I have already written about Achilles' waiting, but what about Patroclus' willpower?
He continued to meet Achilles even though he knew he was the prince and he was an exile. He continued to stand by Achilles despite Thetis' threats. He ran after Achilles when he went with Chiron to train, determined not to stop running until he caught up with them. He begged Peleus to reveal Achilles' location and then sailed to Skyros to meet him. He followed him and the rest of the Myrmidons to the Trojan War. He followed him onto the battlefield and through the years there. He continued to wait for him every day in his tent to see him return from battle. He stood by his side after the conflict with Agamemnon. He stood by his side until he saw how Achilles was consumed by his self-centredness. Only then did he abandon him and beg him to fight for them again, as Patroclus had done since he met him.
Although he is not the "fighting" part (apparently), since that is what Achilles is supposed to be, Patroclus fights in another way. He never has things easy, unlike Achilles who is loved, respected and accepted by everyone; Patroclus has to fight against everything and everyone to be by the side of the one he loves. Patroclus is the tireless willpower that moves the soul to fight for what it believes in or loves. Likewise, Patroclus represents the part of the soul that is always searching for its other half.
That is why Patroclus, as he claimed, followed Achilles until after his death.

𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝑰 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 (HTTYD2)
Explanation on why the 💞"𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝑰 𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖"💞 scene is so important in How To Train Your Dragon 2 (HTTYD2) by Dreamworks.
Tumblr media
Valka at the beginning of HTTYD2
Let's start by talking about Valka.
Throughout the film, it is explained how in the past she felt uncomfortable and strange in the human world, as its static norms clashed with her ideals, which is why she ends up abandoning her family.
So she achieves his dream of living in peace and harmony with the dragons, learning everything from them. However, she has paid the price of giving up her "human side" and with it her family.
That she chose to live among dragons rather than remain with her own reveals two things: Confidence and courage in pursuing her dream, but also her fear and lack of trust in others.
She does not feel supported and listened to by her people, but neither does Stoick. She feels caged, so when she gets the chance, she escapes.
Tumblr media
The fact that Valka renounces her family is also a reflection of the problems within their marriage. Valka and Stoick had opposing beliefs towards dragons, which would obviously create fights and reinforce Valka's idea that this was not her place. Furthermore, this shows that Valka was extremely afraid of being rejected by Stoick for who she really was, and that this probably led her to show herself to him in a way that she was not in order to protect herself. Not to mention that, being seen as an outcast in Mema for opposing the war and that her love of dragons almost killed her family, she believed she was protecting her son.
Thus, at the beginning of HTTYD2 we find a strong and confident Valka within the world of dragons, but very distrustful and distanced from the world of humans. This is reinforced at the beginning when she walks crouching, imitating the dragons.
Tumblr media
Later on, once she establishes a bond with Hiccup through the dragons (but note: through the dragons, not because he is her child. Although this changes later on), she begins to walk upright and behave in a more "human" way.
Meeting with Stoick
Valka's real growth comes when she and Stoick meet again.
It is amazing how Valka crumbles in a few seconds. She goes from a powerful woman who believes in herself to a frightened person, full of remorse and anguish.
After meeting Hiccup, she regrets abandoning them. She regrets choosing the easy way out, but as she says: "Well, what sign did I have that you could change, Stoick? That anyone in Mema could do it? Did anyone listen to me?".
Her body language shows that she is extremely afraid (she backs away until she hits the wall), showing once again the fear she has of being rejected by Stoic, the person she loves, and whom she has to finally confront.
Tumblr media
It's funny how Valka is unable to understand his reaction. Anyone else would be filled with anger and frustration, but Stoic's response is ✨sublime✨. He says nothing until he is at her level, while she says everything on the verge of tears. Then he strokes her cheek and says, "You are as beautiful as the day I lost you."
Tumblr media
FRIENDS, are you aware of what a LOVE DECLARATION this man makes? This man has told her: Everything is fine. I accept and understand your decisions, even though they were not the best. I forgive you and I love you💞.
I think Valka cries not only from the stress and emotion of the whole situation, but also that she finally sees that her husband accepts her for who she is and loves her that way.
💞💚💜✨THIS MOMENT IS PERFECT✨💜💚💞.
Tumblr media
Little by little, Valka opens up to her human side, which she had repressed, while Stoick supports her in her development with small gestures (this is especially noticeable in their body language). In this way, Valka realises that she had made a mistake. Everyone can change, even her.
In conclusion, Valka from this moment onwards will begin to understand that her family does not make her more vulnerable, that her quirks are impossible to accept or unforgivable. That is why she wants to return to Mema happy to be reunited with her people and family and, therefore, happy to be reunited with her human side.

What do you think of this scene?
I hope you liked the analysis✨.

Dante's "song of exile": the mention of Gemma Donati
Biographical mentions in medieval poetry were extremely rare, and usually not accepted by the norm. Do you think that Dante Alighieri gives a damn? You are right. He does not.
With this premise, it is not so strange to see him mention a sister who helps him while ill and even his wife. Because yes, there is an instance in which Dante mentions Gemma Donati in his poetry. I mean, we always read of Beatrice, we all know Beatrice, the Vita Nova is written in her honour, she is theology personified in the Comedy, but what about Gemma Donati, what about his wife?
My honoured guests, here comes the song Tre donne intorno al cor mi son venute (may heaven forgive my translation, but more or less literally it means “three women came around my heart”), from the Rime. (Read it here in Italian, I sadly couldn’t find an English translation.)
This is a song known as the song of exile, because it’s in fact written while Dante is banished from Florence. He has tried to go back in the city with the entirety of the White Guelphs and failed. He has tried with a personal and private plead, which is more or less ignored. His very last resource is to turn to Corso Donati himself. True, he was the head of the opposite party (although in that moment, around 1306, there were internal issues even within the party of the Black Guelphs, because you can always trust the Florentines to turn against themselves where there’s no one left to fight), but he also was the third cousin of Dante’s own wife, who had been readmitted in the city that very year. The song, by consequence, mentions the family ties.
E se non che de li occhi miei ’l bel segno per lontananza m’è tolto dal viso, che m’have in foco miso, lieve mi conterei ciò che m’è grave. vv. 81-84
More or less: “And if not for the fact that the beautiful object of my gazes, which has immersed me in the fire of passion, is taken away from my sight because of distance, I would consider easy to bear what is unbearable.”
Marco Santagata adds:
It could be objected that this is the only lyrical work of the first centuries in which not only a poet talks about his wife, but also talks about her with the words that poetry reserves to passion of love. It is true, in ancient literature love declarations to a wife appear truly exceptional, and such this one remains, even considering how exploitative it is. It should not be forgotten that Dante himself is exceptional. […] Such passion towards his wife probably appeared scandalous to whom, at the time, could correctly decipher his text […].
