the weird, kinky writers that write gross icky stuff you don’t like to read are the backbone of fandom. There are many, many fanfiction sites. You could go to what’s left of fanfiction.net or wattpad, but you don’t.

The only significant difference between the three is that ff.net and wattpad adopted censorship policies, and ao3 didn’t. Thats a big part of the reason ao3 is still the biggest fanfiction site out there. You could go and read on those platforms, but you deliberately choose not to, because they’re husks of what they could be, because everyone abandoned them. And so ff.net and wattpad have a reputation for having worse fics, and they do, but it’s not arbitrary. It’s because they killed the bottom level of the food chain in the fanfiction ecosystem and decimated their population.

Like it or not, that will happen again if you prosecute people for dark content. No one is saying murder in fics is bad now, but that’s the next thing to go after the incest, rape fantasies, and the entire ‘safe, sane, and consensual’ tag. And then all the queer ships. Don’t like don’t read is the backbone of actual fandom culture. Do not forget our history.

By the by, it's a good idea anyways, but now is the time to start downloading all your favourite fics on AO3. Because even if various censorship and copyright laws that would go after them don't pass, people will still start deleting their writing out of fear of harm.
