Honestly I see why you would say this and what you said makes sense in this from rather than other people I heard about, I sorta disagree but yet again we can't truly confirm since the creator hasn't confirmed it yet. The analysis was on point, me who never watched anime yet but read the manga there are things that can be pointed out in the anime such as color can be a huge help than in the manga

You might be getting somewhere, eye color and shape are the same the same including the hair color. It could be possible that he wasn't in the building but in my opinion they could be related because from what we know it could be his brother, uncle, cousin, or father cause of similarities

Kunikida’s Real Identity

Okay, I just finished BSD and I just noticed something about Kunikida. This has been on my mind for sometime now. I think the dedective from ADA isn’t his true identity.

Let’s think about it…

Kunikida is an idealist. A perfectionist. He has a strong sense of justice and he always becomes frustrated when he comes face to face with a situation differing from his idea of justice. He gets so angry at both himself and the world that even other people notice it easily. We don’t know much about his back story. It seems that he doesn’t have anyone he cares for or he doesn’t really have a home. It is as if he just appeared from thin air as the detective we know and joined the ADA. I know that nearly all of BSD characters are like that but Kunikida is different. For example, Dazai too is mysterious but we know that he was a member of Port Mafia in the past. The other characters have all revealed a fact about their past but we know nothing about Kunikida. His previous job was a teacher but are we sure? What if he lied about his past?

The thing I am getting at is that Kunikida has only two main traits to him. The love for his ideals and justice and the guilt and anger he feels when those fail. But he is not the only one. I can easily recall another character that’s like him.

The Azure King.

Yes. The one and only azure king. He was a famous terrorist who had strong ideals for the world he lived in and a strong, almost childish sense of justice much close to Kunikida’s. In fact he took those so far that he took it upon himself to punish those who manage to go unnoticed by the flawed system of justice. In the end, he died because of an explosion.

Here’s the thing…

I think that Kunikida and the Azure King is the same person.

My Proofs…

1. The Azure King’s strong ideals and sense of justice…

Just as I explained above. This is both Kunikida’s and the Azure King’s main treat of personality.

2. The resemblance…

If you look closely you can sed that their eye shape and main facial structure is practically the same. Also Is it me or does the Azure King have blonde eyebrows?

3. Sasaki Nobuko…

I think she seemed very interested in Kunikida but not because she blamed him for her lover’s death. It was because he was her lover. She somehow saw Kunikida somewhere and learned that he was alive as she was the only one who knew the Azure King’s face. But she didn’t know why her lover didn’t contact her when he was obviously well. So she plotted her acts to make him. She thought that he would recognize her under the name Azure Messenger and contact her. When he didn’t, she made herself a victim and planned to be saved by the ADA and thus approach Kunikida without being suspicious. But she realised that he didn’t have his memories after spending some tine with them. So she said the sentence from above to capture his attention or something… Anyway, she somehow tried to remind him who he was and when she realised she couldn’t, she let herself be shot and get killed because she couldn’t live without her lover. Azure King was her sole inspiration to keep living and he was someone else then.

4. The real author…

BSD’s plot always has some connection to the life of the real authors whose names were used for the characters.

Kunikida Doppo was also know to be an idealist and his first wife was named Sasaki Nobuko.

5. You can check this…

Kunikida and the Azure King share the same voice actor.

So my theory is…

A) The Azure King stayed alive in a hidden basement or something where the police couldn’t find him and lost his memories after getting a head injury because of the explosion making the whole building shake and making him stumble and bang his head or something. Later he created a whole new identity for himself because he couldn’t remember the previous one or the Azure King was really Kunikida Doppo the math teacher and he just forgot the part about being a terrorist and continued his life as just a normal man until he discovered his talent again and quited being a teacher to join the ADA somehow.

B) The Azure King wasn’t in the building when the explosion happened. Later he learned about the detective’s death and went crazy because it was the first time he killed an innocent man who worked to make the flawed world they lived in a little better. He had both betrayed his vision of justice and his ideals. Combined with his personality, the fact that he become just like the criminals that he hated crazed him and he decided that he no longer had the right to judge others. He didn’t reappear as the Azure King making everyone think that he died. After living aimlessly for sometime with those thoughts, he created himself a new identity because of the guilt. Kind of like DID.

So the question is…

Does Dazai know?

Did he somehow know the Azure King as a past criminal himself?

Was he trying to warn Kunikida?

Maybe he really knew Kunikida’s real identity. But he didn’t know Sasaki. When he first made a theory of her being someone related to the Azure King, he made her meet Kunikida and watched her reactions to be sure because she would know the Azure King’s face and would certainly give a sign of recognition and shock when he didn’t remember her.

Maybe he noticed that Kunikida was once again turning into the Azure King and he wanted to prevent that.
