So at work today one of my co-workers was talking about how he was going to sue Santa Claus for invasion of privacy. I pointed out that "invasion of privacy" would not be the criminal charge, but that he should sue instead for breaking and entering and for unauthorized surveillance. I then thought about it for a few minutes and realized that one could absolutely invoke castle doctrine (which basically states that it is legal to murder someone who breaks into your house and whom you believe is a threat) against Santa.
While September is the official month of recognition of suicide, every month is a good month to have those hard but crucial conversations. Awareness isn't meant to be just for a month and then forgotten. People suffering from suicidal ideations are used to being forgotten, but that doesn't mean they don't matter. Everyone—whether they are aware of it or not—has someone close to them battling depression; it's just so pervasive. So definitely have those conversations this month, but don't forget the lessons come October 1st. It's a matter of life and death that we don't forget.
Alas, just as I begin to share my various projects, I must go on hiatus. I am beginning a new career and direction for my education and I need to focus on those for a time. I'm not entirely abandoning this blog - I will return eventually, if Tumblr still exists at that time, but it'll be awhile.
So long, and thanks for all the... notes? I don't know how to end this.
[removed]: Why do you feel the need to consider extreme left activists and change your books just to please them? If you start doing that than please consider putting the non binary dolphin gender in one of your books. Pretty sure they are mispresented.
Brandon Sanderson: I will take a more religious response to this one than most of my responses, as I feel it might be meaningful to you in particular.
I feel the need to represent human beings as they exist, have been created, and want to be represented. This is my goal in writing, and it has always been my goal. I do not and have not changed that goal. I want people to represent my faith, my type of person, and my dreams and hopes in their stories accurately--so I want to be certain to do the same for those who read mine, and set the example for the world I want to live in. One where we listen, love, and try to understand rather than deride, belittle, or cry "extremist" when someone explains how they feel.
And so, in my books, I seek to treat people as they want to be treated--and to see the world from a variety of viewpoints. Through this, I understand my fellow human beings better. I am doing my best to BE them for a short time. This is the point of fiction. If it were not my goal, Hrathen wouldn't exist in my very first book.
Beyond that, by representing people different from myself, I seek to understand all of God's creations better. He saw fit to put them in the world. I'd be denying his actions and glory if I excluded them from mine. And if I'm going to include them, you better bet I'm going to do the very best job I can to do it right.
In short, I try to think the best of people. I suggest you try the same.
Lmao did I seriously get called a bootlicker for holding the terrible oppressive opinion of “authors deserve to be paid for their work”? You’re not a radical for distributing other people’s creative work for free you’re just a dick.
I think Americans need to understand how normal it is in other countries to have extremely limited hours of operation to ensure the sanity and health of workers are kept in tact. We are so accustomed and entitled to demanding people’s time that we forget that they’re… y’know… people
