her eyes looked at her father as he picked up his own sword, Haneul followed along with what he was doing. She would nod and listen as he continued but every once in a while, her eyes and mind would drift off to the children playing off in the distance. One of the girls stopped and looked back at Haneul, smiling and laughing. Yong-sun held up her hand beckoning for Haneul to come play with them. Haneul smiled back, she knew them well and wanted to play.
“I want you to hit me Haneul.” Her father’s voice pulled Haneul into the present. “As hard as you can and with good form.”
The young girl tightened her grip around the wooden sword and lifted it up. Haneul wobbled for a second before running up to her father, she pulled it as high as she could over her head and brought it down when she reached her dad but it barely did anything to the man. He laughed and pushed her sword back, Haneul crashed to the ground.
“You call that hitting? I want you to try with all your might.” He egged her on.
Haneul got back up and grabbed her wooden sword as she tried again, she held it as high as she could but due to the size, it did nothing as it came down on her father. Yong-sam was annoyed by the second attempt, by the time he was her age he had been able to take on his brothers where were stronger than him.
“Try again.” He hissed out but Haneul’s arms gave out.
She shook her head as she but the stick down panting. “Dad, I don’t want to hurt you. I don’t think sword fighting is for me, can I go play?”
His fantasy came crashing around him the second she started speaking, he was stupid for thinking that Haneul could be his son. Even the training gear that she wore looked awkward, she would always just be his daughter. How could his only child be a girl.
“Fine. Go on.” He spat out and picked up the wooden sword. He turned and walked away from his daughter.
Haneul ripped off the gear and rushed over to where her friends stood laughing as she saw them. Yong-sam wanted a child that wouldn’t bring him shame and Haneul wanted someone who understood her. Neither would get what they wanted, at least not in this lifetime

“Next time can you find someone who can actually help me?” Haneul asked as she slipped the three leaf clover into her pocket. Yeosang said it would protect her from harm.
“What do you mean? Didn’t Yeosang help you?”
She shook her head. “Not really, he just told me about another guy who can help me. Something called a Dokkaebi. I don’t know what that is.”
Hongjoong let out a laugh, he had many run in with many Dokkaebi. They were fun because of how mischievous they were. He had a lot of fun with them but sometimes they were really mean and annoying.
“And all it costed was a promise to bring him to the city.” Haneul added proud of herself. That made Hongjoong laugh louder.
“aish, you really are a human, you dummy.” He said and flicked her head. Haneul gasped. “Dummy? How dare you.”
“Great you owe something to a Fae. This is absolutely amazing.” He hissed out and Haneul looked at his confusedly.
She rubbed her head and answered. “You said he was your friend.”
“Yeah but I’m not going around making deals with him.” Hongjoong ran his hand through his hair.
Haneul turned to the Demon going to say something but before she could, someone pulled her away and spun her from the Demon. Hongjoong cocked his eyebrow as he saw San with a concerned expression.
He cupped her face. “Are you okay? Did anything happen?” San bombarded the woman with questions checking to see if anything had happened.
“She’s fine but Miss Talks-a-lot made a promise with a Fae.” Hongjoong added and pulled another cigarette from his pack. San looked from the Demon to the woman who put her hands on his shoulders and smiled.
“I’m fine San. I’m glad that you’re worrying about me but can we just go home?” She bent down and picked up the umbrella that San had dropped. The rain had lightened up significantly but San looked drenched, she hoped that he didn’t sit out in the rain worrying about her.
Haneul turned and rushed up to the car, getting into the back and slamming the door closed. Hongjoong took a step closer to the Werewolf, he flicked open his lighter and brought the flame up to the end of his cigarette before flicking it close.
“Don’t look so eager, San. Your puppy’s showing.” He said with a smirk as he blew the smoke into San’s face. The cigarette hung lazily between his lips as he walked across the street and towards the car, instead of getting into the back with Haneul, he opened up the passanger side door.
San let out a growl before walking over to his car, he got into the drivers seat and turned on the ignition. The car sped down the road, the drive silent as Haneul leaned against the window. Her eyes were fixed on the outside.
“So what did you promise him?” San asked looking through the rearview mirror like a dad checking in on their kid.
“To take him into the city.” Haneul mumbled just enough for him to hear. San sighed. “That’s not the worst thing you could’ve promised.”
A small smile flickered on her lips, but she just stared at the moving scenery. The car rolled back into the city which seemed to be clearing up, the sky wasn’t as gray now. It didn’t look as bad as this morning. San groaned as he saw all the spots near his cafe and parked just down the street. They all got out and started towards the cafe.
“It was really nice there.” Haneul said quietly as they continued down the street. A smile crossed her face. “It’s crazy to think that he was in the city when cars were still new and now you have so much knowledge at your fingertips.”
San nodded as he pulled his keys from his pocket and walked up to the door, he went to unlock the door but it opened without an issue. San’s eyes went open as Hongjoong moved and pushed Haneul behind him. San furrowed his eyebrows as he got ready to fight whoever was stupid enough to still from a Werewolf. He slid his hand behind his back as his claws grew.
The two men walked in slowly as Haneul hid behind the Demon. Their eyes swept through the cafe hearing the sounds of dogs whining and San’s eyes landed on the person sitting at one of the tables. Hongjoong stepped forward and made a wall in front of Haneul.
“Finally some damn service.” the man said and leaned back in the chair.
“Who are you?” San called out, Haneul peaked around the two men to see who was in the cafe.
The unknown man stood up. “Someone called for a Dokkaebi.”
Haneul’s eyes went wide as she perked up, her feel pulled her around the Demon and the Werewolf as she held up her hand.
“That was me.” Haneul said and the two men relaxed. San closed his hand handing his claws. “Yeosang said that a Dokkaebi could help.”
Hongjoong cleared his throat and pulled Haneul to the side. She rolled her eyes hating how he always seemed to pull her around.
“Can you stop pulling me.” Haneul hissed out
Hongjoong interrupted the girl. “Do you seriously want to trust a Dokkaebi? They’re worse than…me.”
Haneul rolled her eyes. “Well I’ve already made a deal with a Demon and a Fae so it can’t get worse can it?”
The Dokkaebi looked around and at them. He cleared his throat and crossed his arms. He didn’t like San glaring at him or the whispering happening in the corner. He rubbed his neck.
“Can we hurry this up, I’m kinda on the run from the gods.” Haneul gasped as he said that. She almost ran up to him yelling out. “You know the gods?”
Wooyoung stepped back, making some room between him and the woman. He chuckled a bit nervously. “Yes but we’re not on the best terms.”
“he works for Seokga, that-“ San said hissing out, he took a step forward. Hongjoong stepped in front of the Werewolf stopping him mid sentence. San looked at the Demon as he shook his head.
Haneul shook her head and continued. “It doesn’t matter, can you help me get to the gods?”
Wooyoung looked from the girl, his eyes locked with San before they flicked over to Hongjoong. The Goblin turned away and cleared his throat to suppress the smile and laugh.
“Why should I?” He asked and Haneul gasped. “I’m so glad you deci-what?” Wooyoung crossed his arms and shrugged. “I could help you but why should I?”
Hongjoong stepped forward and spoke mirroring the Goblin’s posture. “Because I’m sure there will be some mischief along the way, and no Dokkaebi would be willing to say no.”
Wooyoung gulped, his mouth opened and closed. San chuckled a bit as Hongjoong smirked. They had backed him in a corner, he mumbled something under his breath. He really did like mischief.
“How about we talk over some food?” Haneul asked glaring back at the Demon. She needed help from the gods and this Dokkaebi was her only lead so Haneul didn’t need Hongjoong scaring him away.
“Yes!” Wooyoung’s eyes went wide, he liked food just as much as mischief. “A plate of buckwheat jelly, and some sorghum and red bean rice cakes would be nice.”
Haneul sat across the Goblin, barely on the edge of her seat as she watched the man stuff his mouth full of food. the smell of buckwheat and red bean filled the cafe, San walked out from behind the counter and placed a plate of red bean cakes on the table. Wooyoung thanked the Werewolf through a mouthful of food. Hongjoong pulled up a chair and straddled the seat.
“So how do you know Yeosang?” Hongjoong asked trying to make conversation. Wooyoung looked up. “We used to go out a lot. He couldn’t use his powers so he relied on me until he met you.”
He glared over at Hongjoong before shoveling more food into his mouth. Haneul tapped her finger against the table impatiently, the woman sighed.
“Can you find the gods?” He froze and looked back up at Haneul. Her eyes begged him.
“It depends, Mireuk doesn’t like my kind.”
“Wouldn’t think that would stop a Dokkaebi.” Hongjoong mumbled out.
They jumped at the sound of the metal chopsticks hitting the plate. His eyes locked with Hongjoong and the two glared at each other, not saying anything. She rolled her eyes and got up, this time it was her who was dragging Hongjoong away instead of him. He hissed as she grabbed his collar and pulled him out of earshot.
“Ow, that hurt.” He whined rubbing his neck. Haneul rolled her eyes. “Get over it you big baby.”
“What? Why’d you pull me over?”
“I need you to stop it.”
“Stop what?” He asked smirking
Haneul hissed out. “Screwing with my people.”
“What do you mean screwing?”
She was at the edge of her wits with him, he had been nothing but a pain in her ass. As soon as she could break this curse, the better.
“I need you to play nice, okay? I don’t care if you don’t like them or don’t get along with them, the sooner we can find the gods and get my powers back, the sooner we can break this deal.”
Hongjoong fake pouted a bit. “I’m a little sad you want to get rid of me that soon.” He gasped and put his hand against his chest. “You’d chose dog breath and one-leg over me?”
“This is what I’m talking about, this is serious Hongjoong. He is our gateway to the gods.” She hissed out before just giving up. “Stay back here while I take care of it.”
“Come on, it was just a joke.” He laughed out as Haneul walked back up to the table.
Wooyoung was almost done with his food when Haneul had come back to the table. He gulped and looked from the woman, he could feel her eyes glare into him. Hongjoong stood leaning against the wall but his eyes were locked on the Dokkaebi.
“Listen, I need this.” Haneul said softly. “I need to get to the gods and I need your help. I’ll pay you.”
He cocked his eyebrow at the mention of money, he leaned back in his seat and gulped the bit. “How much?”
“Enough.” San hissed out as he grabbed the almost empty plates. Wooyoung wasn’t done but he was too scared to say anything different to the Werewolf.
A smile crossed his lips. “I have to speak to Seokga, so let’s meet tomorrow. I’ll send you the location, make sure you bring the money.”
The Dokkaebi got up and walked out of the doors. None of them moved to do anything, Haneul just sighed as San and Hongjoong moved to the girl. Wooyoung laughed as he left the cafe before pulling his phone out.
“Seokga, yeah I got a couple of suckers.” He laughed into the phone and continued down the street.
Hongjoong watched as the man walked away, he didn’t have a good feeling about this but he couldn’t say anything. Haneul wouldn’t listen to reason. So he just turned to the woman who seemed lost in thought, and walked up to her.
“Hey.” He said softly as he touched her shoulder. “’I’ll take you to your house.”
She nodded and stood up, she waved goodbye to San before following Hongjoong out of the building and up to his car. It was already almost night and Haneul wondered how much time had passed when she was with Yeosang. She didn’t have much time but at least her time spent there would live on forever.
••••
Hongjoong never felt like this, so confused on what he was supposed to be feeling. The Demon never cared before, that’s how all Demons were made. Empathy was a foreign concept to him, nothing more than a thing that he saw in shows and movies. He though humans were stupid for caring more than they should for people that were nothing but horrible to them but as he stared at the woman who sat in the passenger side seat, he almost felt bad for her.
His hand ran over his chest pushing harshly where his heart laid, a hiss left his lips as it felt like something was twisting it. Hongjoong blamed it on the stupid curse, if he wasn’t connected to her, if only he didn’t have to so all this for her. Haneul lifted her head from the window and looked over at the Demon, she always hated seeing someone in distress no matter who they were or if she liked them or not.
“Are you okay?” She asked, the Demon nodded and groaned. “My chest feels tight.”
Haneul shifted in her seat, so that she was facing him better. She clapped her hands together before rubbing them together, feeling her hands heating up. Hongjoong looked from the road over at Haneul, he let out a small chuckle confused on what she was doing. The woman was becoming weirder the more human she was becoming.
“What are you-“ Hongjoong went to ask but before he could finish his question, Haneul leaned over and pressed her hand against his chest. A warm feeling spreading across his chest.
Blush immediately covered his cheeks as he looked down for a second seeing her warm hand on his chest. Haneul used her other hand to push her hair behind her ear and hummed a bit. He looked over at the girl, blinking for a bit as she seemed too focused on her hand.
“What.” He said as he cleared his throat.
“Huh?” Haneul looked up and Hongjoong looked back at the road before her eyes could meet his.
“What are you doing?” He asked and Haneul shrugged. “Helping.”
His hand slowly moved going to meet her hand when all of the sudden, Haneul changed her hands. She pressed the ice cold water bottle she had against his chest. Hongjoong yelled out as the car swerved a bit, Haneul immediately pulled the water bottle back as her head hit the door.
“What was that for?” Haneul yelled and rubbed her head. Hongjoong shouted back. “What was that for?” He asked pointing to the water bottle.
Haneul answered. “It helps with anxiety, Yeonjun used to do that to me when I got anxiety attacks.” Her voice grew softer as she turned away from the man. “You said your chest hurt so I though that I would help you.”
Haneul placed her water bottle against her head where she had hit it against the door. Her mouth was turned up in a frown as she leaned as far away from him as she could. Hongjoong rolled his eyes but he gulped as his chest felt fine, sure his heart was racing but it wasn’t hurting anymore. He glared over at the woman, it was still unnecessary. The Demon leaned forward and turned on the radio filling the silence with whatever song was on at the time. Besides the soft song, the ride was silent. Every so often, Hongjoong heard a soft sniffle coming from where Haneul sat. He was glad when they finally pulled up to Haneul’s apartment building.
“We’re here.” He said coldly as he opened the door and slammed it shut.
Haneul scoffed as she watched the Demon walk away. “That asshole, I was helping.” Finally she got out of the car slamming the door as she chased after the man.
She was happy to be home, but rolled her eyes as she watched Hongjoong saunter around like he lived there as well. He threw his coat on the back of a chair as he fell on the couch.
“I’m gonna order takeout, what do you want?” He asked nonchalantly. Haneul scoffed and didn’t answer as she walked to the bathroom and slammed the door shut.
This was what Hongjoong was talking about, humans were too emotional and they were hard to read. Just a second ago she seemed so happy, happy enough to help and now Haneul was giving him the cold shoulder? If that’s how she wanted to play, then Hongjoong would happily play.
Haneul let out a groan as she leaned back against the door, she hated him. The woman ran her hands over her face and moved from the door, she plugged up the bathtub before turning on the water. Haneul sat on the edge of the tub moving her hand through the water as it filled up before turning off the water when she thought it was filled enough.
She stood up and peeled off her clothes as if she was getting rid of all the bad things that had happened throughout the day. The water seemed to wash away what was left of the sucky day, all the thoughts of the Dokkaebi and Hongjoong seemed to dissipate and rise up into the air like the steam from the bath. Slowly Haneul sunk lower and lower into the bath until her head was under water.
Outside, Hongjoong paced around the floor. He was too restless to watch tv for some reason and he couldn’t do anything else. Finally he sighed and made his way out onto the patio, he went to fish out his cigarette pack but shook his head and reached into his other pocket and pulled out his phone. he thumbed through his contacts before pressing on one and brought it up to his ear.
Hongjoong just sighed as he dropped his head. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”
A man’s voice answered the phone. “What’s up Hongjoong?” He sounded happy.
“I need you to look up someone for me.” Hongjoong answered, his friend hummed over on the other end. The Demon could hear as the man moved in his own house. “It’s for my friend.” Hongjoong added.
“Who is this person?”
“Choi Jongho, he was an official in the Joseon period.”
The man laughed. “Wah, you’re making me search up someone who died? Who is this for?”
“Can you do it or not?” Hongjoong hissed out making his friend laugh. “Okay, okay I understand.”
Hongjoong still didn’t fully understand why he was doing this but here he was helping some human.

“why isn’t there any fic about (x)?” there can be a fic that is precisely about what you want to read. just start writing that fic for yourself.
“but I’m not a writer” every writer has had their first time writing. most writers start with writing something they want to read. your work doesn’t have to be perfect, because having 1 fic that is precisely about what you want to read, even if it’s not perfect, is still better than having 0 fics about what you want to read.

The forrest got denser the more San drove down the gravel road. San kept on looking through the rearview mirror at Haneul and Hongjoong who sat in the back. San felt like a dad on a roadtrip with two teens in the back. Haneul was on her phone while the Demon was staring out of the window.
A hiss left Haneul’s lips as she tried searching up something else, Choi Jongho Joseon official but still nothing about the man from her memories came up. The woman was becoming increasingly annoyed, he had to be real. If he was in her memory he had to be real but it was almost like he never existed outside of her memory. Hongjoong sighed and rested his head on the headrest before his head lolled to the other side, staring at Haneul.
His eyes flickered down to her phone, he could just barely see what she was doing. “Whatcha searching up?”
Haneul hid her phone. “Nothing. Where are we going anyways?”
She put her phone down and looked out the window, the rain still pelting the earth but it had lightened up the second they had gotten out of the city.
“We’re almost there.” San answered. Haneul nodded and crossed her arms. “I would also like to be part of the loop. You know since I am the person you are helping.”
“We’re going to see one of my friends.” Hongjoong sighed and said. He mumbled the rest under his breath. “Man I haven’t seen him for a 100 years.”
A few minutes later, San’s car came to a stop. Haneul undid her seatbelt and looked at the two on what to do. Hongjoong opened the door and stepped out, and although it was still raining, it seemed just like another nice day for Hongjoong. He was dry as San opened up his umbrella to shield himself from the rain.
Hongjoong hurried around the side and opened up Haneul’s door before San could. He glared over at the werewolf as he help the woman from the car. San bared his teeth and Hongjoong gasped dramatically before just rolling his eyes.
“How about a nice walk through the forrest huh darling?” He asked smirking joking around.
San stepped forward and pulled Haneul under the umbrella with him. He just glared at the Demon. Haneul could sense the tension between the two.
“So.” She said and cleared her throat. “Where is your friend?”
Hongjoong pulled his eyes from San, he sighed and pointed over towards one of the sides where there was a small break between the thick treats. A path laid where he pointed.
“That’s the path but I don’t think dogs are allowed.” Hongjoong clicked his tongue staring right at San who let out a growl.
He let go of the umbrella and lunged at the Demon. He grabbed Hongjoong’s collar and growled into his face, not scared of what could happen.
“If you take her down that path and she doesn’t return, if you’re not already dead I will kill you myself.” San growled at the man, Hongjoong turned his face away and rolled his eyes.
His hands reached up and grabbed San’s hands pulling them off of his collar. He took a step back from San and dusted off his suit. Haneul leaned down and gave San his umbrella back before Hongjoong pulled her into his side. He placed his hand against her back.
He smiled. “Now why would you think I’d want to kill the only thing keeping me alive?” Haneul rolled her eyes and stepped from his side.
“I’ll be on the path when you’re ready.” Hongjoong sighed and walked away leaving San and Haneul alone.
Haneul smiled at San who sighed. He stared at the girl with a concern look. Hongjoong had changed from the years they used to party together. He got worse over the years and he hated that Haneul was stuck with him.
“You sure you’ll be okay?” He asked and the woman giggled, “I’ll be fine. Sure he’s a Demon and he’s cocky but I don’t think he could do any harm to me.”
San sighed but smiled. “Okay, be safe.”
Haneul stepped forward and hugged the werewolf, San held onto her tightly for a second before letting her go and watching as made her way over to Hongjoong. He turned as soon as she got close enough and started walking down the long path through the forrest. Haneul was confused on why she was dry when it was raining harshly but as she looked at Hongjoong, he also looked dry. It was him, he was using his powers but why? He was a Demon, they didn’t care about people so why did he care about her?
“Hongjoong! Wait up.” She called and the Demon stopped and waited for her. He didn’t say anything as they walked side by side until a smile crossed his face. “You know that was first time you called me by my name.”
“Don’t get used to it.” Haneul scoffed as they fell silent again.
He kept stealing glances at the woman. It was weird, he somehow felt drawn to her but he would never admit it. She was a stupid human and it was only because of that stupid deal she made.
“So how did a goddess like you lose her powers?” He broke the silence
Haneul corrected. “Not a goddess and it’s none of your business.”
“You must really hate the gods.” Hongjoong laughed and stopped in his tracks. Haneul also stopped and looked back at the Demon who pulled a pack from his pocket.
“What?” She asked as he placed a cigarette between his lips and pulled out a lighter.
He lit the end and took a drag, pointing at Haneul with the end. “You’ve corrected me every time I’ve called you a goddess.”
Haneul nodded and sighed. “Yeah well, the gods are kinda the reason this all started so sorry if I’m not jumping for joy when I’m being compared to them.”
The Demon laughed as he started walking again, the breeze picked up and the rain had lessened the deeper they walked. Haneul took a step from Hongjoong’s side not wanting to be in the way of his smoke.
“So which one did you piss off?” Hongjoong questioned.
“Hwasa.” She answered still a little embarrassed by what happened
Hongjoong just laughed and flicked his cigarette. “That makes sense, Hwasa is no joke.”
Haneul nodded and things went silent, she focused on the scenery. She watched as the tree swayed in the breeze and animals wandered through the trees, they didn’t seem scared of either Haneul or Hongjoong. every once in a while, the animals would stop and stare as if they were human before turning back and walking back into the forrest. Haneul smiled feeling a calmness wash over her. She always tried to do this, take a walk through nature without a real destination but it felt different now that Haneul was human. It felt like she could just breathe.
She looked up towards the sky, watching the blue sky and the moon that was still visible. Haneul started to think, about life, about the world, about everything. Did the stars ever worry about their supernovas? Did the planets ever look at the other celestial beings and wonder if they were good enough?
“I know how Pluto feels now.” Haneul laughed out sadly.
“What do mean?” He asked.
Haneul smiled as she answered. “Too small to be a planet but too planet-like to be an asteroid. Just like me, too human to be a goddess but not human enough to just be a normal woman.” A laugh came from her lips. “It a curse not being one or the other.”
“Why would you want to be one or the other. They both suck.” Hongjoong said making the girl laugh.
Haneul looked back at where they had come from but couldn’t see the end, she was sure that they hadn’t been walking for a long time. The forrest seemed to change the further they walked but not in a dark and creepy kind of way, it seemed to become brighter and feel more clam. The trees seemed playful and mischievous holding something hidden between the trees.
“So who is this friend of yours?” Hongjoong hummed before stamping out his cigarette. “He’s not a mortal if that’s what your asking, he is very particular about visitors though so there are a few rules. He hates when people are rude but don’t say thank you or else he thinks you owe him something. Make sure are careful around his garden, he really likes plants. Don’t take any gifts or food or drink from him and always be honest, he knows when people are lying and hates them.”
“Is your friend a Fae?” She laughed out and Hongjoong tilted his head. “That’s a word to explain him.”
Haneul laughed and shook her head, Hongjoong almost seemed bearable. her eyes looked down at the ground but when she heard Hongjoong stop, Haneul looked up and was met with the sight of a beautiful grotto. Her mouth fell open at the opening in the forrest. It was like nothing she had seen before, tall trees stretched to the sky and their multicolored leaves danced in the wind almost shimmering. Red, yellow, purple, blue flowers littered the ground and lined the edge of the trees. smack dab in the middle of the clearing sat a small cottage, it’s white walls stood out from all the color surrounding it but the ivy that snaked down the sides made it seem magical. The tall brick chimney puffed out little wisps of smoke almost cartoonishly. It was a perfect place for a fairy to live.
The gardens around the house were impeccable and the path winded perfectly through the flowers and behind the house. Haneul went to take a step forward but felt a hand press against her stomach pushing her back before she could step onto the grass.
“Follow my lead and be careful of the fauna.” Hongjoong said before taking a step onto the path. Haneul watched the Demon and stepped directly behind him trying to stay in the middle and away from the flowers.
There was a small noise coming from somewhere, almost like a bell ringing somewhere. Her eyes tried to search around for the noise, her eyebrows furrowed together as the flowers seemed to move and small faces poked through the grass. They were small, only about a couple inches tall but they looked human-like. Haneul looked up and saw Hongjoong a couple feet away from her, the woman looked back down but those things were gone. She sped walked up to where the Demon was, her mouth fell open once again. The backyard was even more lush and breathtaking, Haneul was speechless.
There were two fruit trees in a small circle that wasn’t filled with flours, unusual red and purple fruits that almost looked like berries hung from the branches. Connecting the two tree was a hammock that swung slowly from the nonexistent wind and laying on top of the hammock was a man. He looked peaceful as he slept or was laying there. Hongjoong brought his hands up to cup his mouth.
“How are you on this fine day Yeosang?” The man reacted to Hongjoong’s words. His eyes fluttered open as he turned to look over at the Demon, his eyes sparkled in the sunlight looking like the stars and his mouth broke into a toothy grin.
The Face sat up and waved over to his friend, Haneul froze seeing the man. He was the most picturesque person she had ever seen. His skin was smooth and looked naturally glowing, his eyes were bigger and brighter than the sun itself. Right under his left eye was a mark no bigger than her thumb. It was the spot of the Fan, where the Earth had kissed them.
“My dear friend, what brings you to my humble home?” He asked as he walked up to the Demon.
“Yeosang, it is so good to see you.” The two embraced, Haneul was frozen until the Fae spoke again looking upon the woman. “May I have you’re name?”
Haneul opened her mouth before catching herself, she smile up at him and answer. “You may call me Haneul.” Yeosang’s eyebrows raised, he had misjudged the woman.
He smiled and held out his hand, Haneul took his hand shaking the Fae’s hand with a smile. He clicked his tongue and looked between the two.
“How was the walk here? I hope the sprites weren’t too bothersome, they aren’t too fond of guests.” Yeosang explained and the two shook their head. “It was peaceful but I haven’t seen the sprites, I hope we haven’t scared them off.”
“No they’re shy, you might hear them once in a while.” Yeosang laughed before he pointed to the two. “To what do I owe this visit?”
Yeosang had an unusual way of speaking, Haneul had been round for long but he sounded even older than she was. Then again, he was hidden deep within a forrest. Hongjoong nodded and let out an ‘ah’ as he moved closer to Haneul, he smiled and placed his hand on the small of her back. She gasped at the feeling and shot a look at the Demon.
“My friend here needs your help with something.” Hongjoong motioned with his other hand. Yeosang gave a cautious looked at the woman before back at the Demon before letting out a hum.
“Won’t you join me inside?” He asked politely and stepped to the side motioning to his house. ‘I would like to properly treat my guest.”
Haneul looked between the two, she gulped. She didn’t really trust both of them but she trusted Hongjoong more, at least he couldn’t kill her. If he wanted to do something, he had the entire walk here and also Haneul had the comforting though of San waiting back at the car. Hongjoong nudged her a bit stepping closer to her.
“Tha-“ Haneul cleared her throat playing it off as if she wasn’t about to say thank you. “I’d appreciate that.”
Yeosang nodded and turned starting towards his front porch, as soon as the Fae wasn’t watching Haneul sent her elbow into Hongjoong’s stomach. He groaned as he doubled over, Haneul walked away following the fairy. Hongjoong growled glaring up at the woman, he pushed back up and walked after the two.
“I love your house, looks so quaint and cozy.” Haneul said as they reached the front door. Yeosang smiled and blushed. “Thank you, I quite enjoy my life here.”
“Yeah I’m jealous.” Hongjoong joined their conversation and pulled Haneul back into him. “A life without any humans.”
Haneul faked a laugh and she hit his chest harshly. “Yeah it would be nice to live alone wouldn’t it?”
The two laughed before Haneul pushed him away and motioned to the door. “Why don’t we go inside.”
Yeosang nodded and opened the door walking in, Haneul’s eyes went wide seeing the door. Instead of peering into the house, a hazy dreamlike fog floated in the doorway, it was so thick that you couldn’t see anything inside. Haneul took a step forward but Hongjoong pulled her back.
“What?” Haneul hissed out pulling her wrist from his grip. Hongjoong sighed and handed her a gift. “Remember what I told you. I needed to bring this to him anyway but I think it’ll help you.”
Haneul took the gift from his hands and sighed. “What is this? why are you being so nice?”
“It’s nothing personal, I’m stuck with you that’s why.” Hongjoong answered. “Now go in, he doesn’t like waiting.”
Haneul stepped through the fog and when she blinked, she was inside a house. It was quaint and cute, just a big bigger than her apartment and looked exactly how she imagined. Yeosang moved through the rooms flicking his hands and things moved, the lights turned one with one flick of his hands.
“Please make yourself at home.” He called over to Haneul
The woman moved slowly and cautiously through the house, remembering what Hongjoong had told her. She tried to touch nothing as she walked into the small old-fashioned kitchen, she smiled at the icebox that was there instead of a fridge. Haneul went to pull out a seat but it moved on its own, Haneul slowly sat down at the table and placed the box on the table.
The woman smoothed out her shirt trying to make herself presentable, she had learned somethings from the gods. If you wanted help from them, you had to act as if they were royalty. No slouching, be confident but not overly confident, and be careful with your words.
“What are you?” Yeosang’s voice boomed as he walked around the table and sat across from the woman. “I don’t understand?”
“You look like a human but you act like a goddess. The only humans Hongjoong hangs around are those from the brothels and the gods aren’t very fond of him so I’m very confused on why Hongjoong has taken a liking to you?”
He talked like some of the old men Haneul knew and she tried her best not to laugh. Had he really been asleep for a 100 years? That would explain his unusual vernacular that made him sound like he was from the turn of the century.
“Can I ask you a question?” Haneul leaned forward. “How long have you been here?”
Yeosang hummed as he thought about it, his eyebrows furrowed together and he tapped his fingers on the table. “Well, Hongjoong asked to go get drinks to start off the new century, we got drunk and I said I was gonna take a nap, so I’m not exactly sure.”
She chuckled. “Hongjoong was right, it’s been over a 100 years.”
“A 100 years, no that can’t be.” Yeosang swatted his hand at the woman. “It’s true, that’s crazy.”
She pulled out her phone and slid it over to the man, his eyes went wide. “It’s like magic.” He said staring at the little black box.
The two giggled as they continued to talk. Haneul asked about his life and the Fate asked about the modern world.
“You know Haneul, you’re the first person I’ve talked to that truly understands me.” Yeosang complemented the woman. He leaned back in his seat and changed the subject. “So are you and Hongjoong-“
He waited for Haneul’s answer to gauge his reaction. Haneul scoffed and shook her head.
“Me and that Demon? god no, I can barely stand him. The only reason I deal with him is cause I have to?” Haneul leaned back in her seat and crossed her arms. “I made a deal with him to help me get my powers back and I’m regretting it.”
“Ah.” Yeosang laughed. “So that’s who he brought to me, a fallen angel.”
“A fallen angel?”
Haneul watched as the Fae lifted his hand up, opening his palm towards the sky as twigs snaked up his arm and twisted into the shape of a stick figure on his hand.
“There are people who are just like angels, they live in what they believe is the perfect world. They have everything they want and live the perfect life. Those people also fall just like those angels, and find that the world isn’t as perfect as they thought.”
Yeosang tipped his hand and the stick person tumbled forward and off of the Fae’s hand. it fell from the height and disappeared past the table where Haneul was unable to see it anymore. Slowly, Yeosang brought his hand down to the table and put two of his fingertips on the table ‘walking’ his hand towards Haneul. She gulped unsure if it was directed at her.
“And then those people come crawling back to Hongjoong and I.” She didn’t like his tone. It felt like a threat or like he made up his mind not to help her out.
She shifted in her seat and cleared her throat. Maybe now it was a good time to give Hongjoong’s gift to him. She pushed the box closer to the Fae. Yeosang’s eyes left Haneul and looked at the gift with confusion. His eyebrows knitted together to ask, ‘what is this?’
“It’s a gift from Hongjoong.” Haneul said cautiously with a smile. The Fae moved slowly as he pulled the present closer to him.
He grabbed the end of the ribbon and untied the bow. Haneul was curious on what Hongjoong had gotten Yeosang. What present did a Demon get for a Fae? Yeosang gasped as he pulled the top off. Haneul watched as he pulled a glass dome from the box, his eyes went wide as a smile crossed his face.
It was just a glass dome full of dirt? But as Haneul looked closer, she saw little wiggling green things moving across the ground. Haneul didn’t even notice that she stood up as well. Yeosang tapped on the glass and the little green tentacles started to wiggle faster.
“What is that?” Haneul asked.
He didn’t answer and just moved away from the table, Haneul was just a step behind him as they walked into the living room. Yeosang’s eyes were locked on the glass dome but he moved gracefully through the house until he reached a shelf that also held glass domes that had other colorful objects in them. Some of them moved in an orderly manner, and almost like an animal or human.
“Terrariums. These pieces of nature will outlive most of the world.” Yeosang moved to the other ones, he sounded a bit distracted.
“But there are things moving inside?”
“That’s what makes them so special. They’re enchanted. Hongjoong knows that I’ve been trying to save parts of the magical world that has been dying out. These terrariums are the last of these mythical places.”
“They’re beautiful.” Haneul breathed out looking back at them.
She had never seen it like that, these small globes would be here long after the actual place had disappeared. Haneul reached her hand out and pressed her hand against the side, the little wiggling objects seemed to notice. They wiggled over to where her hand was and investigated, she giggled at the actions. they seemed to calm when Haneul had her hand against the glass.
“What is it you need?” Yeosang asked. Haneul pulled her hand back and looked over at the Fae. “There’s a reason Hongjoong sent you in with the present, he never turns down an invite.”
“I need to get my powers back before the full moon.” Haneul answered. Yeosang nodded, it all made sense now.
“And so he thought I could help.”
She blurted out. “Can you!”
“Eager aren’t you.” He tisked the girl before sighing. “But unfortunately you won’t get much from me.”
“What do you mean?’
“My powers are tied to these woods. I’m afraid I can’t do much for you besides bestowing my protection upon you.”
Haneul let out a sigh, clenching her hands. This was how Hongjoong was getting back at her, he couldn’t kill the woman but he could fuck with her. Haneul took back about what she said earlier about the Demon, he wasn’t bearable. He was an asshole.
“But, we Fae are close with those of another legend, I know of a Dokkaebi who can help.” Haneul smiled. “Please I could take any help that I can get.”
He nodded and they started walking back to the front door. Yeosang looked back at the woman, he enjoyed her company.
“I will give you my help if you grant me a favor in return.” Yeosang cocked his eyebrow. Haneul hesitated for a second before answering. “Of course.”
Yeosang lifted up his pinky and Haneul wrapped her pinky around his. As long as she could get the help she needed, Haneul didn’t care who she had to see. Fae, Dokkaebi, Werewolf, Demon, who knew what else Haneul would meet next.

The elevator dinged and Haneul stomped off onto her floor. She was annoyed with San right now. She had asked what the plan was now that they had the Demon but he answered with a shrug and a I don’t know.
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know? You said you had a plan!”
“Yeah for Hongjoong but it’s up to you to find your powers. I’m just your bodyguard.”
“So I’m now stuck with the Demon?”
Haneul couldn’t believe it, the only reason she agreed was because she thought San had a plan. She didn’t want to be stuck with a Demon for almost a month. Haneul was a powerless dying god relying on the help of a Demon, oh how the mighty had fallen. She wanted her last days to be nice but it seemed like she wasn’t getting her wish.
The woman mumbled out as she dug through her purse for the keys to her apartment. If she had her powers, Haneul could’ve wished for them but now she was a stupid human. all of the sudden, the door swung open as if someone had pulled it open. She took a cautious step into her apartment looking around to see if anything had been taken. Haneul let out a sigh as she saw that everything was there.
“Welcome home darling.” A deep voice said in her ear. Haneul jumped as she saw the Demon behind her. “Fucking hell, you scared me.”
Haneul moved as she pulled her coat off and hung it up on the coatrack and kicked off her shoes. She let out a sigh and walked into a kitchen getting herself some water so her hangover wasn’t horrible tomorrow.
“What are you doing here?” Haneul hissed out at the Demon. Hongjoong laughed and pressed his hand against his chest. “Don’t act like you hate me darling. Let me remind you that you were the one who initiated the deal.”
He walked back up to her standing right behind the woman so that his chest was touching her back. Haneul jammed her foot on his making him take a step back as he groaned out in pain.
“A deal that is increasingly becoming more stupid.” Haneul replied and sat on the couch. Hongjoong followed the girl and stood behind the couch.
“I’m not happy about the situation either but we’re stuck together until I get your powers back.”
“You.” Haneul scoffed. “I’m getting my powers back.”
The Demon laughed, flashing his usual smirk. He put his hand on his stomach as he walked around the couch and sat next to the woman.
“With the fact that you made a deal with me to help you get your powers back, I would like to see you try.”
Haneul scooted as far away from the Demon as she could, her eyes glared over at him. She was confused on why he was still here, sure she was stuck with him but that didn’t mean she wanted to spend every second with him.
“Why are you still here?” Haneul asked and Hongjoong looked back at her confusedly. ‘I’m getting comfy. You know it’s getting pretty late.”
Haneul jumped upas Hongjoong checked his watch, the woman grabbed his hand and pulled him off the couch. “Absolutely not, you are not staying here. Don’t you have some lives to go ruin?”
“Ouch.” Hongjoong placed his hand back over his heart as Haneul used her entire body to push him to the door. “Is that seriously all you think of me? I’m hurt.”
Haneul stopped and walked around him to open the door, at that moment Hongjoong leaned forward caging her against the door. He watched as the woman blushed. Haneul stood there frozen as her cheeks heated up from embarrassment or from the proximity. Haneul didn’t know but she wanted it to stop.
“I’m a very sweet guy when you get to know me and I can make the nights less lonely.” Hongjoong purred out into her ear. Haneul was pulled from her frozen state.
She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. She scoffed, that was Demons for you. They were all sex pests, that’s where their power came from and would do anything to get into someone’s pants. These sweet words weren’t sweet at all.
“Don’t bother flattering me. It won’t work.” She hissed out pushing him back before pulling the door open. “Good night and get out.”
She smiled as she pushed him out, slamming the door in his face. Haneul sighed, now she could finally relax. She turned around and almost screamed as she saw Hongjoong standing in the middle of her apartment.
“That’s not how you treat guests.” Hongjoong pouted and Haneul rolled her eyes. “Okay fine, you can stay but only for tonight.”
He smiled at her and gave a small mocking bow. “You’re too kind.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Haneul rolled her eyes and walked around him into her room.
She watched the Demon out of the corner of her eyes. He walked up to the couch and sat down. Haneul searched through her dresser and grabbed her pajamas. She made her way to the bathroom and started changing. Her mind went back to the dream trying to find any meaning in it. Haneul searched her memory for another mention of a Jongho or a Yong-sun but there was nothing. She hadn’t granted a wish for them nor had she ever talked to them. Hanuel had only been friends with those who were non-mortal, refusing to make friends with those she granted wishes for. She did not want to watch them die and those two from her dreams were definitely not gods. They spoke too much like humans and Haneul had called Jongho ‘young master’. Haneul had never referred to anyone as a title.
She opened the door to the bathroom and walked back out, her eyes saw Hongjoong as he was walking around inspecting her apartment. Haneul’s hair on the back of her neck stood up, she hate this already and it had only been a couple minutes.
“Do you have a plan?” Hongjoong asked as Haneul walked from the bathroom. “Yeah I’m gonna go to sleep then figure out everything tomorrow.”
He hummed out before hold his hand out like a gun. “Don’t worry my lady, I protect you.”
Haneul immediately shook her head and rolled her eyes. “We’re not starting with that.”
“Oh come on, have a little fun Haneul.”
“Good night Hongjoong!” Haneul walked into her room and shut the glass door. She rolled her eyes as she could still see him walking around outside of he room through the frosted glass.
••••
Haneul sat on her knees, leaning down as she blew on the fire trying to keep it alive. She was cooking some food for her and her father, she settled another bowl to the side before ladling some Into two bowls. The door opened and she watched as her father hobbled out leaning more on his cain than other days. It hurt her heart and reminded her of how old he was.
“Dad.” She called. “I made us breakfast. It’s your favorite.”
She held up one of the filled bowls as her father smiled and sat down next to her. He groaned as he leaned his cain against a support. Haneul put a spoon in the bowl before he took it from her hands. He hummed at the warmth before bringing the spoon to his mouth and slurped it up.
‘Mmmh Haneul you make the best Juk.” He said through a mouthful of the porridge. Haneul laughed. “I learned it from the best. How are you feeling today dad?”
“Old.” He groaned out. “Like one of my feet is in the grave.”
He wiggled one of his feet, the same on that troubled him. Haneul chuckled before tilting her head before grabbing a cup. “And that’s why the physician told you to drink a cup of herbal tea a day.”
He hummed and took the cup. “What would I do without you.”
“This house would be in ruins.” Haneul answered and placed a kiss against his temple.
She got up and grabbed the other bowl, she stepped around her father but he grabbed the end of her dress. He shook his head and sipped on his tea.
“Let her rest.” He said and Haneul’s smile faded. She nodded and sat down next to her father. “She’s finally resting.”
“She hasn’t eaten much though. I’m worried.” Haneul said softly.
It went silent between them. Haneul played with the food she held, the pain was too much to talk about. They knew the sorrow the other one held. Haneul held more than her father. Her eyes looked over at her father as he scooped more of the porridge into his mouth. Haneul couldn’t just sit here, not when it was this bad.
“We could call the physician, there’s got to be some elixir that will cure her.” Haneul’s voice came out more angry than she wanted. She begged her father not wanting to believe it but her father had come to terms with it years ago.
He shook his head calmly, “there’s nothing more we can do.”
“What about the Yangban or the officials. There’s gotta be someone who can help her.” Her sentence Wass cut off the her father slammed his empty bowl against the ground.
Haneul’s eyes looked down at the bowl, she didn’t dare look up at her father when he was like this. His mood went sour easily and Haneul hated having to deal with it when everything else seemed to be going wrong. He looked upon his daughter with anger, she was asking too many questions and stupid ones as well. He had taught her better than that.”
“We’ve tried everyone we could Haneul! I even had the shaman bless her. the gods who have to decide for her ate.” He hissed out before grabbing his cane and standing up. Haneul watched as her father wobbled out of their yard leaning more on his cane.
Haneul was left by herself holding a bowl, but it wasn’t for her. The girl took a breath and stood up walking over to the door. She forced a smile onto her face as she slowly open the door. Everything would be fine when Haneul married Jongho, she knew it. they would all get better.
••••
Jongho, there was that name again. Haneul opened her eyes, laying in her bed as her arm hung off the side. She didn’t want to move or do anything, slowly she grabbed her phone and looked at the time. 8:30, Haneul had never slept in this late. The woman let go of her phone and let it clatter against the ground as she rubbed her head. She had another dream but this one was different. The man from her last dream hadn’t been there but she talked of a woman who she cared about deeply.
In her dream she talked of a physician and the an, her father, talked of a shaman. Whoever this woman was, she was very sick. Sick enough that they brought a shaman to bless her. Haneul groaned and pushed her self out of her bed, she needed to get up now or she wouldn’t get up at all. Haneul walked out of her room and searched her apartment but the Demon was nowhere to be found. She let out a sigh and smiled and walked up to the table where a cup of coffee sat.
She sat down and went to take a sip of the coffee, that’s when she saw the letter in front of it. She hissed and rolled her eyes, she placed her coffee down and picked up the letter. What was it now? Haneul let out an exasperated sigh as she saw it was from Hongjoong and not San.
I went out to “ruin people’s lives” I’ll be back later but if you need me, I’m sure you know where to find me. Sorry I can’t be there to protect you. Love, Hongjoong.
She scoffed at the note and crushed it in her hand. He was mocking her with the ruining people’s lives and the protection part. Not to mention the sign off but Haneul was glad that he was gone. She left her coffee on the table and totally forgot about it as she rushed to get dressed.
Haneul hated that she had to do everything manually. All she wanted was to snap her fingers and be done with everything. She stood at her dresser trying to figure out what she was wearing today. Haneul always just went off what she felt and snapped her figures but now that she had to chose what she wanted to wear, it felt harder.
After she got dressed, Haneul headed towards the cafe. On the way there, the city seemed barren. The sky was dark and gray as there was a rumbling from over the horizon. People walked the streets with umbrellas and thicker jackets. Haneul felt unprepared for the weather today as she held her tiny coat against her body. She rushed to the cafe as the wind picked up, thick raindrops started to fall from the sky as she made it to the front door. She hadn’t seen a storm like this in a while.
San was wiping down a table as Haneul pulled the door closed. She shivered a bit and rubbed her hands together. The dogs barked and whimpered, Haneul knew it was at the weather. They knew something wasn’t right and San shook his head, clicking his tongue.
“What’s going on out there?” Haneul asked as she walked further into the cafe. San shook his head and walked up to the door flipping the open sign so it said close.
The hair on his neck stood up as he looked up at the gray sky. It had just been a light sprinkle a few minutes ago but now it was a heavy downpour. His stomach churned at the storm.
“This isn’t a usual rainstorm.” San explained. “This is caused by the gods.”
Haneul gulped, as she looked out the window. He was right, Haneul could feel it. This didn’t feel like a normal day and lately, everything had been feeling strange. Her dreams, Haneul felt like she was being watched, and now this weather? The woman didn’t know what she did to anger the gods but it felt very targeted.
“Yeah, things have been strange lately.” Haneul answered and moved away from the window.
The dogs whimpered in their cages, barking. Haneul moved towards the cages and tried to comfort the dogs. She felt bad for the animals. She cooed to them, San looked up from making a drink. A small smile flickered on his lips as he watched Haneul. He shook his head and focused back on his drink.
“I’ve been having weird dreams.” Haneul said, San furrowed his eyebrows. “Dreams?” He asked.
Haneul nodded. “Since that night I met you, I’ve been having these weird dreams.”
“What are they about?” He asked as he walked up to the woman. He nudged her a bit and handed her a cup.
Haneul took a sip of the coffee as she furrowed her eyebrows. She remembered Jongho and how it felt like she was there. She could remember the taste of the Juk she had made and she remember the worry that she could feel when she talked to the man who said he was her father.
“I was in a Joseon or Goryeo era village and I really felt like I was there. They called me by my name and it all felt so real.” She tried to explain but it was coming out all jumbled.
San nodded as he moved to do some other chore, he didn’t answer and Haneul became embarrassed. They were just dreams, Haneul didn’t know why she was bothering him with stupid things.
“Sorry, they’re just dreams so of course they sound stupid.” Haneul tried to play it off but San spoke confirming her suspicion. “They’re memories.”
‘Memories?” She asked looking at San.
“Memories of your life.”
Haneul walked over to a table and sat down. A few seconds later, San sat down across from her. Memories? No they couldn’t be, why would she only remember these people now?
“I’m sure I would remember these memories.”
“You’re human now, you’re regaining your human memories.” He answered.
Her human memories? A smile flickered on her lips, she hoped the San was right. So those people she saw were her friends and family? Then who was Jongho? If he was someone from her past, Haneul wanted to know who he was.
“Who are you Jongho.” Haneul said under her breath.
The bell on the door jingled and Haneul looked over rolling her eyes as she saw Hongjoong. He shook out his umbrella and walked in.
“Wow San I like the redecoration.” Hongjoong said and San rolled his eyes. “Don’t have to be a smartass, Hongjoong.”
He smiled as he saw Haneul. “So I guess this was the friend you were waiting for, darling?”
“What about it lover boy?” She hissed back out as she sipped on the coffee. He pouted. “I left you some coffee today. You chose him over me?”
“You jealous?” Haneul mocked the Demon and San laughed. Hongjoong laughed and pointed the end of his umbrella at the Werewolf. “Me jealous of a slobbering dog? Yeah right.”
“A slobbering dog? You know who helped you off your feet?” Just then as San and Hongjoong started arguing the sound of thunder rumbled through the city shutting them up.
San and Hongjoong stared outside. Haneul whimpered at the loud noise, the Demon just smiled. San shook his head, he had only seen one storm as bad as this and he never wanted to see one like it again. It had happened over a hundred years ago but the wrath of the gods were still fresh in his minds.
Hongjoong hissed. “Ah Yeosang, always the mediator.” He looked over at Haneul. “I think I might have someone who can help.”
Haneul gulped at Hongjoong’s words. She wasn’t sure if she trusted the Demon and especially when she watched Hongjoong and San share a look.
“You think he’s awake?”
Hongjoong nodded towards the outside. “It’s either him or the gods fighting.”
San nodded and Haneul gulped. She didn’t like this plan at all.

There were many assumptions you could make about the world, or life and fate. The word worked in many mysterious ways, and so did the gods. Haneul was just happy that the gods had granted today to be a good day. Haneul could just feel it as she rolled out of her yo today, her heart raced with the beginning of the new day. The young woman hummed as she rolled up the bedding before getting dressed in her usual hanbok. She closed the door to her room and walked out into the yard of her hanok.
The village was already up and staring their day. Haneul heard the sound of the cattle and people at work. Outside of the fence, the world moved on but inside, it was quiet and calm. as she moved, her eye caught the sight of a door. Her heart hung in her chest and she stopped, she wanted to move up to it but didn’t dare walk up to it. Haneul shook her head, she had work to do anyways.
She walked over to the shed and picked up the bucket she used to carry water from the river back to her house. She walked up to the gate and closed it behind her as she started down the street. Children ran down the dusty path laughing as they played, it brought a smile to her face. Haneul waved to some of the women as they also hurried off to do chores.
“Good morning Haneul.” A lady called to the girl. She smiled and waved back to the woman. “Good morning Mrs. Ahn.”
She continued forward hearing the older woman call. “Where are you heading off to so early in the morning?”
“Off to the river for water.” Haneul answered turning around still smiling.
“Aigoo, such a hard worker. Your parents must be so proud.” Haneul laughed at her words before bowing. “Thank you Mrs. Ahn. Have a good day.”
The smile on her face was huge from the small little talk she just had. The village was nothing special but to Haneul, it was her everything. It was all that she knew, she had been born and raised here, the same with her parents. This was her everything but inside the walls of her hank, that was her world. She was the leader of the house, that’s what she ran even when her father was there. She took care of almost everything, she cooked and cleaned, she got the firewood for food and water for washing and made sure that her father had everything he needed.
The river was insight, Haneul picked up her pace. She hurried to the bank and sat down on her knees. It looked clearer than most days as she dipped her bucket into the cold water. She hummed as she did before hearing someone call her name.
“Haneul!” A girls voice called out, Haneul looked to see. A smile crossed her face as she saw Yong-sun waving towards her.
She giggled as her friend grabbed her dress and made her way down the rocks, trying not to stumble. As she got closer to Haneul, she pulled her had up to her mouth and laughed. Yong-sun let out a squeal as she tripped and ran into Haneul, bumping the bucket out of her hands.
Haneul gasped and whipped her head around, she watched as her bucket floated downstream. “Oh no!” She said and stood up.
Haneul grabbed onto her hanbok as she hurried along the bank. Yong-sun was right behind her as the two chased after the bucket, it bobbed along the waves getting pushed faster down the river. Haneul let out a sigh and stoped, she watched it float away until someone reached out and grabbed the bucket pulling it from the water. The man stood up and looked around for the owner, his eyes met Haneul’s and her heart almost stopped.
He looked over at Haneul, a hint of excitement hidden behind his stern expression. He slowly walked forward, stepping out of the river. Water dripped from his beautiful blue danryeong as Haneul met him halfway. Her eyes fell onto the floor as they stopped in front of each other, she wanted to but she couldn’t. He was the son of one of the officials living in their small village. She knew him well, Choi Jongho. They had grown up together.
“Good morning Young Master.” She bowed to him, he tilted his head as he smiled. “It is a lovely morning.”
Haneul took a peak as he looked up at the sky and the surroundings before pushing the bucket closer to Haneul. “I believe you lost this.”
“Thank you Young Master.” She smiled and looked at the bucket. Her eyebrows furrowed as she saw his dripping wet sleeves. Haneul gasped. “You’re sleeves!”
Haneul took the bucket and gave it to Yong-sun who stood behind her before using her hanbok to dry his sleeves. “You shouldn’t have Young Mater. It dangerous for someone like you.”
Jongho’s face turned stern again as he hissed out at the girl, he pulled his arm away from Haneul. “You’re right, it is dangerous. Who knows, if you had fallen in, I might’ve had to jump in to save you.”
Haneul gulped as she met his eyes. Her cheeks heated up in embarrassment. She never liked to be scolded but Jongho’s face then changed, his expression broke into a smile as he giggled. Haneul followed after him, laughing with the man. Her eyes were locked in his and it seemed like everything faded away around the two.
••••
She jumped from her bed in a cold sweat, panting as her eyes searched her room. Haneul’s mind was reeling from what just happened. Slowly she brought her hand up to her forehead trying to calm herself. Her whole hurt, her head pounded and her stomach twisted as if she had just run a marathon. Haneul put her hand against her stomach as it continued to twist and before she knew it, she was in the bathroom puking out her guts. Tears pricked at her eyes as she finally collapsed next to the toilet.
The nectar had hit her hard, she had never felt like this before. Her whole body felt like it had been run over by a train. She thought back to the dream as she came down, trying to remember everything about it. Haneul was sure she wouldn’t forget, it felt so real. She could feel the breeze on her face, the cold water on her hands, and her heart pounding when she was in front of the man who’s name was Jongho. Haneul didn’t know how she knew but she just did.
Her stomach had settled enough for Haneul to stand up. She flushed the toilet and walked from the bathroom, looking down she realized that she was still in her clothes from last night and that’s when it all came rushing back to her. The bet, the walk home, San…his words.
“You’re dying as we speak.” His words swirled in her head. She hissed as she crashed into a seat.
The same lonely feeling filled her body and all she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cry. Haneul tilted looking down at her knee, she was sure that she had skinned it last night but there was no mark there. Haneul groaned as he head continued to pound, she wasn’t sure if this was from the nectar or if it was a withdrawal symptom of being human. Yes! That’s what was happening. Her body was shutting down. Her brain couldn’t deal with the overload of information, humans didn’t live for over a 1,000 years. Her body was trying to compensate for her new form and so it was jumbling up her information.
It was putting memories into dreams and giving her headaches because of all the information crammed into her brain. It would take her some time to become normal, or that’s what sh though until she realized. Haneul didn’t have time t become normal, she only had until the next full moon which was in…28 days, 12 hours, and 47 minutes. That was barely a month to get her powers back.
“Oh what am I gonna do?” She ran her hands through her hair until she looked up and saw the discarded ball of meat sitting across form her. Her stomach twisted again and she thought about San.
She gasped, yes San. He’d know what to do, quickly she got up and threw away the meat before searching for the card that San had given her. She picked it up and searched for information. It was a cafe not far from here, and actually Haneul had passed by it several times. She had no time to waste and so the woman jumped up and ran out of her room.
Haneul rushed to the elevator and made it just in time before it closed. The woman apologized as she almost ran into someone, her eyes scanned the cramped elevator and hissed when she didn’t see Dalnim. Haneul was hoping that she could ask the goddess for her help. A few minutes later, the doors slid open and Haneul was out of the building and on the street as soon as possible. Her hand held tightly onto the card.
People glared at her as she ran pass them, almost running into several people. She didn’t care, she needed to get to San now. Her eyes scanned the shops looking for the one from the card. She came to a screeching halt as she saw it, the woman panted as she looked down at the card. It was the right place, Haneul smiled as she crossed the street. A laugh escaped her lips, it was a cafe but not just any cafe, it was a dog cafe. She pushed open the door, it dinged and the sound of barking filled the room.
She also heard the sound of paws as a pack of dogs ran up to her. She squatted down and was almost knocked down by the force of the dogs. Haneul giggled as she ran her hands up and down the dogs, they surrounded her and tried to lick her face. They were excited to be getting attention from someone.
“Ya.” San yelled out before whistling. The dogs looked up and ran back to the man, he pointed over to gate. “Into the back!”
Haneul stood up as she saw San, he looked annoyed as he closed the gate after the last dog. That’s when she remembered why she was here. San walked up to her, looking her up and down. She wiped away all the dirt and dog hair on her clothes.
“Do you want a coffee?” He asked and Haneul nodded. “Yes please.”
He nodded before pointing to a table. “You can go sit over there, I’ll bring it when it’s done.”
“Okay.” Haneul said and walked over, she pulled the seat out and slowly sat down. Her eyes watched as San walked behind the counter. He focused on the task in front of him letting Haneul look around.
It was pretty and super colorful, in one of the corners a basket full of dog toys and another second behind a gate where the dogs were playing. She giggled as she watched them wrestle as they wagged their tails. They looked so happy as they played until the got tired and cuddled with each other or groomed one of their kin.
“Here you go.” San placed the cup of coffee in front of her before sliding into the seat across from her. “I see you didn’t care enough to change your clothes.” He scoffed and Haneul pulled her coat over her clothes.
She nodded her head over to the playpen. “Are they your family, is that why you told me to meet you here?”
San bit his cheek before nodding. “Yeah, that husky is my first cousin Ha-na. That one over there is my brother, and those two older ones in the back are my parents.”
“Really?” She asked but San stared at her with a deadpan expression. “No” he answered monotone.
Haneul cleared her throat as she shifted in her seat. “So um, how are we gonna get my power back?”
San shook his head. “That’s your job, my job is to protect you.”
“You’re not gonna help me?” Haneul scoffed.
“I am helping you…by protecting you.” San answered and Haneul crossed her arms. “Protect me, from what?”
“The gods, other mythical creatures. You angered Jowangshin, who knows what other god or mythical creature is mad at you.” San lectured the now human woman. “You’re mortal now, you cannot deal with this on your own.”
Haneul looked away from his sharp gaze. She picked up the cup and blew the hot liquid before taking a sip. She cussed as she fanned her tongue. Her eyes looked up and San tilting his head as if he was saying ‘I told you so.’ Haneul cleared her throat and put the cup down.
She sighed. “Okay then how am I supposed to find my powers. It isn’t like I lose them every week.”
“I know a guy who can help.” San pulled something from his pocket.
He placed a photo in front of the girl. Haneul looked down at the photo seeing a man in the grainy blown-up photo. it seemed to be a party, his arms around two girls as a man she recognized stood next to them. Haneul giggled seeing San standing close to them awkwardly. The man in the middle had a devilish smile on his face reminding her of Hwasa. Haneul cocked her eyebrow as she looked back up at the werewolf.
“His name is Hongjoong and he has certain abilities that can help you.” San explained. Haneul joked a bit trying to gain a bit more info about this man. “And what is he? Another werewolf?”
“He’s a Demon.” Haneul laughed and sat back in her seat. San furrowed his eyebrows as she said. “You’re funny. No I don’t work with Demons. Not anymore.”
She pushed the photo back towards him shaking her head. San rolled his eyes before cocking his eyebrow.
••••
How did Haneul find herself here, pushing through the crowd of people as she could barely hear her thoughts over the blaring music. She clenched her jaw as she remembered why she was here, it was cause she was looking for a good-for-nothing Demon. She didn’t work with Demons, and so she didn’t know how she got wrapped up in this.
She hated them so much, they were the spawn of hell (literally) and they were as bad as gods but at least they were truthful. They went around preying on the innocent and forcing them to make deals that never well but San had a plan and all Haneul could do was trust him. So here she was, pushing through a crowd of drunk girls.
Her eyes looked down at the grainy picture of this Demon before trying to find him, she sighed spotting him in the middle of a dance floor grinding up against some poor girl. Haneul rolled her eyes and the thought of leaving crossed her mind. She watched as the girl Hongjoong was with turned around, they talked for a second before nodding. Haneul turned to the bar and ordered a drink, telling the bartender to make her anything. Haneul watched Hongjoong out of the corner of her eye as he started to walk towards the bar.
“Keep the change.” She told the bartender before making her way up to Hongjoong trying to look like it was intentional. Once she reached him, she tuned and ‘accidentally’ spilled her drink over him.
Haneul gasped and covered her mouth. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to do that. I wasn’t looking.”
He smiled his million dollar smile at Haneul. “Don’t worry darling, accidents happen.” Hongjoong looked back up at his other date, shrugging as she looked like she was having fun dancing.
His attention turned to Haneul. His eyes looked her up and down before biting his lip. She looked like an easy target, so Hongjoong would play with her.
“Let me go get something to dry it with.” Haneul said and turned to walk away but he grabbed her wrist. “Can I buy you a drink, since you spilled your other one.”
Haneul smiled and fluttered her eyelashes. “Sure why not.”
Hongjoong intertwined his hand with hers as he started pulling her to the bar. He only let go to lean against the counter. She turned to reach in her purse acting as if she was grabbing her wallet.
“It’s on me.” Hongjoong flirted as he asked the bartender for two drinks.
Haneul nodded but her hand wrapped around a vile, she tried to remember the steps San had taught her. Hongjoong leaned closer to her flirting more as if he hadn’t been rubbing up against a girl a couple minutes ago.
“So what’s a pretty girl like you doing here?” He asked and Haneul looked around. “I was supposed to meet my friend here but I don’t know where he is.”
Hongjoong’s expression changed, pretending to be intrigued. “Oh really, well I’m glad that you’re not alone. I would hate for such a pretty girl like yourself to be hurt.”
He reached out and pushed some of her hair out of her face, Haneul faked a giggle at his action trying her best not to gag at the action. The bartender placed two glasses in front of them, Haneul pulled the glass away and sneakily dumped the vile of nectar into the drink. It wasn’t enough to do much to the Demon and it was only to distract him. Haneul faked a sip and scrunched up her nose before stirring it up.
“Do you not like it?” He asked with fake concern and Haneul shrugged. “It’s…okay.”
He slid his drink over to her taking her drink from Haneul’s hand. “Here have mine.”
Haneul took a sip from the drink trying to suppress a laugh. Sucker, she thought as she watched Hongjoong take a big gulp of the drink. He reacted and looked at the drink wondering why Haneul’s was stronger.
“So what’s your name handsome?” Haneul asked flirting back stepping closer to him. Their chests were almost touching as Hongjoong leaned down. “Hongjoong, and what can I call you beautiful?”
“Haneul.” She giggled at the complement.
“So pretty just like the heavens.” Hanuel laughed as she touched his chest. Her hand slowly moved ghosting across his chest to his right arm.
They continued to talk, Haneul tried to make everything seemed as natural as possible and like he had her under his spell. her hand continued down his arm before stopping at his hand.
“Joongie?” She purred his name out as she grabbed his hand. “I need your help with something.”
He just hummed as he leaned closer to the woman, their faces inches from each other. He was too distracted to understand what was going on. Haneul smiled, it seemed to easy.
“I ned your help getting my powers back.” Her breath was against his lips.
“Anything for you baby.” His voice dropped an octave.
“Is that a deal?”
“Deal.”
Haneul squeezed harshly on his hand as she laughed. She looked down and watched as a golden light snaked up around their arms. Haneul remembered San’s instructions.
“Demon’s love to make deals so you have to make the deal and have him say ‘deal’ and then you’re set. It won’t be an unbreakable deal but it means he has to help you or else he’ll die.”
Haneul let out a laugh as Hongjoong snapped from his dazed thoughts. He tried to pull from Haneul but her grip was too tight and he couldn’t even pull away with the deal being set. He watched as the glowing golden light snaked up his arm and into his chest. He groaned as he felt the sharp pain in his heart.
“You bitch!” He hissed finally pulling his arm from her. He glared at Haneul who smiled and downed the last bit of alcohol. “Pleasure doing business with you Hongjoong.”
Hongjoong was frozen there watching Haneul. He rubbed his hand and watched as the woman flaunted away from him. The Demon cussed under his breath, how could he be so stupid and let himself get wrapped up in a deal. He couldn’t do anything but help her out now.
She excited the club, there was bit more pep in her step now as she rushed up to the car. She pulled open the door and got in.
“Did you get him?” San asked as Haneul pulled the passenger side door close.
She ran her hand through her hair and laughed. “It was so easy.”
San smiled and turned on the car, Haneul looked over at the werewolf. “Now what do we do?”

“I should take you home.” Yeonjun finally broke the silence as they stood outside of the building. He lit the cigarette hanging from his lips. “You had a lot of nectar, I’m sure that’ll still affect you in the morning.”
“Yeonjun.” Haneul ended his ranting, he sighed. “Yes?”
“Just go back inside, I’ll uh I’ll contact you when I figure things out. I just need to be alone right now.”
He nodded and blew out the smoke. “Okay, okay.”
He said over and over again trying to come to terms with everything. Haneul started forward but her friend sighed as he called again. “Haneul!”

She turned to face him. “You sure?”
Haneul just gave him a smile and nodded, she turned again and headed off into the night. She stumbled along the street back to her home, her heels in her hand. Yeonjun was right, she could already feel the effects from the nectar. The woman pressed her hand against her head as her knees gave out and Haneul crashed to the floor. The heels in her hand rolled away from her as she just laid there. The fall hurt a lot more for some reason, she pushed up so that she was sitting on the ground. A groan left Haneul’s lip was she saw her ripped tights and skinned knee, a few drops of blood flowed from her cut. Tears started to fill her eyes and rolled down Haneul’s cheeks, she let out a string of cusses into the night.
Haneul had always talked of being a human and how she wanted to be one but she felt weird and empty now that she was one. It felt like her life had ended and nothing like what she had expected. She pushed onto her knees before crawling to where her discarded shoes were, the pain ebbed in her knee but Haneul didn’t care. Finally she pushed back up onto her feet and continued towards her apartment, mumbling as she walked. Her apartment was just around the corner.
The woman stumbled through the doors and down the hall, over to the elevator. The doors opened with a ding and Haneul used the wall as her support, the woman bawled as the elevator took her up. She almost missed her floor but was able to pull herself into the hallway which seemed so much longer now. Her eyes fluttered open and close, all Haneul wanted to do was sleep forever in her bed. Haneul pushed open the door, going to turn on the light but furrowed her eyebrows as they were already on. That made her perk up, her eyes searched her apartment glossing over the man digging through her fridge.
Haneul sighed as she dropped her shoes, doing a double take as the man spoke. “I though a goddess would eat better than this.” He hissed out moving the scarce food in her fridge.
As she stumbled over to her table, she got a better look at the man. He was big and buff, his shirt looked two sizes two small around his arms and shoulders. A hole was already forming near the seem on the neck of the shirt. his hair fell in front of his eyes and he shook his head to push the hair from his eyes, almost like a dog. Haneul stared at him blankly, not confused or angry just blankly. She swore she had locked her door when she left but there was this mystery man standing here, raiding her fridge.
Her mouth skipped over the question she knew she should ask, and all she did was flop into a chair and responded to his sarcastic question. “Well my real job hasn’t paid me and being a genie doesn’t really pay the bills.”
The man scoffed and grabbed the package of raw meat that Haneul had been saving. He ripped open the package easily, grabbing the raw meat with his hand as he discarded the package onto her counter. He slammed the fridge door close and started walking up to the table. He pulled a seat out and took a big bite of the meat. Haneul should’ve been terrified, there was a random man in her house anyone else would be scared shitless.
“Real job, yeah right.” He said through a mouthful of meat.
Haneul just rolled her eyes, she didn’t know this man nor did she want to. All she wanted to do was sleep in her bed for ever, she didn’t want to talk to people or be part of the society for at least a thousand years. Haneul was human now, she would have to face the world one day but that didn’t mean it had to be tonight. She would get used to her human life and figure out how to live but right now, she was gonna sleep for a couple of days.
She ran her hand over her face. “Look, I’ve had a pretty shitty day today and I just want to sleep so can you come back tomorrow?”
He looked up from eating, his eyes glaring into her soul as he gulped another mouthful of raw meat. Haneul gulped as her nose scrunched up, she ran her hand over her stomach feeling queasy as she watched the man scarf down the raw meat. It was disgusting to her.
“Can you stop that?” She jeered as he went in for another bite. She turned away and mumbled to herself. “That’s so disgusting.”
He glared before closing his mouth. He turned his hand and let the meat fall from his hand onto the table, it hit the wood with a disgusting plop and Haneul shuttered.
“Yeah, I know, that’s why I’m here. I’m here to clean up this stupid mess you got yourself into.”
“What if I don’t want help?” She questioned, Haneul’s voice was soft before becoming stern. “I hated living with the gods and now I’m free.”
The man laughed, “is that what you think?”
“I’m human now aren’t I? I’m not controlled by the gods anymore.” Haneul shrugged.
That’s what she thought, but Haneul wasn’t exactly sure on what he meant. Haneul could no longer grant wishes, and she was sure she wasn’t immortal now. She was human like all those people she had granted wishes for but unlike them, she wasn’t the same. Haneul was a shell of a human, she didn’t know how to live or love or learn, she had no family or friends. She was human once but she had lost that humanity long ago, Haneul had traded her humanity for immortality. All she knew now was how to survive.
The man laughed again and Haneul felt embarrassed. “You really think you’re free? you’ll never be free, you’ll never be human when you’re under their control.”
He hissed out the last part, Haneul could see his jaw clench and he glared over at something. She followed his gaze and saw him staring out of her window at the moon, it was full tonight and looked so pretty hanging up in the sky. Haneul thought of the story, the one of Dalnim.
“When you betted your powers, what did you think would happen?”
The woman shrugged looking down at her hands, he nodded mumbling something under his breath. He sighed and gulped, it went silence between them. Haneul had never heard her house so quiet before, it felt eerie sitting here.
“If you don’t get your powers back by the next full moon, you’ll turn to dust.” He said, his voice filled with sadness.
Haneul’s voice came out quieter than she expected, unsure on what he meant. “What?”
“You’re dying as we speak.” Her heart dropped as breathing became harder.
He looked guilty as he played with his hands. It was a nervous habit of his, as well as biting his nails. The man hated being the bearer of bad news but there was no sugarcoating it.
His words were barely audible for Haneul as she tried to wrap her head around the news he just broke. “Those of us who make deals with the gods are never truly free from their control.”
He wasn’t human, that sentence gave him away. That’s why Haneul felt so connected to him. He was something different, something mythical and just like Haneul, he was trapped under the control of a god and goddess. Her eyes locked on his figure, he seemed smaller now like a scared little kid. She went to say something but he stood up and cleared his throat. He pulled something out of his pocket and put it on the table in front of Haneul.
“If you want help, meet me at this place.” He said and moved over to the door.
He was a stranger but he knew so much about the situation, she didn’t want him to leave. Not when she had so many questions, but when she opened her mouth nothing came out.
“Who are you?” She finally pushed out
“I’m a creature of the night. I am called many things, a loud-garou, a beast, a lycanthrope, or as most people know….a werewolf.” He called over his shoulder as he pulled the door open.
Haneul shook her head. “No, who are you.”
He stopped in the doorway, his hand tightened as he looked over his shoulder at the woman. His heart skipped a beat and Haneul saw a small smile flicker on his lips as if he hadn’t been asked that question before. Haneul smiled back as he answered.
“San.”
Then he was gone, the door closed behind him leaving Haneul alone but not lonely.

With an eerily creak, the door slowly swung open. The atmosphere from inside the build spilled out to where Haneul stood. The warm yellow glow poured out and the sound of some slow jazzy music swirled from inside. Yeonjun stepped through the door and seemed out of place in the dimly lit speakeasy, almost as if he was transported into the Prohibition era
“Come on.” Yeonjun reached out his hand towards Haneul with a smile. She gulped before taking it.
He pulled the woman into the build and she jumped as the door shut behind her like magic. Once inside, Haneul got a better look at the strange place Yeonjun had dragged her to. the thick scent of cologne, alcohol, and cigarettes made Haneul’s head spin and the laughter didn’t help. She tightened her rip on Yeonjun’s hand as she took a second to get used to her surrroundings. Her eyes darted around, most of the inhabitants were more focused on their drinks and talking to those who also sat at their table rather than the two that looked out of place.
She scoffed looking at the people, even they seemed lost in time. The men wore tailored suits that looked like they were from the turn of the century and the woman were clad in the best dresses and jewelry that money could buy them. A smirk crossed her lips and she tried her hardest to not laugh. The speakeasy was filled with a hazy fog and Haneul didn’t know if it was from the cigarettes or if there was something more magical at play. Yeonjun and Haneul started moving forward and that’s what caught the eye of the occupants, the talk began to change. Now they were more hushed whispers as they stole glances towards Haneul.
“Mr. Choi, what can I get for you?’ The man behind the bar asked as if Yeonjun was a friend. Haneul tilted her head at the action and pulled her hand from his.
“I’ll have my usual.” Yeonjun answered leaning against the bar before his eyes wandered back to Haneul, he open his mouth again. “And make one for my friend.”
“Yes sir.” The bartender answered and moved to make the drinks.
Haneul moved cautiously, taking a step or two away from Yeonjun as she ran her hand over the counter. the wood buzzed underneath her finger, this place was full of energy down to its core. She wondered if somehow this building was stuck in time. Her eyes looked back at the door as she tilted her head again. It felt like that door was the doorway between two times. It was eerie as she made a note of the bar. Tables sat in lines on the floor and booths hung against the wall, and finally in the corner of the room was a grand staircase that lead up to some other place. Her feet pulled her forward and almost across the entire bar.
“Haneul.” Yeonjun called out to the woman, she turned quickly and rushed back up to the bar as he passed her a drink. “Here’s your drink.”
“Thank you.” She replied, Yeonjun took a sip of his drink but Haneul was a little more hesitant. “You know it’s a nice thought but it won’t do anything.”
Yeonjun cocked his eyebrow and shrugged. “I don’t know, this stuff is pretty strong.”
She played with the glass for a little bit, rubbing circles into the side. It was a beautiful deep shade of red. It swirled around in her glass, the liquid shimmered iridescent. Haneul brought the glass to her nose. A sweet but fruity scent filled her nose, it was like nothing she had ever smelt before. She tried to put the scent to something but she was sure that there was nothing like this. Her mouth water just at the scent.
“What are you doing?” Yeonjun laughed at the girl. Haneul looked over at him furrowing her eyebrows. “It smells like nectar.”
“Take a drink.” He urged her and slowly the glass met her lips. The liquid felt smooth as it slid down her throat.
It didn’t just smell like nectar, it was nectar. She knew that taste too well, the addicting taste and the smoothness that you could never get from alcohol and the lack of burn. She put the glass back on the bar and sighed.
“So what is this place?”
“Just a little hole in the wall I found.”
“But what’s with the-“ Haneul asked nodding over to the inhabitants, Yeonjun looked over his shoulder before chuckling. “I don’t know.
All of the sudden, a loud fit of laughter broke the calm atmosphere. Haneul looked back at where it came from, her eyes landed back on the staircase. That laugh…it seemed familiar. For some reason she though she knew who it came from. Yeonjun smiled before grabbing his drink with one hand and Haneul’s with the other. She squeaked as she grabbed onto her drink, he pulled her up the stairs. Haneul tried her hardest to not spill her drink, finally they reached the top and Yeonjun let go of Haneul.
“Ya, you almost made me spill my drink.” She hit his shoulder as the man just laughed.
“This way.” Yeonjun motioned over down a walk way. Haneul sighed and followed him.
Haneul looked around this new room, the lighting somehow got darker even though she knew that it was only noon outside. The smoke seemed to be thicker up here and it smelled more like musk up here, even the atmosphere up here seemed to change. it buzzed with energy even more than downstairs and Haneul could tell, at least up here, this place was filled with the gods. She caught the eye of several gods and goddesses she knew. Most were just faces she saw when walking the street or just a small nod or talk at the bar.
The two stopped in front of a table, which looked better fit for a casino than a bar. A waiter stopped next to the table, bowing to the group.
“Do you need anything.” One of the people sitting at the table raised up their glass acknowledging his words.
A voice purred out, “waiter.” Haneul knew almost immediately who it came from.
Haneul’s jaw clenched subconsciously as did her hand around her glass. A scoff left her lips as her eyes landed on the fire goddess. Hwasa, good old Miss. Hothead, it was no surprise that she was here. She was the worst gambler out of all of them, Haneul wasn’t sure if she had seen the outside world. She held up her almost empty glass of the same swirling iridescent red liquid.
She purred out again, smiling sweetly at the man. “Get another round of nectar for us.”
“Yes ma’am.” The waiter answered, he bowed and turned to walk away.
She put her glass down and pouted as a couple candles near her went out. Hwasa reached out and touched the wick, it caught fire and she smiled as if it did anything for the lighting. she saw the two out of the corner of her eyes, seeing Haneul first but pretending she didn’t. Yeonjun sat down and pulled Haneul into the seat next to him, which unfortunately was right across from Hwasa.
“Glad you could join us Yeonjun. I missed playing with you.” She said in a weirdy nice voice, she frown at the last little bit. Yeonjun chuckled while Haneul rolled her eyes. “You came just in time, things were getting good.”
“I’m glad too, I enjoy playing even though I’ve never won.” Yeonjun laughed and everyone else chuckled as well. Hwasa reached out. “Come on, you know that’s not true.”
Haneul glared between the two, her face twisted in a judgmental expression as Hwasa flirted with her best friend. Haneul cleared her throat changing the subject. Yeonjun let out an ‘ah’ before placing his hand on Haneul’s shoulder.
“I brought a friend if that’s okay. Everyone, I’d like you to meet Haneul.” He introduced Haneul who did a little wave to the table. A few of them looked at Haneul with a judgmental look and a few looked confused. Hwasa’s face fell as her eyes looked over at Haneul.
She pulled her hand back and sat up straight. Hwasa put on a face smile as Haneul spoke. “Jowangsin, it’s so great to see you.”
Hwasa laughed a bit. “Sorry, it’s just I haven’t heard that name in forever. I go by Hwasa now, I see you’re still the same sky as ever.”
“Haneul, it’s the only name I’ve ever known.” Haneul hissed back.
The tension was thick through the remarks, Haneul could hear the underlying mockery in her voice. Hwasa and Haneul’s relationship had always been strained, they has hated each other since they knew each other. Hwasa though Haneul was childish and hated how she thought she was better than the gods, Haneul thought Hwasa was childish and didn’t take being a goddess seriously.
Hwasa tilted her head. “I would also say it’s good to see you but I thought you didn’t like gambling.”
Haneul forced the smile on her face until she looked over at Yeonjun. “I do but a wise person one said, ‘life is short and anything can change in a millennium.’”Yeonjun smiled at Haneul’s words.
The other goddess rolled her eyes and tapped her fingers against the tables impatiently. She moved her hand up and sparks shot out. The person next to her leaned away and whimpered as the sparks shot directly at them.
“That’s great.” She gritted through her teeth and grabbed the deck of cards harshly and started shuffling as loud and slow as she could. Her eyes glared at Haneul ever so often.
Then all of the sudden, she stopped and gasp dramatically as her hand pressed against her chest. “You do know how to play blackjack, right Haneul?”
Haneul forced a smile as she answered through her teeth. “I do, thank you very much.”
Just the, the waiter came back holding several glasses on his tray. He passed out the drinks, Hwasa smiled as she fluttered her eyelashes at him. He blushed and Haneul rolled her eyes. He offered one to Haneul who refused and pointed to her, still full, glass.
“Anything else?” He asked and Hwasa nodded her head. “Blackjack please.”
The man nodded and put his tray down, he picked up the deck and passed out two cards to the players before putting two cards on the table. The others put some money in the middle as Haneul pulled her wallet and placed a few bills into the pot. Hwasa scoffed and mumbled out a ‘cheapskate’ so Haneul placed a few more in.
Her cards were okay, they were a 17 together. Her eyes looked over at the others, Yeonjun had a 9 and a 3, Hwasa had a 6 and a 8. The game went on, she watched as the others hit card and card, and the finally it was done. A laugh escaped her lips as she looked at the cards, all of them had busted even the dealer meaning she had won. The dealer pushed the winnings toward the girl.
“Beginner’s luck.” Hwasa hissed out.
The game went on, rounds came and passed. Haneul won and lost as did everyone else. The goddess glared at Haneul every time she won, pulling her lips into a snarl but Haneul didn’t care. She was too busy to care and frankly, she was having fun. The woman understood why the gods enjoyed and seeing Hwasa becoming angrier the more she won was all the buzz she needed. Haneul wasn’t a goddess but in this moment, oh how she felt like one.
“For being the goddess of fire, I wasn’t expecting you to be the one to crash and burn.” That dig was petty but between the nectar and the gods, Haneul allowed herself the dig.
Hwasa clenched her jaw. “You have no say, you’re not even a goddess.”
The woman laughed as she tilted her head. “You’re right, I am no goddess and I’m still beating you, Jowangshin.”
Hwasa snarled at her again, she hated hearing her goddess name but before anymore could be said, the dealer started passing out the cards. Haneul hissed as she looked down at her own cards. A 9 and an ace, it was only a 10. It wasn’t too bad but she hoped that luck was on her side. She gained a 7 and her heart raced but her smile fell as she got a 5 on her next hits. Haneul hissed out and ran her hand through her hair at the bust, sneering as Hwasa laughed at her loss. The tables turned when Hwasa busted, Haneul almost spat out her drink. The dealer was the winner of that round but Haneul was more focused on beating Hwasa than anyone else there. Both Hwasa and Haneul had an angry look on their face as they watched their money get swept away from the middle.
“What’s wrong Haneul? Don’t like losing?” Hwasa asked mockingly
Haneul glared back at the goddess. “I could ask you the same seeing as you basically run this bar.”
“You should clean up your act Haneul, I hate women with dirty domains.” Hwasa hissed out. Haneul smiled slyly as she tilted her head. “Good thing this isn’t my domain, right Hwasa?”
Hwasa’s jaw clenched before she leaned on her arms. She cocked her eyebrow, “I raise.”
She didn’t move to put any money into the pot, Haneul furrowed her eyebrows as she fished out her wallet. “I didn’t say anything about money, I just said ‘I raise.’”
Hwasa laughed as Haneul slowly put her wallet back into her pocket. The woman clicked her tongue and sighed.
“What are we betting?” Haneul questioned.
The goddess didn’t say anything as she held up her hand. A flame appeared, Hwasa played with the flame that came from her hand. She stared into the glowing fire with a devilish look in her eyes. Haneul didn’t have a good feeling with what she was about to say. The two locked eyes finally as Haneul took a deep breath.
“Our powers.” The flame went out as Hwasa clenched her hand into a fist.
The whole group gasped before leaning closer to each other and whispering. Their powers? Haneul gulped, could you even bet your powers? There was so many thoughts that filled her head. What happened when you lost them? Would Haneul become human again or would she just be a powerless immortal being? Hwasa pouted staring at the girl as her eyebrows furrowed together.
“If you’re scared, we could go back to betting money.” Hwasa said with fake sadness lacing her voice but Haneul sat up straight. “What happens if I lose?
“You lose your powers.”
“And if I win.”
“I’ll give you my powers.”
Haneul opened her mouth to answer but a foot jammed into hers and she doubled over in pain. Yeonjun grabbed her hand, looking at Hwasa as he answered for his friend.
“Would you excuse us for a second.” He jumped up immediately and pulled Haneul away from the table until they were out of earshot. He pulled the woman in front of him, staring down at her as if he was scolding a child. “No.”
He didn’t have to say more, Haneul scoffed and argued back. “But Yeonjun.”
“No” he hissed out again. “You’re not doing it?”
“Why not?’
“Are you crazy Haneul. We don’t know what could happen if you lose your powers.”
“And? they’re not yours, so why do you care so much?’
“You’re really gonna risk your powers for your pride?” He hissed out loudly, scolding her. Haneul looked down and Yeonjun sighed. “I’m just worried about you Haneul. we’ve been friends for centuries, I don’t want you to become a mortal.”
Haneul just shrugged at his words she wouldn’t be mad. How many years had she wished to be mortal again, to fall in love and do the things that humans could do. Haneul was human at one point, she was sure that she had a family once. Somewhere out there was mother and father who loved her and maybe she had siblings who looked up to her. That was just a dream, Haneul had no memory of any family except for Yeonjun.
“You could die!” Yeonjun’s voice was almost a yell. Haneul gasped and took a step back. The man sighed and calmed down, spitting out at her. “You could die.” He said slowly holding back tears. “And I can’t lose you.”
“I’ll be fine Yeonjun. Luck has always been on my side, that’s how we met. Luck led me to your door.” Haneul reassured Yeonjun before turning and heading back up to the table.
“Made up your mind?” Hwasa asked as Haneul slammed her hands down on the table. She nodded. “Deal.”
Yeonjun sighed as he walked back up to the table. He couldn’t look at Haneul and he sat down with a defeated sigh. Haneul couldn’t back down, not against Hwasa. Hwasa pushed out of her chair and reached across the table. Haneul did the same and the women’s hands met in the middle. As their hands met, almost immediately their hands were engulfed in flames. Haneul hissed not at the fire but at Hwasa squeezing her hand. The people at the table gasped and moved away, Haneul’s stomach dropped. She had see this before, only once before. It was an unbreakable deal and now Haneul really couldn’t back down, her life was on the line. The fire dispersed and Haneul pulled her hand rubbing her wrist where she could still feel the heat. The two women sat back down and Haneul looked over catching Yeonjun’s eyes.
“What did you get yourself into?” His eyes asked before he looked away. Haneul took a deep breath and the game began.
The dealer hesitantly dealt out the two cards to the women and only to them. Haneul looked down, a queen and a 2 which was a safe 12. Her eyes ran over to Hwasa’s cards, a 7 and a 9. A 16 together, her breath caught in her throat as Hwasa smirked.
“Hit.” The dealer placed a card next to her other two. A 4, she was now at 16.
“Hit.” Hwasa also said raising her value from a 16 to a 18 with a 2.
“Hit.” Haneul pushed out, the dealer slowly placed the card down.
Her eyes slowly looked down. Her heart stopped at the sight of the four cards that sat in front of her. A 22, she had busted. Haneul had lost. She had lost the game. She had lost the deal and….her powers. Her blood ran cold as she sat there frozen. The cheering seemed muffled as her eyes were locked on the card, a single tear rolled down her cheek. Of course the only time she gambled….she had lost everything.

For being immortal, Haneul never could seem to get enough of human life. The mornings always seemed to be her favorite, the calm before the storm. She loved the sound of the city waking up before the chaotic rush that was human life. Her day always started out the same, as her alarm hit 6:30 Haneul was up. Her morning routine never took long, she would snap her fingers and her clothes would appear, she would then go into the bathroom and do what she normally did. Brush hair, brush teeth, get ready for the day and by that time her coffee would be done.
Haneul would sit on her balcony as she sipped on her coffee, a perfect view of the thing she cherished. Card honked and sped down the street, the noises of the city rose up into the air and met Haneul where she sat. There she would sit for however long it took to finish her coffee and once she was done, Haneul headed out of her apartment. People locked their doors behind them just like Haneul, before walking through the halls. Some said hello to her and others rushed past her either to their room or to the elevator.
She passed by a small woman who had an even smaller dog. Its eyes locked on the being as it barked and growled, Haneul laughed as the woman apologized. She couldn’t care though, dogs were smarter than their human counterparts. Haneul continued forward, turning the corner. A gasp left her lips as she saw the elevator door slowly start to slide shut.
Her walk picked up into a sprint as she yelled out. “Wait!”
The woman already in the elevator didn’t move except for her hand. She lifted her finger up and the door slid back open just as Haneul got there.
Haneul panted for a second before thanking the woman. She bowed to the woman before pressing her back against the wall. Every so often though, she took a peak at the woman next to her. The woman’s beauty was incomparable, she looked stuck in time as if the world had been moving around her while she stayed the same. She wore a long black dress that hung onto her figure, it match her long black hair and her white gloves matched with the white flower accents on her big derby hat. Her red lips were the only pop of color making her more fit for a black and white movie than modern day.
Haneul closed her eyes for a second, sighing before opening them. In the corner of her eye, Haneul gasped seeing the woman. Her clothes had changed into a silvery dress, her gloves now white and her derby hat was gray still with the same white flower accents. A small smile appeared on the woman’s face as she heard Haneul gasp.
“You’re not human are you?” Haneul asked suspiciously.
The woman’s beauty moved opening her bag, she pulled out a small compact. Haneul watched as she opened it and picked up the puff before tapping it against her cheeks.
“You younger immortals have no manners.” The woman tisked and Haneul gasped.
She bowed almost immediately, cussing herself out in head. How could she forget, the goddesses thought of themselves as the most important things in the universe. It was known that even looking at them wrongly could lead to a curse upon your entire bloodline.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get off on the wrong foot.” Haneul spoke as the woman just stared at her like a child. As Haneul pulled back up, the woman spoke elegantly. “It’s nice to see another goddess in the building. I thought I was the only one.”
She reached out her hand, every one of her movements seemed so smooth and like she glided on the air. The back of her hand was turned to the sky, Haneul gulped and took the woman’s hand with both of her hands.
“You can call me Ms. Dal.” Even her words seemed to come from her mouth smoothly.
Haneul bowed again as the goddess said her name. “Thank you Ma’am but I’m not a goddess.”
At that moment, Haneul realized that the elevator was taking a long time. With how long that they have been here, they should’ve been at another floor or the lobby. That it’s when the woman’s identity hit her, Ms. Dal or Moon in English. Haneul pulled her hands over her mouth, the goddess who was standing in front of her was Dalnim, the goddess of the moon.
“I didn’t know it was you, I’m sorry.” Haneul said dropping into another bow. Dalnim just laughed and put her hand on Haneul’s chin dragging her back up.
“Don’t apologize, many don’t recognize me anyways. They’re all too scared.” She shrugged and looked away, pushing her hair back over her shoulder.
Haneul giggled. “I used to look up at you all the time when I was a young girl. Your story was one I listened to every day. I always believed that if I climbed the highest mountain I would be able to meet you.”
“Well now you have, and maybe we’ll meet once more.” Dalnim said matter-of-fact. She stepped forward, and as she did the elevator dinged.
The doors slid open almost on cue allowing Dalnim to walk out. Just as Haneul thought the doors would slide close, the goddess turned around. Her heels clicked on the floor as she faced Haneul.
“Be careful Haneul, being immortal is no easy task.” With that, the doors slid shut and the elevator continued down.
Her skin tingled as the words swam through her ears. How did she know my name? Did she read my mind? Haneul tried searching for the answers before coming to the conclusion that it was a goddess thing. She pressed her hand against her heart, feeling it race under her skin. Haneul leaned back against the wall of the elevator, understanding the fear that Dalnim put into the hearts of other gods and men. Just like the sea, Dalnim was beautiful but also could be dangerous. Pissing her off ran the risk of her sending out an army of those loyal to the moon and Haneul didn’t feel like running away from werewolves or vampires in her lifetime.
“Miss?” A voice pulled her from her thoughts. Haneul blinked a couple times seeing a man standing in front of her. “Miss? Are you okay?” He asked shaking her.
Haneul nodded and smiled. “Sorry, I guess I was too deep in thought.”
“Well, this is the lobby and you need to get off.” Haneul looked past him at the open door and saw that he was right. Haneul apologized and quickly stepped off of the elevator.
She rushed to the door, taking a breath as she pushed it open. The sun warmed her skin as she stepped from the building, the bustling city moved around her. The cars honked and people talked as they moved down the street. It filled Haneul with joy and contempt, as she started moving down the sidewalk. Humans were social creatures, filling places with life.
The woman reached into her pocket and pulled out some headphones. They looked as normal as any other pair but they were a special kind. They didn’t block out the world but filtered it until Haneul heard what she needed. It allowed Haneul to do her job, it caught when someone made a wish. All of it was her, she made people fall in love and win more money than they needed and knew what to do with it. She could help find people or things, create relationships and destroy destiny with a snap of her fingers but everything came with a price.
That price was memories, no matter how hard they tried they wouldn’t remember their wish or anyone involved with their wish. Haneul had watched it all, friends who had been together since childhood forget each other due to greed, family lose their kin due to wanting just a few more minutes with their dearly departed love ones. Greed took more and more until people were no longer themselves. Haneul hated watching as it happened but those were the rules that they followed by. Neither man nor god was safe from the law of the universe.
The headphones sounded the same as when she had them off. Conversation flew by so fast that she could barely keep up with them. The day was young and beautiful though, and Haneul knew it would be a good day.
“Mom!” The cry filled her ears and she wasn’t sure if it was coming from the headphones or not.
The sound made Haneul stop almost immediately, as the crying of a little girl persisted. Slowly she reached up and pulled the headphones off, it continued. The woman searched for the noise, turning around and around until she spotted a little girl across the street.
She was small, most likely no older than 6 years old. Haneul watched as she wiped her tears and continued to cal out for her mother. No one stopped to help her, they continued to walk past her. Humans were unusual, sometimes they were wonderful and helpful and other times they were selfish and uncaring. It broke her heart as she watched no one help the young girl and she took it upon herself.
She stepped onto the street, cars flew past her honking for Haneul to get out of the road. The woman didn’t flinch as the cars barely grazed her, and all she did was hold her hand up. She looked to the side watching as one got closer to her but before it hit her, Haneul snapped and it seemed like time stopped. The car froze inches from the woman, the man in the car laid down on the horn but the sound never came. The people walking on the sidewalks froze in time, everything had stopped. The only sound was the soft sniffles of the young girl.
Haneul continued forward across the street and towards the girl. She continued to cry, digging her face into her hands not hearing the woman behind her. Haneul stopped right behind her and squatted down so that she was on the girl’s level.
“Little girl?” Haneul asked. “Why are you crying?” Her voice was soft and comforting.
The girl turned around wiping her snotty nose on her sleeves. She sniffed and answered between gasps.
“I can’t find my mom.” She broke out into another sob fit after the words. Haneul reached out and softly grabbed her shoulders, they moved up to cup her face.
Haneul put on a smile and wiped her flowing tears away. “Do you know where you last saw her?”
The girl calmed down once again, but the tears rested on her waterlines threatening to spill out. She shook her head. “No, I’m scared Miss.”
Haneul smiled at the girl, running her hands up and down her arms. Her tears welled up in her eyes and started spilling out. “I just want my mommy, I wish my mommy was here.”
Those two words made Haneul sigh, at least now she could help. That’s all she needed and so slowly Haneul stood up and took the girl’s hand. Slowly the walked away from the road and into a clear part of the sidewalk.
“What’s your name?”
“Hae-won.”
The small girl looked up at the woman, who brought her hand up.
“That’s a beautiful name, Hae-won.” Haneul continued with her comforting voice. Hae-won watched as she snapped her fingers and life began again.
People moved down the street and the man who had been honking for Haneul to get out of the road was confused. They stood there for a second, Haneul looked around waiting. Her wishes never took long and a second later, a woman came running from around a corner.
“Hae-won!” The mother called out for her little girl. Hae-won gasped and let go of Haneul’s hand, she felt Hae-won’s little fingers leave her grasp.
She watched as the woman squatted down scooping up her lost daughter before crying tears of joy. Haneul smiled as Hae-won’s mother made sure she was okay.
“Where were you, I was so scared.” She pushed hair from Hae-won’s face and cupped her daughter’s cheeks.
“That lady over there helped me.” Hae-won answered turning to point at Haneul but the woman had vanished. Neither her nor her mother would be able to see the immortal woman.
“It must’ve been an angle who helped you.” Hae-won’s mother said as she stood up, the two started walking in the other direction.
Haneul sucked her lip in, it was bittersweet. Oh how the woman wished to have a family who loved her, a family who care about her and was scared when she was gone. She had that, at one point or at least….Haneul thought she did. Kids never realize what they were wishing for, wishes were silly little words and Haneul couldn’t take that away from them. So Hae-won walked down the street with no consequences.
“You’ve gone soft.” Haneul turned her head to see Yeonjun standing behind her. “You didn’t even curse her did you?”
The woman ran a hand through her hair as she stared in the same direction where Hae-won had disappeared. “She’s a kid Yeonjun, I can’t do that to her.”
“What’s the age limit then? Teenager?”
Haneul rolled her eyes at Yeonjun, “this was a nice talk Yeonjun.” She started walking as she put one of her earbuds in. Yeonjun followed behind her. “Come on Haneul, I want to know. If a teenager wished for something would you curse them.”
“I may be an immortal being-“ Haneul hissed out. Yeonjun muttered under his breath. “God”
“Genie.” Haneul corrected. “But I’m not a monster.”
Just then, Haneul heard it in her earphone. The two magical words that gave Haneul her job, I wish. Her eyes darted around and saw her targets, two men stood in front of a TV holding harshly onto lottery tickets. Gamblers were the most common people who appeared in front of her. They always wanted more.
Haneul looked back over at Yeonjun who crossed his arms looking bored. He cocked his eyebrow and tilted his head daring the woman to do it. Haneul snapped and everything stopped once again, the two men started freaking out. They all worried about that and not what was about to happen. One of the men turned around and saw Haneul walking up to them and hit his buddy who turned as well.
“Who are you?” One of the men asked as the other nodded. “What’s going on?”
Haneul looked between the two men. “Sim Do-yeon and Noh Chang-woo. I am here to grant your wish.” They started to freak out.
Their eyes were wide as they tried to speak. Haneul stayed there waiting for one of them to actually speak.
“H-how do you k-know our names?’ Do-yean asked and leaned closer. ‘Are you stalking us?”
“I’m a genie here to grant your wish.” Haneul explained again and they scoffed. Chang-woo was the one to speak. “Put yeah and I’m a millionaire.”
“With my help, you can be.”
The men gave each other a look before they bursted out laughing. The woman sighed and crossed her arms across her chest, she was becoming impatient as they just continued to laugh. She could walk away, leave them be and just continue on with her day. That would be better for both of them but as she looked over her shoulder, she saw Yeonjun staring at her and Haneul hated when Yeonjun judged her.
“Since it doesn’t seem like you want your wish granted, I’ll be going.” Haneul went to turn but she felt someone grab her wrist. She turned and saw Chang-woo holding on her wrist with both of his hands. “Please, we’re sorry.”
“Thank you.” She turned around, pulling her hand from the man’s grip. They both stared at the woman with so much want that neither one of them spoke and instead waited for her to be the one.
“Both of you want to be millionaires, right?” They nodded almost immediately, Haneul looked over at the TV which would reveal the lottery winners in just a couple minutes. “I can change those numbers so that you two are the winners.”
“Please.” Do-yeon. “Then I could finally travel the world and live the life I wanted.”
“We could buy fast cars and yachts, live the life of luxury.” The woman couldn’t believe that they were laughing again. Especially with what was about to be proposed.
“You humans have no manners.” The men apologized at the hiss from Haneul before she continued on. “As I was saying, with my powers I could make you millionaires but it comes with a price. You two will become rich and have all the money your heart desires but you will lose all memory of your friendship. Are you sure you want to continue?”
“I won’t need friends.” Chang-woo scoffed. “If I’m a millionaire, I could just buy new ones.” Do-yeon laughed and nodded
Haneul sighed and nodded. “Your wish is granted.”
Time started again, Haneul turned and walked away as the two men were now focused on the TV. She made her way back up to Yeonjun who stood there, his head tilted to the side. He crossed his arms as if he was a parent waiting for his child.
“What now?” Haneul groaned seeing the man who just laughed. “Nothing, I just forgot how boring it was to watch you work.”
“Boring? What’s your power huh?” Haneul shot back. “Yeah that’s what I thought.” She turned so she was facing the same direction as Yeonjun. The two watched as the TV spewed out the numbers.
“How long does it take for the curse to work?” Yeonjun asked and Haneul shrugged looking at him. “Depends.”
The men became more excited until the last numbers came out and they started jumping around, jumping into each other’s arms until they pulled away confusedly as if they hadn’t seen the other one before. Haneul watched the scene and scoffed, she still couldn’t believe that they would give up their relationship for money.
“Humans confuse me so much.” She sighed and Yeonjun nudged her arm. “Says the one who loves them.”
“You forget I was once like them.” Haneul explained but as she looked over, Yeonjun was gone.
The woman searched for the man, she finally saw him walking down the street away from her. If there was one thing to know about the gods, it was how fickle they were. Selfishness and self-absorbed were two words to describe gods, another way was they only cared about what you could do for them. Yeonjun was the tamest of the gods Haneul had met but still he could be just as bad as some of the others. This was one of his faults, he did whatever he wanted and gave it up as soon as he was bored. So it was better to a good conversation or else it was a wild goose chase after him. Haneul wasn’t even sure if Yeonjun was a god but he wasn’t human.
“Yeonjun, wait up!” she called but if he heard, he didn’t stop. Haneul groaned and chased after the god, panting as she caught up to him. “You need to slow down.”
Yeonjun’ nose crinkled as he mocked playfully. “Or you can just walk faster.”
“you’re the worst.” Haneul fixed her hair and rolled her eyes. Yeonjun leaned closer to her. “Oh but you love me.”
She giggled and shook her head. Yeonjun stared straight forward, locking on wherever he was dragging Haneul to. She had met him centuries ago, and he had pulled her out of her shell. He introduced her to his group. That was another thing that should be known about gods, they absolutely loved to gamble. Living forever got boring so making bets were thrilling especially with magic. They flocked to anything that they could gamble on, casinos, bars, horse racing, anything really and no one would know unless they knew about the mythical.
“So where are we going today?” Haneul asked the stoic man.
Yeonjun shrugged. “I was thinking, we go gamble with the gods.”
“You really want to play with fate?” Haneul furrowed her eyebrows. Yeonjun returned the confused look. “What do you mean fate?”
Haneul sighed and rolled her eyes. She knew he was joking but he knew how she felt about the gods. Haneul never liked them and never understood the fascination with them. Sure from the human perspective, they were awesome but that was before Haneul got to know them. True gods were selfish and helped in an unhelpful way, making things so much harder than they needed to be. Haneul didn’t understand why anyone would worship them because if only mortals knew. If mortals knew, gods would be desolate and unknown to the world. Haneul only survived because she knew how to please them.
Yeonjun rolled his eyes. “Come on Haneul, live a little. Life is short.” Haneul giggled. “What if in the next millennium gambling goes extinct?”
The girl laughed more, hit her friend’s shoulder as she joked. “Then that would be the end of the gods as we know it. I would miss them…well some of them.” Yeonjun cocked his eyebrow at her words, scoffing. “Did I just hear Lee Haneul, the woman who despises the gods just say that she would miss them? You know that your powers were given to you by a god.”
“And I’m thankful, but I’d hate to be one. It seems like a lonely life.”
“Like your life isn’t already lonely. You’ve spent centuries living alone.”
The girl gasped and crossed her arms before pouting. “I like living alone, thank you very much.”
Yeonjun just laughed at her as she turned away from him. She looked around at the surroundings trying to figure out where they were. They were now in some alleyway, it wasn’t some creepy back alley but it definitely would be hard to find. Haneul watched as Yeonjun just continued down one of the walkways.
“Ya, Yeonjun. Where are we going?” He shrugged answering back. Haneul raced after him following him down the alley.
Finally they stopped, Haneul stood behind Yeonjun before quickly stepping around him. They stood in front of a tall building that seemed ti be connected to something on some road. The building was gray and old, it almost looked as old as Haneul was. The huge windows were frosted with the remnants of what looked like a logo or name and above the old and warn wooden door was some beautiful stained glass that had been warn with time.
Yeonjun stared up at the building with a smile, it felt like home to him. Haneul caught the man’s pleased expression as she searched for clues. It told her that Yeonjun knew this place but not only did he know this place but he enjoyed being here. He stepped forward and wrapped his hand around the golden doorknob.
“Let’s have some fun.” Yeonjun smiled back at Haneul as he pushed the door open.

Prologue
Tumblr media
Summary: “I know the gods roam the earth because I used to walk with them”, Haneul is an immortal being with powers that most humans would kill for. When Haneul gambles with the gods, she loses her powers and without her powers she’s cursed to die by the next full moon. She hurries to get her powers back with the help from the last person Haneul wants to be around: a Demon.
Pairing: Demon!Hongjoong X Fem!O/c
Word count: 610
Warnings: mythical creatures, mentions of getting cursed, spiritual messages, mentions of religions, mentions of magic usage.
Author’s note: this is my edited version of Where A Soul Goes. I feel like my writing is better so I’d appreciate a reread. I also just finished Mr. Plankton and I realized how similar this story is to the show. I’m back for good :)
Tumblr media
There are many assumptions you could make about the world, like if it was created by a god or if there are creature that are non-human, some believe in magical components in the world and some believe that everything magical is bullshit and science is the only real thing in the world. As a smart man once said, “a philosopher once asked, ‘are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?’ Pointless, really…’Do the stars gaze back?’ Now, that’s a question.”. Are stars windows to what outside of our universe? Are they staring back wondering about humans and their silly lives they live?
Do the constellations move because of the Earth’s rotation or do they move on their own and humans cannot see it. Do the things that you lose actually go missing or were they just stolen by the mischievous Brownie that lived in your closet? Your knowledge of the world changes your perception. If you believe in the unexpected, you find strange things in your daily life but humans aren’t very intelligent creatures. Most people believe that stories about spirits and gods are just that…stories. They don’t believe that those mythical creatures could be walking next to them, living just like them.
They are all wrong. I know the gods roam the earth because I used to walk with them.
Humans are selfish beings, only caring about what they want and what they believe in. This selfishness has dulled their senses of the world and has hidden the mythical world away from the prying eyes. Only if they opened their eyes to the world and looked outwards instead of in would they see it, the world that belonged to the gods and goddesses. The places that those creatures of myth roamed freely without any fear. They would see that there was a world of wonder and amazement just a few feet away from them, if only people didn’t turn a blind eye. I was naive once just like them, centuries ago when I was a mortal. Centuries ago when the magical wasn’t shunned by the world. I was young then, those 1,000 years ago. Barely into my twenties, I was merely a baby.
I grew as centuries passed, I grew with empires which fell as fast as they started. Generations of families grew and died before me. I watched revolutions, movements, wars, and the world rebuild itself over and over again. The world evolved as did magic, as the world changed from stone tools to technology that could wipe entire cities off the map. Magic learned how to as well, it never died out as people believe only adapted and changed. Gods and goddesses learned how to survive in a modern world, shrouding themselves in the fog of the unknown. As magic prevailed in a world that forgot its roots, so did I.
I just realized, you’re probably wondering who I am. Let me introduce myself; my name is Lee Haneul, I am an immortal being from the heavens and for the past a thousand years I have been given the ability to grant wishes. A genie is a name that might come to your head, but I am not trapped in a lamp waiting for someone to come release me and I am no fortune teller looking into a crystal ball. My magic is real and I grant real wishes for those few the heavens have deemed favorable. For years, my life has been a ball until I had one bad waltz with the gods and they do not react nicely when you step on their feet.

I am finally back on tumblr, I have had a terrible year with college and my personal life. I know I’m not the most reliable with posting but I had horrible writers blocked with my fics and I felt guilty every time I looked at my blog. I’m gonna be rewriting the chapter of Where A Soul Goes because although I haven’t been writing on here, I’ve worked on my writing skills. I’ve come up with a better storyline for my fic and I feel like you guys deserve a better fic than I’ve written. The Master list will stay up but I will be editing (and adding) chapter. I’m glad to be back and I will be adding more solo content as well🥰🥰

I think he'd be extremely shy. Like VERY VERY shy.
He would be as red as a tomato if you gave him a kiss on the cheek. (+ you'd hear his adorable giggles.)
Would message you random things at random times.
I totally see him texting you good morning at 4 am.
I feel like he'd talk about video games to you for hours. If he finds a new game he likes, he will talk about it non-stop... would not give you a break.
Obviously before kissing you or telling you he loves you, he'd have to get comfortable. Give him time and he'll warm up to you.
He's just an absolute sweetheart with a heart full of love for you.
I think that the first person he'd show his new lyrics to would be you. (And/Or the members ofc)
He isn't the type to have makeouts, tell you you're hot, etc.
He's more the type to tell you you look cute, give you quick pecks, kiss your cheek and I'd say he adores holding hands with you.
Tumblr media
He'd take you on dates to a beautiful, flower covered field. While your on your way there he would talk to you about your day, how you're doing, about things you love and he'd 100% hold your hand. When you get there he'd set down the blanket, sit down and pat the place next to him. When you sit down, he'd lay his head on your shoulder, close his eyes and just relax while your playing with his silky hair. He would've even fell asleep after the stressful day he had, but he received a message and the notification sound woke him. He quickly picked up his phone and saw it was already quite late so he told you to pack up. Then again, he took your hand in his and walked you home like the good boyfriend he is.
Tumblr media
For sure kisses your cheek as a goodbye gesture.
When you come over to the dorms, he wouldn't let anyone disturb you two. (I mean in a non-sexual way of course.)
You go to sleep? He'd sit/lay down next to you and play with your hair until you woke up. If it was one of the guys who woke you up, he wouldn't talk to them for the rest of the day as a joke.
You are talking about something you're passionate about? Wouldn't let anyone talk over you and would listen to you for hours.
He likes photography so be prepared to have a photo of you taken every few seconds.
Would probably have photos of you sleeping on his shoulder, atleast a thousand of you smiling and of course photos of you just doing everyday activities. He'd think you're the prettiest person on earth.
Would let you watch him game.
Maybe he'd even let you play instead of him.
You're one of his top priorities so you will be well taken care of.
He'd buy you something everytime you two go out..
Would spend too much money on you probably.
Overall, he's just a certified lover boy. Nothing and no one comes between him and you.
