I didn’t have trouble sleeping until I moved to Nashville. 3 years ago, on a foggy night like this one, I was tossing, turning and fumbling for my phone, checking Twitter for signs of life. Night Beds was awake somewhere (I think Winston was still living in Nashville at the time). He posted this song, and before it lulled me to sleep, I smiled, feeling the weight of that big dark blanket lighten a little. It was around then that he was, coincidentally, finishing his critically acclaimed debut, Country Sleep. I met him at a show maybe a year later and told him about those lonely, sleepless nights. I thanked him for keeping me company that one time with “Midnight, The Stars and You.” We’ve been friends ever since.

Seems like when I’m alone at my most pensive, an old friend like “Million Dollar Bill" knocks on my door and begs to be heard. This sad bastard is one of my all-time favorites, of course I’ll let him in. He never overstays his welcome, but there’s a little part of me that really wishes he would.

I cannot emphasize enough that my body  Is a badly designed, poorly put together vessel,  Harboring these diminishing, so-called 'vital organs'  Hope my heart goes first,  I HOPE MY HEART GOES FIRST!
We are beautiful, We are doomed.

Had a dream about you, laying on the waves Suffering that and surfing this, I had to say Walked around the mission, had to see your face Had to know it was you all along, I want this place

You weren't just a girl that I should meet You were the girl that I would meet For drinks in the backyard A beautiful daughter A lifetime of summer And love ever after Heaven's a julep on the porch

Truth be told, I've been thinking about people a lot lately. The choices we make. The way we make others feel about themselves and what that says about us. The weight of our feelings. The significance of insignificant moments. The sources of our strengths, weaknesses, motivations, fears and regrets. How we can be wonderfully open and horribly withholding at once. Shit, my thoughts can be blinding, unrelenting... kind of like a blizzard.
I woke up in a state yesterday - a giant, emotional snow pile. The sun was still rising when my brain started a messy-wet fight with my heart. For hours my poor logical body struggled to make sense of what was happening... Until I saw this Tweet from Lord Huron:

Both sides relented, and time stopped. I downloaded "The Night We Met," the brand new single from Lord Huron's forthcoming sophomore album Strange Trails, and removed my abominable self from my desk so I could listen to this song uninterrupted. As the music played, I melted into a puddle, smiling and crying (typical response to LH) while walking briskly in the cold and hitting repeat. All previous snowball torment was soon forgotten. The thoughts that had been pelting me all day dissipated, except for one: people. People can do magical things, like write songs that light your soul on fire.
Cue "She Lit A Fire"

I was on my way to work this morning, listening to Mikky Ekko's new album Time as I took my exit and stopped at the signal. Every day, standing on the corner, I see the same man selling copies of The Contributor, waiting for good samaritans with dollar bills. For once I remembered that I had cash on me. I grabbed it from my clutch and rolled down my window to pass it off in exchange for a copy of Nashville's street paper that focuses on, and is often sold by members of the homeless community. Music exploded out of my car at the man on the corner, who smiled and asked what I was listening to. I lowered my sunglasses and told him it was Mikky Ekko. "Mikky Ekko?" he asked. "He's so good, it makes me want to cry," I confessed. "Don't cry, baby," he replied, touching my hand in consolation. The light turned green, I wished him well and continued on.
Our exchange lasted only as long as that red light, which afforded just enough time for the man on the corner to hear these lyrics:
I'm still standing I'm still climbing Even when the rest are falling The rest are falling, the rest are falling I'm still standing I'm still climbing Even when the best are falling The best are falling, the best are falling
