This Empty Home (of his)

Mikami crept out of the woods like something from an analog horror story, his shoulders hunched forward in a violent curve of his spine, his feet dragging through the grass as he neared the streets of the city. Just standing a foot from the sidewalk set his heart off, thundering against his sternum like it wanted to escape his very chest and flee the scene. But he had to go somewhere. If he continued how he was trying to go on now, he'd die in hours.

   He was certain that his home wasn't an option anymore, and neither was anywhere he had frequented before. Maybe even his family was wrapped up in this. He could picture his poor mother now, frightened every time she left home because the SPK couldn't keep their personnel to themself. There was only one place he could truly think of that would be safe, though he wasn't sure if that was wishful thinking or not.

   Slowly, ignoring the gasps and stares of the people who were walking along the outskirts of the city, Mikami entered a town of paranoia and dread. He scampered along backroads, eyeing every corner and camera with a hatred so intense he doesn't know how it hasn't consumed him yet. On the other side of this cameras are the ones who killed his God, he was sure of it. He was sure Near was watching his struggle with some tea and a laugh, leaning back in a nice, comfortable chair in clean pajamas, observing it all like a TV show. He was a fucking freak like that, and Mikami would be sure to bring him to ruin. He had brought tens of criminals to justice through his work as a prosecutor; this should be no different. Near is a murderer. 

   But he stood face-to-face with a building he has only ever seen once, and never has he seen the inside. A large apartment complex, known for being grand on the inside but unassuming on the outside. There were never any reports of suspicious behavior in here at his law firm, so either the people inside conducted good business or nothing truly ever happened past the crumbling bricks that housed it. It looked like a place that should be affordable to poor travelers who came to these outskirts looking for cheap lodgings, but it was anything but affordable. Mikami knew the kind of money that lingered inside. 

   Weird, however, was the complete isolation he met when he finally braved the entrance. He'd stood outside like an idiot for a good couple minutes as if he wasn't risking everything just to be publicly in the daylight, waiting for someone to come up to him and arrest him against the wall like an action movie. Then when he finally got his courage to go in, he was met with... what? An utter lack of civilization? Not a single soul lingered inside the abandonment of this beautiful complex, not even a squatter taking advantage of the absence of its usual patrons.

He’s not sure how he’s managed two days in these woods. They weren’t massive, nothing like the forests in other regions, but Mikami was not a man who enjoyed nature. He was dying in the heat, his hair surely growing more knotted by the second, and his skin breaking out in places he didn’t know he could get acne. It was terrible. And awful. And he wanted to go home.

But the DeathNote he kept clutched to his chest like a lifeline was what drove him to keep going, his hands—so used to desk work and writing—turning into those of a better hunter than him. He learned to strangle creatures, learned how to start a fire. Basic things he managed to remember from his days as a Boy Scout.

Keeping the smoke down was a little difficult, but he tried different things. Wet leaves, sacrificing his suit jacket. Admittedly, he cried once or twice in those two days. Maybe more than once or twice.

Grief came and so did frustration. He ate because logically, he knew he had to. He drank dirty water from the creek because getting sick was better than dying of thirst. It doesn’t mean he didn’t vomit or sob or scream into his thighs. It doesn’t mean he liked it.

But perhaps this is where his life was always meant to lead him. Ever since he was a boy, he had not been a leader.

Mikami had grown up gritting his teeth and holding his tongue only until he couldn’t anymore. He had grown up tucking his nose into a book and trying (and often failing) to find his own business. He had grown up with this nasty attitude towards the world and government, always fitting just outside the mold and never inside of it.

And then he had found a real purpose to follow. A man to worship. A man who had not behaved like Mikami had— a man who had taken action against the injustice he saw and had been determined to right the world’s wrongs. How was he to not fall in love? He was everything he dreamed of being.

His shoes weren’t a nice polished black anymore. They were scuffed and mud-covered. Mikami was unbearable to look at, even to himself. He dreamed instead—or maybe he was just sleep-deprived and hungry. Thirsty.

Dreaming At Dawn

Mikami sits outside for longer than he thinks he should, his hair long overgrown and his skin scratched raw. The suit he wore tonight was the same one he’s been wearing for a week, dirt and sweat and blood and whatever else clinging to the dirty fabric. He felt too weak to shower; he’d barely been able to hobble himself all the way here.

It was a hill on the edge of the city, one nobody came to. Buried in the vicinity was a notebook, one that had been so lovingly touched by his God’s hands. One that had been revered and pored over by him, one that had the last remaining memories of who he had been in the last moments of his life. The pen strokes he was certain he’d find inside were like all the love letters he used to wish his God would write him, though their shared morals were still always enough. It was enough. At least, it had to be.

This had been the place they met up. Only twice, but their ghosts lingered nonetheless. He could see it with his chin propped up on his knees, hands running through the grass beside him. It was scraggly with autumn, drying into a murky green rather than something lively. Life was funny that way— he grieved, and it seemed like the planet did too. Mikami saw nothing to smile at here.

He had watched Light die. He knew the papers would be calling the death pathetic, but he didn’t see it the same way. His God had gone out like any good man did: clinging fast to his beliefs and living by them. Light had died in the evening sunset, bathed in gold like a king being buried in his riches. The purpling of the sky had laid him to rest, dimming into nothing the way his eyes stopped focusing. Mikami had not seen it all, but he had seen the body where it lay on the steps.

It was a tragedy that even the clouds wept for, rain pouring down the moment Light had drawn his last breath. His God had been something special and the universe had known it. Light had been divine intervention, Light had been a saving grace, Light had been— had been—

Well, what are these ‘fandom spaces’?

I’m glad you asked! Fandom spaces are channels in our server specific to fans of a media where they can share fics, ideas, headcanons, gifs, rambles— well, really anything.

See how little we have? We’re hoping YOU can change that! Fandom spaces are available on request to be added to the category, and we’d love if you joined with some of your fellow fans so we can create one for you :)

Hmmm… well, the fandom spaces and the community are sort of our center pieces, but— we have 18+ rooms available for adult members (NSFW chats and proship chats, the roles to access these are available upon request!) to share general things or to promote their writing! We also have solid rules designed to help things stay civil in our server and to protect writers against evil AI… and these rules are open to suggestions! We have a wonderful team of staff who are open to any proposed rules you think would make the server better, but not just rules! We have tickets you can open for any kind of feedback, concerns, or suggestions you have for our server :)

Ohhh, I see now! Well, I'm here to inform you that we’re playing with the idea of doing various writing or prompt based (so our artist friends can join in) events! This helps our writers get more out there as part of a collective masterlist and gain more recognition when these masterlists roll out! Currently, server staff are thinking about both a May event and a summer (June through July or August) event!
