Shanythia is a Navajo silversmith living in the spectacular Monument Valley, in the US. Following the tradition, she only cuts her hair when she loses a close relative. Until now she has only performed this ritual once, when her grandfather passed away.

In May I spent a day in Shanythia’s courtyard and that was truly captivating. Interestingly, her courtyard sits precisely on the border of two states, symbolising the complex history of her people. Half of the courtyard is in Arizona, while the other is in Utah. It is amazing to see people like Shanythia, who despite so many challenges, uphold ancient traditions and remain deeply connected to their roots.

Yesterday, the linguist and activist Carme Junyent died. It saddens me deeply to write this post, because she was someone who I really admire.

She was a linguist who led the Grup d'Estudis de Llengües Amenaçades (GELA, Research Group on Endangered Languages) in University of Barcelona and author of many books and articles about language diversity and the defense of minoritized and/or indigenous languages here and around the world, and a firm defensor of immigrants' language rights and cultural diversity. She was also very active in defense of the language rights of her own community, Catalan speakers, against linguistic imperialism from Spanish and French.

Even in her last moments, she wrote an article about the right to die speaking one's mother language (Catalan in our case) if you are in your own country, instead of the usual case of forcing the patients who are part of the local marginalized and/or indigenous language community (even those in the very last moment of their lives) to speak in the dominant state language (Spanish, in our case). She sent it to the newspaper Vilaweb, where she often collaborated, to be published right after her death:

She has died of cancer at 68 years old. In her last months, most doctors who treated her in Catalonia's public healthcare system did not speak or did not want to speak Catalan, only Spanish. But she took the decision to keep firm and not change her language, so she could die in her mother tongue.

Why does English use a before some words that begin with ⟨h⟩ but an before others?

You might have heard that you use a before consonants and an before vowels, and this is true, but the rule applies to consonant and vowel sounds not letters.

hour /aʊɚ/ → an hour /ænaʊɚ/

history /hɪstəri/ → a history /eɪhɪstəri/

Same goes for acronyms:

an ATM

a UNICEF proposal (pronounced with an initial /j/ consonant)

However, enough people have reinterpreted this as a spelling rule and applied it to the way they speak that for some people the spoken rule has changed slightly: For them, if a word begins with an /h/ (sound) and the first syllable is unstressed, you can (but don’t have to) use an. This is why some people say an historical.

and because this one cell is so damn huge, it contains multiple nucleuses and billions upon billions of individual chloroplasts.

but the really bonkers part... is that in order to reproduce, these fucking things undergo mitosis just like any other cell.
