Sherlock Holmes is the funniest case of “doomed by the narrative” ever. Doomed by the narrative and destined to die young bc the creator hated him, and then the fans literally bullied him into un-dooming the narrative, writing about him for another thirty years, and giving the character a canonical happy ending where he retires to the countryside and keeps bees. Funniest shit ever.

Main character who's new in town meets the future best friend, but they're a full on conspiracy theorist so the obligatory tour is really informative but also a bit strange

I just binged through the entirety of @contact-guy 's wonderful webcomic "Watson's sketchbook" and the character designs inspired a few doodles:

personal hc that holmes notices watson's reclining eyesight first but watson refuses to get reading glasses for a pretty long time (because he's afraid of being an old man) until he finally puts his ego aside, because holmes still makes him read letters and articles out loud and it's kind of embarrassing to keep stumbling over the words.

My favourite trope (that I possibly made up) is awkward friends. When two characters who have been rivals for so long don't know how to act now that they are on the same side - one will ask if they wanna hangout but be super awkward about it, so the other will be even more awkward. But miraculously they will somehow make plans and have the time of their lives and be cute n shit (they will not learn from this. they will be awkward forever)
#popped up in my head while I was thinking about which dynamic I prefer for sonadow#I think I like them more platonic#sonic has invaded my brain I'm sorry#writing#tropes#rivals to friends#fanfic tropes#writing tropes#character dynamics

Watching people get catty at each other about the “Sherlock Holmes is gay” vs “Sherlock Holmes is aroace” thing is so weird cus I’ve seen it happen multiple times (STILL. How are some of you still having this conversation) and it’s like. you guys are arguing because you’re allergic to nuance. like first of all he’s a detective with a silly pipe from a book written p 200 years ago and hopefully we can all step back and acknowledge how silly it is to fight over that right? right???????
second of all you people guys understand that people are capable of being both and by limiting yourself to specific language (especially when talking about a character that existed way WAY before the language in question was in use) is going to flatten some of the discussion around it, especially when you’re talking about something as nuanced as love, attraction, friendship, relationships, ext and especially when you’re insisting that your reading is the only correct reading. You guys understand that you cannot look at a character written so long ago through your modern eyes and expect it to be perfectly one to one with our modern understanding of sexuality? and that writing from the Victorian age isnt exactly going to be very open about if a character is queer at all and is going to couch their language in plausible deniability and ext? You understand that things that read as one thing 200 years ago will no longer read the same now?
third, the reason Sherlock Holmes reads as so queer is because of his refusal to get married, his active disinterest in women and his general tendency to upend social norms, right? Like that’s an inherently very queer, especially from a character from the 18 hundreds, right? some of the stuff would have read as very gay to the audience then and it still reads as pretty gay today (like, for example, Holmes’ very close relationship with Watson, then taking that holiday the year of the Oscar Wilde trial, Holmes not exactly fitting into the stereotypical masculine role that Victorian English society expected him to fill) and some of that stuff is going to read as aroace (Holmes not seeming very interested in romance and marriage in general and his active refusal to partake) But in general these are both things that help read Holmes as very not straight. Maybe he was written as scorning marriage because it was literally the 18 hundreds and being married meant being married to a woman specifically, maybe he doesn’t like the idea of romance in general, bottom line it’s very not straight of him. we can all agree on that. the moment we stop pulling at him like children fighting over a toy we’ll be a happier fandom. He’s literally one of the most well adapted characters of all time and he’s in the public domain now, I promise we can share him.
and finally. you guys do know that he could be both, right? and I mean that both in the sense of like, accepting multiple readings at once though that’s important to but also like it’s entirely plausible for a person to be both gay and aroace. because yk. spectrum? feelings around romance, sex, marriage, ext are complicated and sometimes you can’t fit it into one neatly packaged label. it does not always have to be one or the other.
and that’s not even getting into the way some of you guys are just yelling at each other because you feel angry someone would dare interpret your blorbo in a different way than you. some of you guys are just awful to each other for the sake of being awful

thinking about how Granada Sherlock Holmes is a mostly 1 to 1 text to screen adaptation of ACD’s works BUT they decided to add in a bit to the Reichenbach fall where Holmes takes a moment to watch his husband friend scream his name and be sad about his death and even considers revealing to him that he’s alive before stopping himself because he knows he has an important mission ahead of him and he can’t risk it, so he just sits there and soaks in one more minute with his Watson with tears in his eyes will someone pls sedate me
