thinking of wyatt callow, reaped at the age of 18, one reaping away from escaping the games. a booker boy who people looked down upon because of the business he found himself in to get by.

he died protecting lou lou, who had the worst odds of winning.

thinking of louella mccoy, only 13, who put her trust only in haymitch as an ally. she didn't even make it past the tribute parade.

the capitol were still able to use her as a pawn, even after her death.

thinking of lou lou, who was just an innocent girl from district 11 - a jane doe with no place to call home anymore. she had no chance of surviving in the games, barely able to communicate.

she died because of one of the few things she could recognise - flowers she remembered fondly from before she was lou lou, that she didn't and couldn't know were poisonous.

thinking of maysilee donner, the meanest girl in the district. she crafted and refined tokens for fellow tributes, even gifting one of her own to louella, because she understood how important appearances are. she wanted to make sure the capitol couldn't pretend they weren't human like they were.

the girl who fought back, verbally and physically, with no hesitation. who kept lenore dove's secret, even from haymitch. a rebel in many ways, just because her insistence on not letting the capitol trample her.

maysilee died bravely, targeted for the very fight she embodied. dying, not alone, but with her new-found brother, making him pinky promise as she did.

thinking of haymitch abernathy, who wasn't supposed to be there. who was forced into the games because he wanted to protect lenore dove, his girl.

the boy who couldn't save his sweetheart, nor her innocent mimic, the booker boy, or the meanest girl in town.

the sole newcomer who only wished to bring the games to a stop, but barely made a dent. each of his attempts at rebellion failing, along with his death wish. even when delivered directly, by way of parachute, a pitcher of poisoned milk, haymitch managed to survive due to his worry for his only ally left.

his selflessness, his rebellion, his compassion only led to him being seen as a rascal who acted mostly in his own interest. it led to him losing everyone, in the arena and at home, unable to save them from a fate that should've been his. snow targeted his family because he couldn't kill haymitch anymore.

the boy that grew up to mentor and lose two tributes every year, losing more of himself each time. until katniss everdeen and peeta mellark were reaped, kids representative of his past (of the covey, of burdock, of lenore dove, and of the privileged maysilee). he was able to save them, and they were apart of the movement that saw his promise to lenore dove was fulfilled.

he spent the rest of his life honoring her memory, caring for geese much like she had, with a new family who saw no more reapings, even on his birthday.

if it hadn't been for going into the hunger games, haymitch would have been the best uncle for katniss and prim. instead, they didn't know him until katniss herself was going, and i just think that's so tragic.

she's such a tragic character 😔 shauna's so desparate to be loved but would rather keep people at a distance to control them and keep herself from getting hurt (this rlly starts after jackie's death, and losing her baby sends her over the edge). shauna would rather have their anger and fear over their respect bc it's easier to control.

she reminds me so much of a tragic hero, it's insane. but she's also the tragic villain in her own story and i love that.

there's the part of shauna that is vulnerable and connected to jackie - the real jackie. and that is where shauna is at her highest, where she's a yellowjacket about to go to nationals with her best friend.

but her fall begins with the crash and turns specifically with doomcoming and fighting with jackie - that is when her fate becomes inevitable and tragic.

the villain part of her is her insecurity and grief, which manifests in ghost jackie - the girl who shauna convinces herself was who jackie was in life for her own sanity. that is the part of her that has brought her into the bitter, angry and prideful individual that devolves into evil insanity.

I’m not a Shauna hater by any extent (she’s one of my favorites and I stand by that) but I think it’s so funny and delivers such brutally satisfying justice that in the end, in this season, she was the Antler Queen but she wasn’t the team’s queen. The team’s queen was Natalie. When it mattered most, they put their faith in Natalie. Shauna almost got everything she ever wanted. Almost.

She was almost revered in the way Jackie once was. She took Nat’s place hoping to feel adored. Instead, she became hated. She did the same thing with Melissa. She hoped to be adored, and instead Melissa wound up almost killing her. That’s what Shauna never understands. It’s the glitch in her character. She can try to force people to love her all she wants, but she will never succeed. You can push and push and push, try and hold someone down with an iron fist, but in doing so you will either crush them or they will learn to loathe you and desire escape.

She held on tight to Jackie, and you know what Jackie did? She went outside to escape her and froze to death. Shauna tried so hard to keep Melissa that she went berserk and nearly killed her the moment she said enough is enough. She tried to hold Natalie down, crush her spirit and her wings and keep her complacent in the violence, but then she drove almost every girl on the team to potentially sacrifice their lives for Natalie because they couldn’t continue like this. Mari died as Natalie’s sacrificial lamb. She wouldn’t have done that for anyone. They had to have freedom, and Shauna had proven she was not worthy of their faith. Natalie had their faith. Natalie had their faith that she would save them. Shauna even drove her own husband and daughter away because she tried for years to keep them in an isolated little box where she could control and filter all external forces.

She tries to control people and force their love for her, again, and again, and again, and she never learns. Even in the finale she fails to recognize what she’s done.

Because she was having fun playing the role of revered queen, but no one was having fun playing the role of servant.

everyone knows that yellowjackets is based off of lord of the flies, but this season has made it so clear to me how much it is mirrored/alluded to in the show.

lottie is like simon, nat is like ralph, and shauna is so clearly like jack it's crazy. misty reminds me of piggy in some ways too, and i feel like tai is reminiscent of roger in some ways.

i need to refresh myself on the book bc i haven't looked at it in depth since 2020 for my gcses, but i defo want to go more in depth with it bc this is so interesting.

im glad the yj writers decided to keep/have mari as pit girl even if she was the most likely candidate (and before s3 the most popular theory was that it was her) bc not only does it work better emotionally than hannah or gen - who we barely know and don't care for all too much - but it also doesn't put the show on track for being like pll or gossip girl, where they changed the answer just bc people had guessed it.

not to mention, trying to kill ppl in yellowjackets is a pretty small offense

lottie sent a group of people to sexually assault travis, brainwashed him, forced him to take shrooms and caused a drug addiction, and fear-mongered everyone so much that they ruined their chances of rescue so i kinda dgaf that he tried to kill her sorry

i have SO MANY thoughts about the s3 finale im actually going insane.

- mari may you rest in peace icon, i'll miss you and your hater ways.

- im glad akilah's still holding out, im praying she makes it and is a survivor but has run away to live on a farm, away from all the crazy girlies we've been following.

- gonna be honest, the intro kinda confused me (esp the lottie part) but im defo going to look back at it when not sleep deprived bc it's so interesting.

- travis is 0/3 in actually hunting in the hunts (if you count doomcoming as a hunt itself), he's an icon and i really hope we get more of him in the future bc his character rlly fascinates me.

- shauna antler queen!! i knew girlie could get worse and she DID!

- van im so sorry babe, i wish you didn't have to see mari like that first.

- i have thoughts ab the scene with misty and nat and the transponder thing and everything around that but i wanna elaborate on that more in another post bc it deserves it.

- tai eating the heart was crazy but i guessed it the second she stabbed van's body, im interested if this becomes a ritual for ppl particularly close to each other.

- callie killing lottie is perhaps the most interesting avenue they could've gone down, esp. bc she says its an accident but its clearly not from what we see - she's becoming a mini shauna and i love it idc

- im so glad callie and jeff got out of there but im kinda scared it's not gonna go well for them (i have an inkling callie may end up killing either jeff or shauna in the future)

there's defo more to say ab the episode bc it was just THAT good - genuinely one of the strongest for me. I defo need to rewatch it though, before writing in depth thoughts. especially considering the intro of the episode itself.

i did not forsee yellowjackets ep 4 to be the reason why i remembered blood in the water from legally blonde existed and i am now obsessed with it. i might make an edit.
