How was Maddy's outfit at the carnival inappropriate?

I’d say that its about the context, rather than my view of whether what she’s wearing is nice or not (like the bra, hate the pants). Carnivals are designed as family events and for children. And Maddy is dressed in clothing designed for going to a club: Extremely sexual, skin tight, and probably not very comfortable.  

In the same way that if I wore pyjama’s to work that would be inappropriate attire. If I wore a suit to go camping that would be inappropriate. And you can’t walk around naked down the street, but sure as hell I walk around naked in my home.

But she knows that that outfit is going to rile Nate up, and uses it as a weapon, so from my point of view it was an entirely strategic move of hers to cause a scene.

Unpopular Opinion: Maddy is also complicit in her toxic relationship.

I’m just gonna put this out there. There’s like, no excuse for what Nate did. ZERO. Nate is seriously unhinged, and choking Maddy was 100% wrong. 

What I find frustrating though, is that the show constantly paints Maddy as an innocent victim of circumstance and of an abusive relationship, without acknowledging the ways in which she is abusive towards Nate. Their relationship is toxic because they are both assholes who abuse each other, but use different weapons to do so. Both Maddy and Nate use control as a means of abuse. The main difference between the two is that Nate crosses into the physical abuse territory (again, no justification for this behaviour), whereas Maddy uses psychological manipulation, sex and lies as her main tools. 

They both severely lack honesty and communication skills. Nate’s is pretty explanatory and the show dives into his flaws and critiques them, whereas it kind of pushes Maddy’s aside or never addresses them, and that’s what I briefly want to discuss as to why I think she’s complicit in her relationships toxicity. 

In episode 1, she has sex with a stranger in front of everyone in the pool, to intentionally hurt and punish Nate. Aside from my personal distaste in her lack of self respect to do something like this, this move makes clear that Maddy will use sex as a weapon to hurt others. 

Then, in episode 2, her pool sex doesn’t get her the result she wanted, so she lies about it and pretends to have blacked out and not consented, implying that she was raped. This then leads to an innocent man getting beaten bloody by Nate (sure, it’s on him for doing the beating, but he would not have been there had she not manipulated him into thinking the guy raped her). This shows a disgusting lack of morals and blatant manipulation, and yet the show skirts across it and there are no consequences for Maddy.

She then invades Nate’s privacy by going through his phone, and jumps to conclusions about what she finds. It also gets revealed that she often goes through peoples phones to get the upper hand. This is an extremely abusive and controlling thing to do but again, she gets off scott free (whereas a guy wouldn’t), and gets to head on a revenge plot path. She  intentionally wears an inappropriate outfit to the carnival with the intent to humiliate Nate in front of his family. She knows what she is doing will get him riled up, but wants a fight so she can bring out the dirty info she has on him to use against him. She then goes on to call his mum a cunt and embarrass Nate’s entire family. At this point, Nate crosses into physical abuse territory. I think her covering up for Nate isn’t just about Nate- it’s about her knowing that she also plays a role in their abusive relationship and not wanting to admit that what they have is messed up and they are both responsible for the environment they have both created. 

It’s also noted in the latest episode, that Maddy cheats often, and that she uses sex and emotional manipulation to control Nate and get whatever she wants. Sure, Rue narrates that they were on breaks when she was screwing other guys, but if that was the case then the line “she struggles with monogamy” wouldn’t have been needed, and Rue is proven to not be a reliable narrator at this point and she’s probably using it to justify Maddy’s behaviour because she doesn’t want to slut shame her.

My point of all of this, is that Maddy is a god awful person, who is toxic and abusive in her relationship, and yet the show paints the abusive relationship in a very black and white way of Maddy is the victim and Nate is the assailant. If Maddy’s past and background is allowed to be used to justify her disgusting behaviour, then why isn’t Nates? I hope that come future episodes, that Maddy gets pulled up on her behaviour, especially the fake rape scenario that she created. Instead of painting women as victims and men as monsters, the show has a unique opportunity to call out everyone’s behaviour and recognise the grey areas.

Just rewatching the entire series, and it’s dawned on me that this quote is actually from the very first two episodes, and is reused at the end. It is such a phenomenal monologue. Holy moly this show is just incredible.

Destiny is a gift. Some go their entire lives, living existence as a quiet desperation. Never learning the truth that what feels as though a burden pushing down upon our shoulders, is actually, a sense of purpose that lifts us to greater heights. Never forget that fear is but the precursor to valour, that to strive and triumph in the face of fear, is what is means to be a hero. Don’t think. Become!

What an amazing weekend. My highlight was meeting this phenomenal woman, @carren_smith. Before the wellness couch summit I didn't know who Carren was, you may not either. In a very brief summary, Carren has been through the ringer. After losing her partner to suicide and considering suicide herself as her only alternative to coping with the loss, she went on a girls trip with 2 friends only to be blown up in the Bali bombings, her face and top of her head crush and blown off, and both her friends killed in the process. Yet she had taken that loss, grief and pain and found spiritual and emotional enlightenment beyond emotions and thoughts. I was in awe and felt emotionally kicked in the face and had to hold back my tears but not from a perspective of sadness, but one of enlightenment. Thanks Carren for the chat and big hug and to the wellness guys for giving all of us an opportunity to grow and swim our own races. #wellnesssummit16 #enlightenment #inspiration #whoamibeforethethought?
