Oliver: You could have just kept flying away when you saw the flashing lights!

Hal: I panicked, okay?! And anyway, ACAB.

Oliver: You're a cop!

Bruce: Why am I in this madhouse? Can I get a transfer to another cell?

Alien Cop: No. Your guardian will be here soon to pick you up.

Hal: Our guardian? Someone contacted Black Canary?

Oliver: No.

The door opens. Marvel appears on the threshold. Oliver, Hal, and Bruce blink in shock.

Marvel: How are you, officer? Were they well behaved?

Alien cop: A little loud, but that's usually the case. Your ship is in the impound lot. It can be picked up in three Kerov months. We sent you the amount to pay the fine. Sign here to pick up the children.

Marvel signs the strange device. The doors open instantly. The Captain grabs Oliver and Hal by the ear and walks towards the exit. Bruce follows them silently.

Marvel: How did you even pull this off? I understand Gl and GA, but you're Batman. I expected more from you. I had to take a break from what I was doing to fly to the other side of the universe to get you. I hope you're ashamed.

The heroes are placed in the back of another ship and Marvel takes the wheel. They fly in silence to Earth. Marvel leaves them at the Watchtower and flies back to Fawcett.

Oliver: What the fuck just happened?

Hal: I don't know.

Bruce: Hmm.

a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted

their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"

Billy eats.

The plate raised up through a seam in the floor glitters, polished to a mirror shine and edges gilt in gold. The "food" is a small pile of appealing shapes - ovaloids, frustums, spherocubes and the like in pastels and soft jewel tones.

Supposedly, it's meant to stimulate omnivorous appetites, but everything Billy mechanically shovels into his mouth tastes like ash.

He can't think like this. Can't observe. If he does, he'll go back to thinking about the source of this food.

Another bite. It dissolves on his tongue without much prompting. He barely has to swallow. Useful, when he can barely bring himself to do so.

Something needed to be easy, where gaining it hadn't been.

Hard-won, the kinder would call it. Lucky shot, would sneer the meaner.

[But all Billy can hear is the wet splatter as skin split under his knuckles, neon pink fluid hot and stinking of something like diesel smearing his face, and that awful, awful click as something gives way in its throat and it stops-]

Billy's stomach roils and he bites his lip, clamping a hand hard over his mouth.

He can't vomit. He can't.

He needs this energy. Wasting it after all that-

Don't think about it.

Billy breathes hard through his nose, shaking. His eyes dart to and fro, trying to latch onto something in the present.

The lavender frustum in his hand has crumbled like wet sand. No structure beyond the surface, no support to resist his grip. No juice or crumbs will hit the floor he knows. No mess to be cleaned up.

Billy shovels the rest of it in his mouth before it can disappear fully.

He needs this.

It still tastes like ash.

Billy pauses by the stone slab, considering.

Magic gathers at the tip of his index finger, skin turning golden and glowing slightly in the low light.

English would be too eye-catching, too obvious. Anyone who'd found it might discard it as vandalism, and rightly so.

But, well. They were going to translate all the other carvings anyway. So with Solomon's help on the language...

[Billy was here.]

A simple declaration. Childish, in fact.

Warnings would be useless. The timeline didn't twinge in the least when he thought of it, but at the very least, he wanted something of him to be remembered.

Billy gently blows the dust away from his neat, string of rounded characters; braces himself and walks on to face his fate.

Thousands of years later...

A great hubub rises in the archeological community in no little part due to the incongruous line of text found in the ancient civilizations' room prior to the sacrificial chamber.

Champion Side-Gigs

Shazam (The Wizard) needed a way to keep the lights on in the Rock of Eternity so he started Shazam (The Music Seach website). He uses the bare minimum bits of magic to find the music they want and in return he gets the little bit of energy they directed to searching for it/would have spent searching for it.

The Wizard is pretty good this time in setting Billy up for his Champion role but kind of forgets to let him know about the many side gigs he has, including the Shazam site.

Billy gets spooked the first time he hears a request in his head but gets used to it, and helping people find their music fairly quickly.

He's often known as the hero who hums catchy tunes as he does his thing.

Over time, Billy/Cap takes over the other side gigs The Wizard has been doing to maintain the Rock or just plain keep himself entertained.

Idk like he does parcel delivery or something as well.

Green Lantern catches Cap in a uniform with alien text on it delivering packages once. He almost doesn't believe it himself.

Flash tries a highly recommended food delivery app and nearly has a heart attack when it's Cap at his door with a comically small scooter and arm fulls of takeout.

Diana walks in on her mom discussing armor forging patterns and magical weave patterns with Cap who is noting down her requests to create and later hand over for payment.

Considering it's actual work, Billy doesn't feel guilty using it to help him eat or get extra cash for other stuff, plus he gets to travel a lot and meet loads of new people!
