I thought other Jews understood that NYC has been in a state of absolute emergency (I mean smashed windows, building takeovers, pro Hamas graffiti on EVERY block, young people walking around in full Hamas gear, constant 24/7 pro Hamas protests with crowds chanting oh Hamas we love you and we love your rockets too, assaults, kidnappings, stabbings, murders) for 17 months straight and no one has done ANYTHING about it because they're so scared of the Hamas loving nuts that they're willing to completely abandon Jews. I thought we were on the same page about how the Manhattan DA dropping all charges against the pro Hamas mobs who took over Columbia for weeks and kidnapped a janitor is absurd? I thought we were on the same page that the Biden administration's response to the mass wave of antisemitic civil rights violations happening on college campuses nationwide was a joke? And we voted for him not because he did such a good job of protecting Jews from Hamas loving nuts but because he's better than Trump for ten million other reasons?

I thought we were on the same page about this!! Clearly I was wrong?? Or, maybe worse, people are now retroactively changing their opinion on the state of emergency for Jews in NYC specifically because they don't want Trump to get a political win out of it? And they'd rather Jews in NYC continue to get absolutely mobbed by antisemitic terrorist support every time we go outside than have the uncomfortable conversation about the fact that the Democratic party should have been cracking down on this a year and a half ago and didn't because they didn't want to lose the leftist antisemite vote, which they lost anyway?

How do you get the courage to wear a kippah in public? I feel more comfortable wearing my kippah, but I'm also scared so I only ever wear it to shul

I might not be the best person for this because my process of wearing kippah was sheer hubris.

But unironically, I do think it helps to remember that in many places, the worst that happens is that you'll be looked at. The worst reception I've had so far is that I'll get stared at blatantly - not necessarily in an intimidating way, but moreso in that people just like to stare. I definitely am more cautious in new areas - I never wear two earbuds anymore, and I look around my surroundings more. You may want to keep a beanie or inconspicuous hat with you for quick coverage just in case.

I definitely relate with you about being scared, and how I worked through that is just... wearing it one day. I got sick and tired of feeling intimidated, so I impulsively decided, "well, today is the day." I don't even remember what day I started wearing it because I just... did it.

That might not work for you, so perhaps you could work up to wearing it everywhere if that's your goal. You could perhaps pick public places that have smaller crowds - a local bookstore, a café, maybe a walk down Main Street. It doesn't have to be much. See how you feel. And then once you get used to that feeling, maybe you could try pushing yourself. First and foremost, this is something between you and g-d (at least, I think). However, don't feel guilty if you can't wear it all the time - it can actually set you back in that you'll just feel guilty and ashamed. It's okay if your journey in this is not linear - in fact, most of the progress we make isn't linear. For a while when I was manic, I couldn't even remember to wear my kippah, so I understand how it can be. Just take a deep breath and give yourself the chance to have a clean slate every day, because g-d certainly gives us that mercy. You deserve to give it to yourself.

One of the philosophical/theological differences between judaism and other religions is how we conceive of the consequences of doing bad things.

I just heard someone say, "well jews don't believe in hell, so why don't you-" and just never sits right with me that the only thing that could prevent you from acting in bad ways are the threat of an eternal punishment. The implication that you shouldn't care about the consequences of your actions on the worldly level are astounding as well.

I care about not doing bad because it hurts people - myself included. Even if I did believe in hell... It wouldn't factor into how I live life. I fundamentally don't agree that we should treat this life and this world as a temporary home - a rest stop - where our actions only matter insofar as it affects where you go in the afterlife.

Almost cried during Intro to Judaism last night, in a good way. The rabbi was showing us some of the Torah scrolls the congregation has. One of them is an old Ashkenazi scroll that was stolen by the NAZIs during WWII and later rescued. The rabbi explained that while this particular scroll didn’t count as kosher anymore they still brought it out for life events like births and weddings and bar mitzvahs because they wanted to show it nice things since it had seen so much pain in its past.

And lemme tell you I almost cried right there. The tears were in my eyes and they were stinging but I managed to hold back!

I think a lot of Americans have a hard time grasping the idea of Jewish indigeneity because they dont know where their own ancestors came from. Maybe they'll have vague ideas like German, Italian, or Irish, but what they know has very little bearing on their day-to-day lives. They don't dress any different, they don't speak the language their great grandparents spoke, they don't hold regular ceremonies and rituals that harken back to the old days.

The idea of an ethnic group maintaining a constant identity over thousands of years is patently absurd to them. "You're telling me you're still mourning something the ancient Romans did? That's ridiculous! Clearly you've fallen for modern Israeli propaganda, otherwise you're deliberately arguing in bad faith in order to justify land theft and genocide!"

It's very frustrating, because when I say these things I do not say them in bad faith. My friend once said "it's a very American thing not to understand large timescales", and I think she was right on the money. The process of American assimilation has cut peoples ties to their ancestors to such a degree that they can no longer comprehend a continuous identity spanning millennia.

So I'm going to say this in the clearest language I can:

There is a genuine, historically provable, continuous connection from ancient Israelites to modern Jews. By the laws and customs of those ancient Israelites I am one of them. Let me reiterate. I am an Israelite, a Hebrew, like from the Bible, and the fact that my identity has been so mythologized and talked about as if it's a thing of the past will never change that.

So yeah. I'm tired. I'm not even scared any more, fear is background noise. But I am just so tired. And to see that now leftists are going "Oh nazis and nazism are bad" is a bit laughable considering they called anyone who dared to say "Hey maybe Jews are people" nazis is just....as I said, I'm tired.

To any goyim reading this- understand that is a literal cry for help. The ADL is telling all of us that they are walking on eggshells here.

Do not take the rest of their tweet at face value- take it in the context the ADL is giving you. The are fully aware of the problem of right wing antisemitism, but they do not believe they can call out Elon Musk without making things worse for themselves and for all American Jews. This is in part because a good portion of the left has been trying it’s hardest to discredit the ADL and alienate American Jews for the last few decades, and the rest of the left just kinda went with it.
