22 June 2025 - A chapter of our love story beneath the yellow tree
The morning had started heavy with my unspoken frustrations. As the mist and frost clung to the hedgerows, I spent the morning in church beside you in silence, my heart weighed down by doubts I'd been carrying for weeks. Why was it taking so long? When would you be ready? The questions had been eating at me, making me wonder if I was asking for too much, if I was being unfair. When you suggested we go to Government House and then take a walk through the English Gardens, I thought nothing of it — though I did feel happy that you were trying your best to cheer me up. Part of me also did feel guilty for the impatience I'd been harbouring against you, and also you had your worries floating in your mind (the coolant in your car had evaporated! Timely.)
As we rounded the corner past the green hedges of the gardens, I was still lost in my morning melancholy, barely paying attention as you walked to the back of the car. Then you gestured to the boot and popped open the boot with a grin I hadn't seen all morning.
"Surprise!" you said, gesturing to the treasure trove hidden inside—checkered blanket, our orange Le Creuset recycle bag, an ice box filled with goodies and pink little peonies nestled in a plastic wrap. You were especially proud with the flowers.
"When?" I stared in amazement, surprised.
"Got up at six, to do this all for you," you said with that smile that had captured my heart years ago. “开心吗?”
We walked through the gardens together, you carrying the ice box and bag while I clutched the little peonies, until we found it—that same secluded spot beneath the tree where we'd had our third date three years ago. The very place where I'd first started to fall in love with you, watching you laugh as you tried to catch grapes with your mouth. You were surprisingly very good at it.
As you spread out the blanket in the exact same spot, the memories flooded back. You had planned this down to the smallest detail, even choosing the place that meant so much to us. We arranged all the little details you brought from Woolies - sashimi, crackers, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, crackers, camembert, blue cheese, instant noodles - into a beautiful platter.
"来抱抱?" you asked softly, looking intently at me after we finished arranging the platter. I stepped into your arms without hesitation.
Perhaps it was at this point that the guilt hit me like a wave. Here you were, showing me such thoughtfulness, such love, and I had spent weeks and the entire morning nursing resentment and doubt. I collapsed into your arms, tears streaming down my face—not tears of joy, but tears of shame. "I'm so sorry," I sobbed against your chest. "I've been so impatient, so demanding, and you... you did all this for me."
You held me close as I cried, your hand stroking my hair. Then, still holding me, you whispered, “看这是什么。。。”
I pulled back just enough to see you reach into your pocket and pull out a small box. My breath caught as you slowly opened it, revealing the ring you must have spent countless nights or weeks choosing, the rock catching the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves above us.
Suddenly, the garden held its breath. Or perhaps it was just me. The bees paused in their lazy wandering among the hollyhocks. Even the pond seemed to whisper more softly. In that moment, surrounded by generations of carefully tended beauty, you spoke words that transformed everything.
"Would you like to stand up?" you said gently, your voice already thick with emotion.
I rose to my feet, my heart pounding as you slowly lowered yourself onto one knee on the checkered blanket, the ring box held carefully in your hands. Your eyes were already glistening with unshed tears as you looked up at me. When you uttered my full name—every syllable deliberate and filled with love—your voice cracked with emotion.
"Will you marry me?"
Your eyes were red with the intensity of the moment, and I could see your whole heart laid bare in that question.
The world seemed to tilt on its axis. I stood there, completely overwhelmed, my mind struggling to process what was happening. The morning's doubts, the surprise picnic, the guilt, the ring sparkling in the sunlight, you on one knee with tears swelling in your eyes—it was all too much and too perfect at the same time. I felt dazed, like I was watching this moment happen to someone else, unable to fully believe it was real. "Yes," I breathed, nodding my head.
Through happy tears that now mixed relief with pure joy, I saw our future unfold. The morning's doubts dissolved completely, replaced by the overwhelming realisation that what mattered was this moment, this love, this beautiful surprise that showed me. Sunday mornings and shared secrets, storms weathered together, and quiet moments exactly like this one—perfect in their simplicity in the heart of where we fell in love.
The gardens have witnessed countless seasons, countless stories of love begun and renewed. Now they hold ours too, pressed like flowers between the pages of time. Every time we return here, the very air will shimmer with the memory of this day when you asked, and I said yes, and the whole world bloomed around us even in the depths of winter.
Some proposals happen in grand gestures and glittering lights. Ours happened among the crisp grass and golden leaves, with cold air nipping at our cheeks and joy spilling over, as natural and enduring as the perennial roots sleeping beneath the frost, waiting to bloom again come spring—just like our future together.
