One of my best friends works on art for a ttrpg company (Dragon Sol) and they are in a competition to be featured in a showcase! They're in the running with Races, Chases, and Standoffs which is actually really cool and seems to be compatible with a lot of ttrpg systems. So hypothetically, you know in star trek how people can get beamed from one location to another? if i beamed you across the head with a baseball bat and you teleported to a different locations, would those molecules still be you? Someone, help my man the semicolon win.

Look, look, I hear you all. The emdash is an amazing punctuation mark. It's versatile, it's snappy. In many ways it defies conventional grammar for a more colloquial and genuine voice. I love the emdash, and if this were a poll on the best or the coolest punctuation, it would have my vote.

But here, we are talking about the sexiest. The emdash is common, overused. The semicolon requires skill. If we're talking sex, the emdash has the tools but is too focused on it's own pleasure. The emdash is rough, when it should be gentle, and cares little for foreplay. The semicolon takes its time. It's clever in it's movements, brushing up just right as to not overstimulate.

Besides, do you really want the punctuation mark that would stop midway through sex because it remembered its duolingo, or do you want the punctuation who would finish what it started first before making its way to the owl.

Vote semicolon.

my favorite character to write dialogue for is like. a dead even tie between forsyth and python, and i think that’s because my favorite dialogue to write is the banter between the two of them. they’re both so distinct—forsyth is high-strung and slightly over-formal while python is snarky and colloquial. i’m attaching a few of my favorite banters from my ghost fic, Laid to Rest, to show what i’m talking about because AUGHH THEMMM

not only do they banter delightfully, i have a ton of fun bringing their distinct voices through in narration! i had a harder time finding examples for this because it’s less quippy, but i wanted to show it off a bit because it’s one of my favorite things about writing these guys

THE INFAMOUS JOURNAL!!!

i got this thing in a bookstore giftshop and it has singlehandedly turned me back to writing on paper & been responsible for several fics getting done. tour under the cut

this is the very first page!!!! it’s where i wrote down the idea for Lucky, which occupies the next ten or so pages for the full draft

these are the index cards that live in the book. luckily it’s pretty good at keeping the index cards in because i tow this thing everywhere! i scribble down quick ideas on the nearest piece of paper if my notebook isn’t available and then they get tucked into the notebook

this is the page that’s most offensively over filled with text because i wanted to fit it all on one page (left and right are unrelated fics)

and THIS IS HOW MANY PAGES I HAVE LEFT!! i’ve never filled a notebook cover to cover before and i am EXCITED!!!!!

This is exactly the yap I was wanting. Whenever me or my beta start a fic, it usually results in us breaking down each other's door to talk about like the architecture of medieval castles, or like, epistomology, so this is exactly what I was looking for. Fic research is one of my favorite things.

Using music as a method of pacing is such a cool way to go about things and it shows in the fic. I also just love getting to hear people info dump so this. Very tasty. Please, tell me more about Russian music and nationalism.

I know for your current fic, one of the cool parts is you using your music knowledge for the AU. How do you go about research in general and deciding which real-life musicians and songs equate to their Jayvik counterparts?

Hello!! Thank you so much for the ask. I hope you're prepared for the absolutely Biblical yap session you've inspired. I've been chewing on this for hours. I hope that somewhere in this yap I answer the thesis of your question because I'm pretty sure I've talked around it.

The short answer? Chaos and listening until something hopefully sticks.

The long answer:

A lot of my general ideas and vibes came from like general Music History knowledge from college, as well as having also taught high school Music History.

So I knew from the beginning that I wanted the piece they created to either be based on something from the Romantic Period (19th Century) because it's characterized by really emotional and programmatic pieces OR something like VERY contemporary. Early ideas were something from Bartok or Stravinsky. I particularly like Russian composers from the Late Romantic just as a general rule. (During this time, nationalism became a Thing(TM), even in music and national song styles happened. The Russians cooked every time. So much hidden political protesting in their music.) I also really love Rachmaninoff but wasn't super familiar with him beyond his really famous works (both of his piano concertos).

This is all a really long way to lead me to how I got here. I did some Googling, like any good researcher, and found a couple reddit posts with some links in the r/ClassicalMusic community. I did a lot of listening. At this point, I was going into PYETM with a dream and some Vibes, and really, it was the vibes that spoke to me here, and it's how I settled on the Rach Cello Sonata.

I listened to a couple different recordings at this point. These were also suggestions from several Reddit posts/Google searches to give me a head start. Even if the music is the same, the expression is different performer to performer, and it's really the music that started to develop the plot rather than the other way around. I heard the way the conversations between the piano and the cello developed throughout the Sonata have shaped so much of the plot arc and pacing. Every thing from the minor-minor-Major-Major movement cycle to the antagonism and longing.

I have listened to the pieces in this fic .... too many times to count. The first several times, I just approached it as taking notes about my own thoughts and reactions. I really treated it like college, where I was analyzing pieces. Just so many so many hand written notes.

Then, I found this really great article to supplement my own opinions and also just to double-check myself, which pointed me in the direction of some of the descriptions I used. I really like that it was written by someone that isn't necessarily a professional musician, and the lay-people terminology helped me bring it to life in a way that (I hope) is accessible to people who aren't necessarily musicians either.

The rest of the music featured, like the guitar piece and the Brahms and the Bossa Nova vibe session, followed pretty much the same process. Lots of deep dives into classical music and latin/latin jazz music communities and listening to various pieces until one stuck out and I got that "lightbulb" moment, followed by double-checking my work with Wikis or articles as available.

I hope this has answered your question and that this information has actually been interesting. I could yap about the background work for this fic forever.

FFWF! hand over your favorite pun, wordplay, or creative analogy from the n body problem

This in an evil return for my ask, and you know it.

In many ways, the title itself "The N-Body Problem" is a creative analogy. One of the main themes that run through the N-Body Problem is one's sense of self and identity. It's sort of a thesis throughout the fic; how do you deal with the fact that you are no longer yourself, and that you likely never will be.

The n-body problem is a good analogy for what they're going through. When it comes to gravity, if you have 2 celestial objects orbiting each other, we can calculate where they'll be basically thousands of years in the future. This is what we call a two-body problem.

But if you put more factors, things get more chaotic. You can't predict where things will end because similar to the butterfly effect, a small tug could create drastically different results. This does a good job of simulating a 3-body problem. But this is the point of the fic! In a system where you can't control every factor, or know where things will end? What do you do? How do you cope?

Metaphors

Beyond that, chaos theory, fractals, and astronomy, often find their ways into my work. I'm a fractal nerd, so any chance I have to shove a fractal into my work, I'm going to. My beta knows this, as I have ran up to him to show him pictures of fractals. I'm very normal.

I also feel like I'm probably obligated to give my beta some wordplay that he hasn't seen yet. Sooooooo... have an unedited paragraph.

I started crying today at the museum because they had reconstructed the shoes of Otzi the iceman.

Either he or someone he knew who cared about him made these shoes out of grass and bear skin and twine and he was wearing them when he died over five thousand years ago.

And a Czech researcher and his students did reconstructions of these shoes and wore them to the same place where he died to test them out and they were like yep! These shoes are really cozy and comfy and didn’t give us blisters while hiking!

Is that not just the coolest shit ever????

I'm currently writing jayvik fanfiction, working on more jayvik art, and I'm painting a 3D model of Jayce.

The worms will not let me work on one thing at a time. The infestation in my mind is something. Like LOOK AT THIS SHIT.
