Rani and Baliyo are tigers. They are THE iconic Asian big cat so this is pretty self-explanatory. Janna is also a tiger because she's their grandmother and that was a pretty important element of both her and Rani's character so I wasn't going to change that. I genuinely think I popped off with Baliyo's design ngl.

Nirmala is a dhole/red dog! She already has a very pretty design so I didn't change too much, just a few features to suit the species I changed her to! Dholes are pretty rare animals and it was mentioned Nirmala arrived from outside the tree of life so I thought this seemed like a good choice for her.

Surak was a challenge. Coming up with an idea of him was why this took me so long. Canonically, he is Rani and Baliyo's uncle so going by that, he should be a tiger. However, I kind of want to have another animal as part of the group and iirc, him being related to Rani and Baliyo wasn't particularly relevant? So i made him a water buffalo! Least happy with his design because translating his design elements to a completely different species was a pain and I'm not familiar with drawing bovines.

I looked up what species of owl Ullu was supposed to be and I left more confused than I started. On one wiki, she's stated to be a Scops owl. Alright, I can kind of see that. But on another wiki, it claimed she was an eagle-owl of all things. Found out most people seem to go with the eagle-owl for her species (despite the scops owl making a lot more sense based on her size) so I redesigned her to look more like a Eurasian eagle-owl! Kept the markings minimal so the design wouldn't be too cluttered.

Other really fucked up scenes that are not The Bumble Debaucle in Thunder Rising include;

Thunder's opening dream establishing that "Hawk Swoop is nice and all but she's not the same as the touch of his REAL mother"

Ghost mom telling Thunder directly that his dad didn't abandon him because he's a shitty guy or anything, but because he needs help unlocking the good inside him and Thunder (baby) will make him (adult man) see the light someday.

Gray Wing generally being a really bad "parent" to Thunder, yelling at him, pushing him to reconcile with his "real dad," and then getting upset when Thunder does the things Gray Wing tells him to do.

Moon Shadow's slow and gorey succumbing to his injuries, plus how his corpse rolls into the grave in a weird way causing Tall Shadow to leap in with him wailing and sobbing.

Infected Wound Face Shoving Scene

Clear Sky throwing his son in front of a fox.

Even leaving out things like Misty's slaughter and the fate of her kits, plus the general mental and physical abuse that Thunder goes through to move the plot, the cruelty in this book is off the charts.

WC is sometimes jokingly called "Cat Game of Thrones" but some of this is excessive even for that.

Is it just me or is warriors somehow getting worse about female characters every single new book. Particularly in terms of making everything revolve around romance, oh dear god

Sunbeam and Bristlefrost are the best recent examples of this I think but Leopardstar's super edition had this issue too. Also... I do not like the Frostpaw romance foreshadowing. Can we PLEASE have a female pov who's entire character doesn't revolve around a man.

Istg I should just stick to fanfiction, at least there's less of this shit in them.

Lesbian/bi Vitani is cool and all but honestly I've come to headcanon her as aro/ace! To be fair, her screentime was limited but she didn't show any interest in a relationship like... ever? And I just find it difficult to see her falling for someone? Definitely would be a rare occurrence anyway. It's okay if you disagree with me here, I still do enjoy some of the ships for her but personally I see her as aromantic!

Used to have her as biromantic asexual, not sure when I changed my mind on that but anyway lol

weirdly enough i still get the vibe that Nuka was the only one of her kids Zira actually cared about at all

Kovu is a means to getting revenge and she literally couldn't care less where he goes once she has what she needs from him (a weakened simba) or if he's happy and oh yeah the whole literally scarred him thing

Vitani is the perfect lieutenant ever since childhood, completely dedicated to the cause, loyal, obedient, ruthless, never once jealous over chosen one Kovu and looked after him but also immediately reported his betrayal when he didn't attack simba as planned and Zira definitely trusts her,

and yet the MOMENT Vitani isn't all those things, the moment she says "No, mother" and "Enough" Zira has zero hesitation in threatening to kill her

They're both worth keeping around only as long as they're USEFUL to Zira

know who isn't useful?

Nuka

he's resentful of Kovu, can't be relied on to do as he's told, needs Vitani to drag him around, zero common sense, very poor grasp of what's going on half the time, not an impressive fighter, wasn't even chosen by Scar

He is, in short, contributing very little to Zira's plans

but Zira keeps him around. Her one moment of real emotion other than bitterness or hate is when she's comforting her dying son and mourning his death

compare that with scarring Kovu, driving him away, and grinning as she tells Vitani "If you will not fight, then you will die as well"

like seriously, even before Nuka died trying to kill the lion she hates most, she was already treating him different than his siblings

not that any of that counts for much. still though. i think about it
