Question related to your last fic: When did this Sonic realise his feelings for Tails and how long did it take for him to accept them?

As much as I could give you a straight answer, this is one of those things where I prefer that the readers just make up their own scenarios or draw their own conclusions to fill in the gaps :)

convergent boundary was written on purpose to only focus on Tails' perspective, so I don't want to firmly state something that wasn't in the original text, if that makes sense.

That being said, we'll be seeing some of Sonic's thoughts on the matter during the sort-of sequel (which I hope to have ready by Valentine's!! It's going well so far). I hope that might suffice to give a better conclusion to this question.

Apologies that it took me a hot second to get to these questions, it always happens with headcanon asks... Between not having much time and the fact I end up overthinking my answers and wording a lot, I always delay the reply 🙇 Thank you for the patience!

How long did it take for Sonic to allow himself to drop the "cool guy" persona and be vulnerable around Tails?

If we're talking about videogame canon, I like picturing that around the events of Sonic 06 or Riders spinoff (which also came out in 2006), when they've already had plenty of adventures together that cover most of the classic timeline, is the "ideal" moment for Sonic to start being completely willing to be open with Tails.

The more time you spend with someone, the more likely it is that you inevitably feel more at ease with them, and by that point the two of them have been through plenty of risky situations. Their friendship and trust in the other has been solid since the start, but it's really only after Tails has his Adventure-era character development that I think Sonic would feel comfortable showing more of his true self around him, since Tails has shown him he can fully count on him when push comes to shove.

The change would be gradual at first, too! Before, Sonic would be this cool guy who is unfazed by hardships and just keeps pushing forward no matter what happens, his confident attitude being one of the many reasons Tails admired him.

But after Sonic switches gears, he'll outright admit to Tails he really needs his help to figure something out, he'd appreciate it if he came with him to X trip for the company, he's a bit worried about something etc... Just little things that show he's still the same cool and cocky hedgehog Tails loves, but that he has his own share of thoughts and shortcomings beneath that seemingly implacable hero personality.

Tails, in turn, would be really happy that Sonic is relying on him more, since that means he's earned his full respect! So he's more than happy with the dynamic slowly shifting :) and then by the time something like say, Sonic Colours happens, you can tell that the two of them have complete trust and faith in the other.

Of course, that's just how I personally like to imagine it haha. Even for other canons or AUs, I always picture their dynamic becoming more balanced and equal as something that ends up happening naturally with the passage of time.

Yes, I absolutely think Sonic is the kind of person who doesn't like getting sick and is just a little bit insufferable when he does catch something. Not really because he has to rely on someone else, but because he just dislikes sitting still and feeling like he can't do anything.

It's pretty normal not to want others to see you in your moments of weakness. That concept would apply to Tails as well, even though they've been together for a long time—maybe even precisely because of that, since Sonic would always rather not worry Tails and deal with the sickness on his own. He just knows his partner will pause whatever he's doing and do his best to take care of Sonic.

Then again, you can't exactly hide being sick/injured, and avoiding your best buddy 24/7 is hard and not even something he wants to be doing. He'd be pretty disappointed if the situations were reversed and Tails was hiding an illness or physical injury and didn't tell him anything, too!

So in the end, he'll just kinda have to allow Tails to nurse him to health. It's not the worst thing in the world, but he will be a bit reticent about it.

Tails is very conscious of how much Sonic values freedom and how being in this state sucks for him considerably more than for other people, though, which I think would go a long way for Sonic to grow comfortable with Tails being the one who tends to him whenever something happens.

What do Sonic and Tails like to do when they go on dates?

I like to imagine they're both the outdoor dates type. And they're both not picky at all, basically anything is fine as long as they do it together. Even doing races for fun sounds like a nice plan.

Sonic's ideal date is getting chillidogs and doing something fun and exciting, like visiting a town or checking out some cool festival, and Tails' is a romantic stroll somewhere with a nice view... I guess that to me they're very 'simple' people in that regard.

I also have to admit I have I'm not super creative with date ideas, which might be impairing the quality of this answer, but I do really think they're just the kind of people to have very easy needs and wants for romantic outings.

Do you think getting married would be a thing they would ever think about or are they happy enough just being together as boyfriends?

This one's a little funny, actually. I think both Sonic and Tails would easily agree to getting married if the other asked, but at the same time, I doubt either of them would ask for it ever HAHA.

It's just not something necessary in their relationship at all for them to feel happy and fulfilled. They've already decided to be together through thin and thick—calling them "boyfriends", "partners" or "husbands" doesn't change that notion, only the formal status of the dynamic. And, since they certainly don't care about that a whole lot, I don't see them thinking about tying the knot anytime soon.

If it was a thing they ended up wanting with the passage of years, for further sense of stability, perhaps the idea would come up. I've been thinking of it for a while but I can't really picture a specific scenario where it'd happen, though.

They essentially already live like a married couple most of the time, and there's something very sweet about a relationship that doesn't need a formal label to be completely heartfelt and committed. I feel that suits them to a T.

Looking at these, you can kind of tell I don't have very strong feelings about dates or marriage xD Still, I enjoyed sharing my perspective on it, thank you so much for the asks!

But either way always happy to answer sontails-related question, nothing to apologise for 😊 I got really motivated answering these haha, so long post incoming!

How do you think Sonic and Tails would choose to publicly reveal their relationship after they start dating?

For their friends: I think at the beginning they'd tell Amy and Knuckles, since they're the two they have shared more time and adventures with and it just feels right. Knuckles basically lives under a rock and won't tell anybody about it and Amy is gonna need some time to deal with the news, fair enough to inform them first, right?

...Or that's what they think. But Knuckles accidentally tells Rouge when she comes trying to steal emeralds and she's interested in the gossip, and Amy actually takes it surprisingly well (because she wants her friends to be happy first and foremost!) and also wants to spread the news.

So without them really making a proper announcement, the entire friend group ends up knowing that they're together now through osmosis. You know. Just the way it tends to happen in friend groups 😂 Even Eggman learns about it through hearsay.

Sonic and Tails did plan on letting everyone know eventually, so they're not even mad, honestly. It's like "oh, cool, you did our job for us!". The only ones left out of the loop are people like Silver and Blaze, who only pop in when certain circumstances require it, but they'll probably figure it out by themselves either way.

For the general public who knows them as heroes: I don't actually think they'd make any sort of announcement about it. It could cause misconceptions and for some people to look down on them, and frankly, they don't need to know about their private lives.

They don't bother behaving any different in public, of course, but they won't go out of their way to clarify the nature of their relationship, if that makes sense. The fellas they're rescuing don't need to know that :P

As I mentioned beforehand in a different ask, I've always liked imagining that Amy would find out about it before the official reveal (which is also why she can take it well when they come forth with the truth — she's had some time to deal with her feelings already).

She spends a lot of time with them and it becomes kinda hard to miss the way they're just super comfortable with each other, even more so than usual. There's not a doubt in her mind that she's right about them liking each other, she gets matters of the heart very well :'D

I honestly don't think anyone else would notice right away, though. Sonic and Tails being affectionate with each other and some happy blushing here and there is nothing new with the two of them, so it's tough to tell whether there's any difference or not.

In that sense, I do think they'd be surprisingly subtle, just because the way they'd act before and after being in a relationship isn't differing enough to cause any raised eyebrows or suspicion.

How long do you think it took for Sonic and Tails to get as comfortable with physical contact as they are now, especially with Tails' past of being bullied?

From the moment they meet, Sonic is a symbol of safety for Tails, so I actually don't see it taking a lot of effort from his side.

He doesn't go out of his way to be physically close to Sonic at first, even dreading it because of past experiences, but then things like a thunderstorm scaring Tails or Sonic grabbing his wrist as they run away from danger just happen, and he finds he has less issue with it than he thought.

Unlike every other time someone has put his hand on him, Sonic's touch is comforting and warm, and for someone who's wanted a friend to rely on all along, it's easier than expected to ease himself into it :')

If anything, I've always pictured Sonic being the most awkward of the two with touch. We're talking about a super fast hedgehog who has been working as solo hero until Tails starts sticking by his side — he doesn't seem to exactly have a lot of experience being physically affectionate with others.

Something about Tails just makes it easy to act that way with him, though, and he also eases himself into it before he consciously notices. It helps him as much as it helps Tails imo.

Ooh, I'm looking forward to all the prompts, love me some more Sontails fics! 😁 May I ask what parts of Sonic Frontiers left a bad taste in your mouth, exactly?

I hope you'll enjoy them when they're finished then :D

As for the Frontiers stuff, since it's mostly negativity, I'll put it under a read more just in case someone else stumbles upon this:

Gameplay wise, I had enough fun running around and trying to S rank the difficult cyberspace stages, like the ever memorable 1-2. I'm not very picky with gameplay, the Sonic storybook games that are known for notoriously messy controls are some of my favourites, so while it certainly isn't my favourite game in that aspect, I'm willing to give the formula a try in future installments. A more polished open world game could be really fun.

My main problem comes with the English story script. I just don't see the vision behind any of the character arcs our cast was given.

Amy wanting to 'share love with the world' is an extremely vague and flimsy goal—she has been doing that since the start, by showing her compassion and kindness to other characters and helping them (her arc with Gamma in SA1, Shadow in SA2, Silver and Elise in 06, helping Cream and Big look for Chocola and Froggy in Heroes, etc etc you get the point). So why does helping people suddenly sound like this grand, all-encompassing goal that would make her part ways with Sonic? While playing the game, frankly, I didn't even understand what was she talking about half the time.

Knuckles' resolution being that he needs to go out and see more of the world (or "live a little" as they put it) is also nonsensical to me, considering the past couple of games have... uh... already had him doing that when he was supposed to be guarding the Master Emerald. Again, I don't really understand what the growth was meant to be if they just reinforce what he was already doing.

And Tails staring at the camera and acknowledging his dubious characterisation of the 2010s with such a blatantly cheap line like "I'm wildly inconsistent!" is probably the worst offender. Not to mention the end conclusion being that he needs time away from Sonic to grow into his full potential—like he didn't, oh, I don't know, stop an entire tyrannical invasion in his homeland, all by himself, all the way back in Tails Adventure or something...

Note that I do say I have a problem with the /English/ script, because the Japanese one gives them arcs that fit much better for what their characters have been so far, imo.

As opposed to the vague, somewhat incoherent goals of the English version, Amy strives to be a better version of herself, Knuckles wishes to preserve the past and culture of his people, and Tails has renewed courage to do the things only he can do.

Those are in line with their personalities and actual directions I can see their characters going in, rather than Amy and Tails (who literally adore Sonic) deciding that nope, they need to be away from the guy that inspires them, and Knuckles being like "lmao the Master Emerald? What's that. YOLO".

Not to say the Japanese script is without flaws, because there's places where you can tell the dialogue doesn't fit the original intent (for better or worse) and Sonic's engrish is awkwardly absent, but aside from those glaring flaws, I found it much more personally satisfying than whatever Flynn was attempting.

I guess Frontiers ended up being a really sore spot for me because, for the reasonings stated above, I really don't want to see future games going with the plot lines given in the original script.

With 30 days of Sontails kind of being back, I'm curious which prompts you're looking forward to in the list?

Yes, we are absolutely back! Between writer's block and Frontiers leaving a sour taste in my mouth, I just somehow couldn't write about Sonic the way I wanted to—but you have no idea how happy I am to bring the series back now that I've made my peace with that x)

(For those of you who might not know what Flash and I are referring to, I'm writing 30 sontails fic prompts on AO3 following this list, so kindly refer to it if you want context.)

As for the prompts I'm looking more forward to, I picked the top 5 in chronological order:

Day 7: Gazing into each other's eyes

'They say the eyes are the mirror of the soul. So what happens when you look into familiar eyes and only meet a stranger?'

^ Actual very rough summary of the story I'm preparing for this prompt. Since this one hopefully shouldn't take a lot of time to be uploaded, I won't reveal more details, but it'll be angsty for both of them!

Day 14: Telling a secret

I have a perfect scene in mind, with Sonic and Tails stuck in a hellish escape room and needing to follow some pretty mortifying steps to get out. What's a better recipe for revelations and hurt/comfort than having to forcefully reveal a secret in a dire situation? ^^

Day 22: Staying up late

Something about the magic of those late hours between night and morning, when life comes to a standstill... I might make use of the day/night cycle in Frontiers to write a canon-divergent scene, since I'm not a fan of the English story direction and this would be a perfect spot for changes.

Day 27: Death

Despite writing plenty of non-angst stuff, I love tragedies for the powerful emotions they bring forth. Though I feel that for Sonic & Tails stories, one of them dying and the other suffering for it (or Cosmo dying, for the Sonic X crowd) has been done back-to-back, so let's just say I have something... different in mind.

Day 28: Missing memories

The topic of memories is always interesting to me because they make up so much of who you are, but it's something that can easily be toyed with, too. I'd been thinking of something Sonic 06 or Prime adjacent, with Tails either getting flashes of Sonic's death or getting memories from his other Shatterverse counterparts :)

...I think it's kinda telling that all the prompts I'm most looking forward to are angst xD But I also have lots of fun with the physical affection ones (namely thinking of 'Holding hands' and 'Cuddling' here) so it balances out.

This is a video I took from Bisan's page because I feel like this is important. Bisan, here talks about the second winter of this genocide and some of the important points are:

the rains have caused the sea level to rise and it has flooded the tents which were set up on the beach.

speaking of tents themselves- they do not preserve heat. It is not made to preserve heat and yet gazans have had to live in these shelters for over a year

last November there still were shops; there were means of production, however little, to produce clothes, coats, and blankets that could keep people from freezing...right now there is nothing as every inch of the Gaza Strip has been carpet bombed.

Israel has blocked life sustaining supplies and fuel like coal and wood have started to run out: it is becoming impossible for people keep warm.

I don't have much to say anymore and can only request you to keep your eyes on Gaza. Gazans are struggling to survive and right now every little donation can go a long way into sustaining life. My friend, Siraj Abudayeh ( @siraj2024 ) has been struggling too and while his tent was not washed away in the waves, it did drown because of the destruction of sewage wells. He hopes that if not all, he can at least help some of the most vulnerable members of his family by continuing to rent a shelter. However since his old campaign was abruptly shut down by gofundme, he lost a lot of money and right now he can no longer afford the shelter.
