To the jerks defending Gil’s plotline in ME:A,

First of all, I’d just like to say that it’s EXTREMELY telling that, for some of you, your first response to my complaint about a lack of gay content is that gay men should “logically” have been barred from the Andromeda Initiative, as if willingness to stick it to a lady is the only determining factor in a colonization effort’s success.

Secondly, if procreating is SO FUCKING IMPORTANT, then how come Vetra doesn’t have any qualms about hooking up with a human? How come m!Ryder is allowed to bone alien women with impunity, when no child will result? How come nobody lectures f!Ryder for electing to hop on Jaal’s cloaca instead of Liam’s baloney pony? In fact, why are f!Ryder, Cora and Suvi allowed to run around having adventures AT ALL, when they should OBVIOUSLY be strapped to hospital beds, being forcibly pumped full of jizz until their crotchfruit blooms?

Where’s the quest to round up the rebellious females who fled the breeding program? For that matter, how does the breeding program even work? I haven’t had anyone explain it to me.

You seem to think the Nexus is some Republic of Gilead shit, but actually, nobody in the entire Andromeda Initiative gives a single wet fart about breeding. Nobody except Gil.  Nobody except the ONE gay human man in the entire goddamn galaxy and only because his “best friend” has given him a Gender Traitor complex.

Okay, let’s say I accept that. My other big problem is that Gil is now the third exclusively gay male LI BioWare​ has ever written and, just like Dorian and Steve before him, Gil is a big fat lazy cliche whose entire arc revolves around gay-related anxiety, only instead of My Daddy Is Meeeeeeeeen To Me ™, it is I Can’t Make Babies Like A Straight Do ™. And it’s dumb and offensive as fuck.

If Gil actually wanted a family, then fine, but I have yet to see any evidence of that. All I’ve seen is that he feels obligated, because his hag told him to.

And he SHOULDN'T​ feel obligated. Gil is one of what, two/three gay human men in the entire galaxy? Out of a pool of 20,000 (iirc)? The human race will be FINE whether Gil breeds or not. They have advanced technology specifically for this purpose, not to mention cloning and who knows what else.

Not only is this bad characterisation, it's​ bad Sci-Fi!

Like, I realise that Mass Effect is meant to be read as “pulp”, and isn’t trying to be ground-breaking literature​, but come on. Le Guin and her contemporaries were using Science Fiction to toy with concepts of sex, sexuality​ and gender since 1969 AT LEAST.

BioWare is just being lazy, and it’s evident in the fact that gay men get less options AND less content for those options. They don’t even get the same level of care in their design. Not to mention that every alien species BioWare invents (except the Asari, who are a trainwreck for other reasons) have the same sex/gender dichotomy as humans, which is more statistically improbable than ever finding any aliens in the first place.

It’s well past time that LGBT characters were included in sci-fi & fantasy as STANDARD, and not to be fetishised or to be mouthpieces for Gay Issues ™, but as fully realised, three-dimensional characters whose sexuality is incidental.

Or at bare minimum​, they could give us our own, all-male species of blue-skinned bisexual strippers. I PROMISE not to complain about that.

Okay, but as a gay man, queer coding of villains isn’t something to celebrate, and making your first openly gay Disney character the abused yet willing sidekick of man who wants to KIDNAP AND RAPE A WOMAN isn’t something to be glad about either. Making previously queer-coded villains into explicitly gay villains is NOT "respectful representation", it's shit.

disney has some real nerve for this le fou nonsense when howard ashman saved the disney film studios from financial ruin with his own two hands in 1989 & ensured they would be around long enough to make these high budget remakes decades later. like full offense disney if ashman hadn’t 1) saved your company and 2) provided you with the formula you now attempt to replicate you wouldn’t be here raking in millions in profit with rote imitations of his work 20 yrs later. “why does disney need to have gay characters?” bc the man who gave you your entire childhood and disney the longevity to make ugly remakes of his movies would’ve wanted there to be gay characters and not just gay coded narratives by the year of 2017, THAT’S WHY.
