6 Reasons why you will never speak a foreign language fluently
Tumblr media
While recent studies emphasize a great number of benefits of learning a new language, only a small number of people actually speak two or more languages.
Research by the US Census has shown, that only 1% of language students can engage in a conversation in a foreign language after leaving college.
Equal percentages apply to language learners in Latin America and Asia. When you think of the benefits multilingualism has to offer, don’t only consider new career opportunities. Speaking more than one language has also proven to have an immense influence on the brain, as it may prevent or delay brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia, while it will also help you to learn anything faster, not just languages, as your brain will learn to adapt to and process new tasks.
Imagine traveling to a foreign country and meeting some native speakers you want to connect with. You may probably have a decent conversation in English, however, if you could communicate with them in their native tongue, studies have shown that locals are more welcoming and comfortable than when having to speak in a language foreign to them. For example, you may get an invitation to share some paella with your new Spanish friends. This way you could experience a whole new way of travel, and it will also boost your confidence knowing you can simply speak to anyone you meet, without having to worry about whether or not they speak English. Wouldn’t that be great?
Now, even though you are motivated to learn a foreign language, you might still encounter some problems when trying to get fluent. Here are the main 6 reasons why:
#1 You don’t start speaking
If you regularly find excuses for not learning a language like “I simply don’t have the time” or “Language learning costs a lot of money”, then you have your first reason right there. A lack of time or money are no valid excuses for not learning or speaking a language, as there are so many possibilities of free language learning, like video tutorials or basic grammar or vocabulary exercises. Try to take a little time every day to watch a video tutorial on the foreign language of your choice and you will see your language skills improving day by day.
Experts say another reason many people hesitate speaking a new language is that of a lack of confidence. Many people believe that they won’t be able to do it and this is what keeps them from trying at all. Online learning tutorials and tools can prove useful in the early learning stages, as they can give you the confidence to have basic conversations with native speakers, the most crucial first step in learning a language. Don’t be afraid to take risks or make mistakes, most native speakers are more patient and understanding than you might think.
Nowadays, with a vast number of offers for language learning, not only classroom learning, but online as well, there is possibly an offer for everyone out there. So stop finding excuses and start finding a way to make it happen.
#2 You’re not getting involved with the language you want to speak fluently
The best way to get started, without actually having to speak to a person from the very beginning is training your grammar and vocabulary by doing things you probably already love doing. Like watching movies or TV shows on the internet. Try switching the language settings to the language you are learning and activate the subtitles in this language so you can see the words as they are written as well. You can also do this on your phone to be confronted with using the language every day.
Even though it might seem like a tedious task to learn all the words of a language, you have to remember that vocabulary forms the basis of every language. In addition to watching movies or TV shows, you can activate your vocabulary learning skills by reading newspapers or books or listening to the radio in the foreign language you are learning. It is also important that you start speaking to people at an early stage of your language learning experience and to converse with native speakers regularly.
#3 You’re not interacting enough with native speakers
In order to converse with native speakers on a regular basis, you have to find the perfect way for you to feel comfortable and improve your speaking skills. A good way to do so is to find a tandem partner or speak to native speakers over Skype or at a local language learning club. You may find tandem partners over various internet platforms like TandemPartners.
"Language learning is language use, and in the end, the highest saying if the speaking skill is encouraged." Dominik Rumlich Professor at the University of Paderborn, Germany.
Please be aware that a tandem partnership is also about teaching the other person your native language, not only about receiving language skills from them. This may also be a great way to get some experience in teaching a language.
#4 You don’t have a specific goal for speaking your target language
To learn to speak a language fluently, you have to set a specific, achievable goal for yourself. It will be easier if you start by setting small goals first, leading up to the final goal of being fluent in your target language. For example, you could aim for having a short conversation in a grocery store at check out as your first goal, or asking someone on the street for directions. You will see that these short conversations will quickly become more comfortable for you so that you can focus on more extended interactions like starting a conversation in a bar or talking to a friend in your target language.
"It is especially important that from the very beginning, from the first 'Hello, I am' or `'Hello, how are you' you start speaking." Elke Höfler from the University of Graz, Austria.
#5 You’re not taking advantage of modern technology to help you become a fluent speaker
Nowadays, you have the advantage of being able to use a vast variety of technological language learning tools to help you improve your language speaking skills. However, these tools can’t help you become a better speaker of your target language if you don’t use them. As a smartphone user, you have a choice of various language learning apps, which can help you with becoming fluent more quickly. You should keep in mind that not all apps are built for speaking purposes so you should choose wisely which one is the best for your learning goal.
There are also some useful online language learning tools and aspiring start-ups on the market to help you learn and practice a language. If you want to focus on speaking a language, the new language learning website Magiclingua might be a great way to get started with your speaking skills.
Also, things I have mentioned before, like speaking to native speakers over Skype, setting your smartphone to your target language or watching movies in your target language, are useful technological tools to help you get accustomed with the new language and to be confronted with using it on a daily basis.
#6 You’re overthinking the speaking process
Once you get conversations in your target language up and running, try to not overthink the language process too much. Of course, you want to be understood and not make too many mistakes, but the most important thing is to just keep speaking and your conversation skills will get better in time. Also, if your conversation partner corrects you, don’t get discouraged. This is a normal reaction to hearing someone make a mistake. You would probably do the same in your native tongue, without meaning to be rude or make the other person feel bad. In addition, if somebody corrects you during a conversation and you apply the correction straight away, your brain will memorize what you have just learned better, than if you had learned it by heart from a textbook. Try to see every conversation as a new opportunity to improve your skills.
Now that you know which habits to avoid, what’s still keeping you from speaking a new language fluently? Get started now and experience yourself why it is so great to be able to speak a new language fluently.

Die 5-Killer-Tipps von Sprachexperten für Vokabeln lernen
Tumblr media
„It is not about how many language you speak, it’s about how much you love them“
