The poem "Against The Fences" was written after seeing a charismatic woman speaking to a group of men sitting on milk crates, literally with their backs against a fence. She talked to them with such conviction as they listened to her intently. They all had been drinking, there was a liquor store on the corner of that block. It was a sight I was familiar with growing up in the hood. It was from that scene I wrote "Again The Fences" The poem can be read in my book, "I Know Why The Birds Sing Their Praise" now on Amazon.
