Another Treasure
While working on my epic pre-Spring cleaning ritual I keep finding little treasures—bits and bobs that in some cases I didn’t even realize I possessed.
I have no memory of stitching this sampler. From the date, style and the hand dyed threads I know that I stitched it early on in my experimentation with embroidery.
Tumblr media
Twelve years ago we still lived in Little Rock and I had dipped my toe into what would become an obsession with embroidery when I started leafing through 1970s needlepoint books at a library sale.
Needlepoint is a type of canvas work, a form of embroidery in which yarn is stitched through a stiff open weave canvas. Traditionally needlepoint designs completely cover the canvas. Although needlepoint may be worked in a variety of stitches, many needlepoint designs use only a simple tent stitch and rely upon color changes in the yarn to construct the pattern. Needlepoint is the oldest form of canvas work.

I used a lot of different stitches in this piece. Yes, there is the ever trusty tent stitch. But also: Byzantine stitch, cushion stitch, diamond stitch, small diagonal stitch, eyelet stitch, Parisian stitch, Rhodes stitch, Smyrna stitch, and more!

I was experimenting with natural dying with plant fibers at this time. I’m guessing from what I remember, and the few old photos I found, that these threads were dyed predominantly with tea, coffee, and turmeric—and possibly some rosehips and onion skin.

From top to bottom, left to right: turmeric, onion skins, osage orange bark, rosehips, coffee, and hibiscus.
Tumblr media
Cotton yarn soaked in simmering milk for one hour and then in prepared dye baths with 1 cup of dye, 1/2 tsp alum, and 1/8 tsp cream of tartar.
From left to right: hibiscus, 2 skeins coffee (yes, green with coffee!!!!!), turmeric, beet juice, and onion skins.
Tumblr media
I’m going to have to see if I can use these little bits of notes to replicate the light brown of the border so I can finish this piece. I plan on using it with the spring embroideries since it has two big dogwood blossoms.
I quickly moved away from needlepoint after discovering Slavic folk embroidery, but digging back through old books to identify the stitches in this old piece I’m feeling a whisper of intrigue.

i shall now coin a phrase.
CRAYON NECROMANCY
returning to long abandoned ideas and bringing them back as new art with your current skillset.
necromancy because you are reviving an idea once thought dead, crayon because of its association with Arts and Crafts, the art form practiced by juvenile artists.
these long abandoned ideas are, after all, likely from an entirely different point in your life, when you had a less experienced mindset creating them.
note, Crayon Necromancy does not necessarily change the core of what the idea was. in theory you CAN reboot an idea strongly enough to match your current sensibilities, essentially making a new idea in the process.
HOWEVER, a proper Crayon Necromancer should endeavor to hold true to the core of what their idea stood for.
you are trying to bring back the inspiration of your past self's art, try and understand their headspace while still bringing your own flavor to it.
what do you guys think, am i cooking here?

I know it’s a bit late to protest using AI to copy the Ghibli art style, but I stumbled on some old wip pics of an old storyboarding project. We had to take a movie scene and board it out in a different art style, and I chose the Chrissy and Eddie scene from Stranger Things S4 in the Ghibli style.
I’ll have to track down the rest of the boards, maybe redraw them if I’m feeling real feisty. If this post blows up, I’ll set the boards to the original audio for the delight of all.

SORRY IF I JOIN BUT OLD MAN ALSO SMILE IN YOUR DIALOGUE MODE!!
😂 He does! I'm glad someone remembers this!
He smiles for exactly the same reason I said before, he's simply mean and smiles at the mean things he says
Thanks for reminding me of this project, I really liked working on it but I no longer have free time to do it 🥲
Thanks for your ask! 💖

I kind of think of this one as a companion to my 'Fuck the cistem' piece, and also belatedly pretty perfect for Transgender Day of Visibility.
I was not made to be invisible.

Talk about and old, old, old project. I put together these Now and Later gum wrapper chains back in 2011. I held onto them for ages because I thought they would make a really cute pouch. Finally, I did it. Now, I took some short cuts and just glued them onto the pouch. I am sure I could have come up with a much neater way to finish it... but at this point, it was all about just finishing it.
I was also silly and never took a picture of it finished... I will post that soon!

Wow I can’t believe I found this! It was an old horror storyboard project for one of my classes back in the day. It’s a miracle the whole things still intact! (Full vid on patreon)
