Hi, you're, like, my favorite Cass page/scholar ever!
I'm currently doing a fun little analysis on Bruce Wayne: Fugitive, specifically Batgirl Vol. 1 #29 -- aka the scene of Dick and Cass recreating the murder to figure out what could've happened.
What is your opinion on the scene? I think it's fascinating in particular how after the constructed murder, Dick seems even more determined to stick to his belief, meanwhile Cass almost seems shaken and defeated in a way I've never seen her be before.
OOH YESS THE DICK & CASS ISSUE OF ALL TIME!!! I think I've talked about it a few times in terms of Dick & Cass' relationship (here is one) but in terms of Cass and her feelings about BRUCE. So interesting!!!
I think Dick & Cass are the two characters with a deep and profound belief in Bruce, BUT their faiths are kinda fundamentally different. Dick's faith is in Bruce, in the man who raised him, the "man [he] knows" - his faith comes from a really in-depth understanding of Bruce as a person. That is not where Cass' faith comes from. Cass, who only very recently found out Bruce was Batman at all, thinks of "Batman" first (as she says in this panel). Her faith in Batman doesn't really come from knowledge of the man himself, because she's known him a relatively short time, but in their shared attributes and how she sees herself (and her disdain for killing) in him.
Actually it's nice to contrast it with Bruce's reaction to Cass' killing. We see that Bruce cannot accept Cass killing someone. Why? Because she's like him, and how can somebody understand his mission and be like him and be a killer at the same time?
Now flip this. Now Cass thinks Bruce is like her. They both have a similar desire to save everyone, a similar deep compassion for life. But Cass is a killer. She knows somebody with her compassion, her morals, can kill someone because she did. So Cass is mostly against Bruce having killed Vesper, because she does still know Bruce and believes in him. But when they role-play this scene, the brutality doesn't cement her belief like it does Dick. In Dick's mind, Bruce could never be this brutal, so he didn't do it. In Cass' mind, Batman might've been this brutal, because hadn't she been this brutal once?
(Also a later issue in M/F parallels Cass' death wish with Bruce's current spiral. Cass' death wish stemmed from her killing Faizul, so it's possible Cass wondered where Bruce's guilt comes from.)
Another thing to note is that Dick was role-playing the killer while Cass was role-playing the victim. In the opening scene of this issue, Cass dreams about an evil Batman shooting Vesper. In hindsight we know this was actually David Cain, and I wonder whether the parallels between Bruce & David also influenced Cass' feelings. While she was being fake-beaten and shot by Dick, who was role-playing Bruce, did she think of David? We know David shot Cass. We also know David did do the crime. It's possible the role-play reminded Cass of the violence she suffered at David's hands, probably unconsciously - and unconsciously she related this to Bruce himself. One of her father figures was capable of that violence, so why not the other?
Ofc ultimately her faith in Bruce is still intact, but those are some possible factors in her reaction! Alfred later thanks Cass for helping reinforce Dick's belief, but part of me feels like Cass was also hoping Dick would reinforce her belief (which he did). Anyway those are just my thoughts, but I would LOVE to read your meta when you post it!! Feel free to disagree with any of this if you have a different reading too! (And thank you for the compliment omg 馃馃 just rambling my Cassie thoughts on here I'm glad they're of use to someone!)

hey man everyone loved how convenient and easily forgettable you were on earth. u were the least inconvenient person out there. my buddy told me you were super helpful and nice and didn't take up any space and just slid away from their mind as soon as they stopped looking at you. it was really impressive how little of an impression you made on anyone. sucks that it didn't save you man.
