Sky is a huge company in Europe, which a lot of major US providers have an interest in taking.Comcast is currently Americas Biggest provider of tv services, so buying Sky transforms it from a US success to an international one. After Comcast made an offer of $17.28 per share, some investors are slightly sceptical that Comcast has overpaid. This led to the shares falling by 8%. It has been reported, that although urged to draft a will, Franklin just ‘never got around to it’. As she died intestate, the family will have to decide how to split her $80m estate between them. A niece has accepted the role of Executor, and so far, no conflicts have emerged.

Its been reported that her four sons are expecting equal shares of her estate, and with an estimated net worth of $80m, this process could potentially take years, and it seems likely that it will play out quite publicly.

After a ruling by the supreme court last Monday, judges will no longer need to be consulted when relatives and doctors agree life support treatment should end. This ruling was for a man who had an extensive brain injury, who’s life support was turned off without the family having to go to court. This could affect the care of thousands of people each year, who are in nursing homes and hospitals being kept alive by medical interventions. This recent ruling has caused the Right to Die debate to resurface, leaving many people across the UK discussing their opinions. The UK’s campaign, Dignity in Dying, asks MP’s to change the current ‘Broken Law’ and start allowing terminally ill people to control and choose when they die.

Armen Alchian was the professor of economics at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1954, he was able to figure out the secret component of a newly developed hydrogen bomb. He did this, just by looking at the share prices of chemical suppliers on the stock market.  

He had a huge set of skills, which served well when he was working for RAND in the 1950’s. During the time Armen was employed by RAND, the first test of a Hydrogen Bomb was carried out. In the build up to the test, people in the economics department were understandably very curious about the components in which made the new bomb, however, physicists and engineers couldn’t provide any information due to the sensitivity of the topic. That didn’t stop Armen wondering though, which led to him to try and ‘find out for himself’.

He looked at documents from the Department of Commerce and information about who dealt with the metals that could have been used in the Hydrogen Bomb. After cross-referencing his information, he was left with 6 companies. He watched the stock prices of these companies for 6 months and saw that during the build up to the test, Lithium Corp of America shares jumped by $10, and fell straight after the bomb test.

He wrote about his discovery in RAND and was asked to withdraw it, so he then sat on this story for decades before sharing it.
