Wei Ying and self-worth issues..really?
I am really shocked and very tired of seeing so many fics in ao3 with tags related to Wei Ying’s self worth issues! Where on earth people got this idea? Wei Ying has always been confident about himself and skills (and no, that is not arrogance).
Wei Ying was very pragmatic. He knew how the society worked with all its flawed logic and stupid social hierarchies. He was realist enough to know how he would be treated just because of his birth origin. But he never once felt ashamed of his status as “son of a servant” as many would mock him. He felt no shame in being a servant’s son because he has confidence in himself and he knew himself well enough. Expecting and knowing how the society would perceive him and how they would treat him just because of his origin does not relate to him having self worth issues.
If he had any self-doubts, he would not call himself as Lan Zhan’s equal, a sect heir of a great clan, while being  a “mere son of servant”.
I am looking at you, “The Untamed” for giving a bad representation and incorrect image of our brilliant Wei Ying.

Jiang Cheng’s callous nature
The very first time Jiang Cheng enters the novel you are shown his disregard to lives and his casual cruelty. He whips Mo Xuanyu and when it does not give the expected result, he wants to capture him and take him away, probably to torture and kill him like he did in the past 13 years. And he is baffled and angry that a person as esteemed as Hanguang-Jun would protect a “nobody”. Forget the fact that it was Wei Ying. I do not think Lan Wangji would let an innocent man to be captured in front of him.  Jiang Cheng does not understand kindness at all.  He treats people who are supposed to be beneath him in social hierarchy with disdain. For him, such people do not have any value and hence not worthy to be protected. He perceives any instance of kindness as “showing off” or “being a hero”.
His ability is only limited to killing people with weak background. He conveniently does not bother with Xue Yang because Jin sect is behind him. He is just a bully who can only show his prowess in front of the weak, but cowers in front of people powerful than him, powerful in terms of cultivation or in terms of status.

Why change the villainous characters?
There is a movie in my country, “Sholay”, which is a cult classic. This movie is famous for its villain. People may not remember the protagonists, but everyone knows the villain. He is one of the most iconic villains in our movie history.  The reason I am bringing this up is because no one who is a fan of this villainous character want to change him in anyway, or give a sob back story, or say that he is a misunderstood person. He is a villain and people like that about him.
You can like villainous characters. You can like antagonists. You can like a bratty and a selfish character. But like them for who they are.  Celebrate the villainy. No need to give justifications for liking an antagonist by making them a misunderstood hero, give them some non-existent trauma, or make them victims. Or even if they have a childhood trauma, they are still antagonists.
Isn’t it interesting to see the parallels between Lan Zhan and JC, and their relationship with Wei Ying? Isn’t it interesting to see the parallel between Wei Ying and JGY? One who is a “son of a servant” and one who is a “son of prostitute”. Both abused for their status. Why make JC and JGY as some good people who were forced to to do bad?

I actually love the way Lan Wangji doesn't pursue Wei Wuxian when they meet again(?)
He's ready to play with him, to one up him in his own games and surprise Wei Wuxian that he's playing along at all. I think that's what picking him up was, and getting him into bed, and all that back and forth they had. Wangxian both like to tease. But Lan Wangji's side always feels like he's trying a little less to flirt and I see why some people would be disappointed with that, but I really like it.
It makes sense why he'd think Wei Wuxian wouldn't reciprocate his feelings and they had so many communication problems in his past life, it comes across to me as Lan Wangji just wanting to be there for him this time, as a friend or in whichever other way Wei Wuxian will take him. Romance is the ideal of course but not the requirement. It's a very selfless type of love, where he just wants Wei Wuxian safe and happy, and being there for him at all seems to come as a bonus that has Lan Wangji really really happy regardless or how much of that he gets.
Which also seems to comfort Wei Wuxian, that Lan Wangji has no ulterior motives keeping him by his side, he just likes him and wants to be there, that's all. As he slowly opens up to the idea of them being together, you get to see Lan Wangji respond, because he does want this if he can have it, but one of the most important parts of getting here is that he wasn't pushing for it. He was there giving himself and his love for Wei Wuxian without asking for anything back, and in turn Wei Wuxian fell (deeper) in love with him.
They're so sweet 🥺

I've been wanting to write a meta about this for a while (I will eventually!) but I've been sort of low energy, so it'll have to be rambly posts instead for now...

Lan Zhan is a sweetheart!!
Every time Lan Zhan says “I am here” to Wei Ying, it warms my heart! There is a certain gravitas to his being when he says that.
As though even the smallest of Wei Ying’s needs is worthy of his consideration.
Even the simplest of Wei Ying’s wishes is worthy of his devotion.
No wonder we all fell in love with our Hanguang-Jun just like Wei Ying.

Lan Zhan and Wei Ying: Two people who rose above the world
“I alone could not change the world….but the world could not change me either…”
                  - Bad Buddy
Why am I quoting Bad Buddy for MDZS? Because this quote fits our Wei Ying and Lan Zhan perfectly. Yes, they could not change the cultivation world and its hypocrisy and classism and everything that is wrong.  But they did not let the cultivation change who they are either. They always lived their lives with their principles and morals. But their journey started at two extreme ends of the spectrum that is society.
Wei Ying is a realist and very pragmatic. Wei Ying grew up in the streets. He probably saw all the depravity and the darkness the world had to offer. Later, he came to understand how people perceived him based on his servant class rather than who he was as a person. And yet, he retained his heart. He retained his kindness. He did not let circumstances change his soul. He overcame the shackles that society put on him and rose above everyone else. And this was probably why he was not very keen on these so called rules of the gentry sects. Because he had seen through the masks. He was ready to live without a golden core. But he was not ready to lead a life without his principles. A life without his morals would be a true death to Wei Ying.
[A perfect parallel here would be Meng Yao. He let his experiences change him into the very thing he probably hated once upon a time. In order to overcome his circumstances, he became “them”.]
Lan Zhan is an idealist. Lan Zhan grew up in the mountains, above the clouds. Rules were what structured his morality once. Or rather, he could not differentiate between those two. He probably did not understand the superficial righteousness of the cultivation world. That is why he could not understand that Wei Ying, a person who does not follow the rules, who is seemingly frivolous, and irreverent could be righteous. It took one war and one Wei Ying to understand that there is no utopia. And yet, he did not let this betrayal of his beliefs change him. He did not go into “seclusion”. He did not run away from reality. He rose above everything and everyone. He found conviction and belief in his own morality rather than depend on a set of rules to tell him what morality is. He is, in spirit, the truest of the Lans.
[A perfect parallel here would be Lan Xichen. Unlike Lan Zhan, he let the rules guide his morality. He would rather hide than face reality. He would rather go into “seclusion” than help change the world. He could not change the past. But he could change the future for the better. A complete opposite of Lan Zhan. Hanguang Jun could not change the past. But he did try to change the future. He showed the world what a true cultivator is. He nurtured young minds like Lan Yuan and Lan Jingyi.]
And this is why they are true equals. Their equality does not just stem from their skills, but also who they are at their very soul.
