Achilles: To Tartaros with fame! My life is more important than all the gifts that dog Agamemnon could give me. There is nothing that will ever make me fight for the Greeks.

Iliad!Zeus to his family when they go to war:
Zeus to Aphrodite: Honey, maybe you should leave this to your sisters?
Zeus to Artemis: Were you being mean, hmmm? Who beat you sweetheart, come I'll give you a hug.
Zeus to Ares: I'm sick of your bloodlust!!
Zeus to Poseidon: For Titan's sake, it's just a wall!
Zeus to Hera: I'M GOING TO STRIKE YOU!! *gets seduced*
Zeus to Athena: You will get your turn! STOP MEDDLING!!
Zeus to Enyo: Oooooohhhh that was sooo good!! YES! RIGHT THERE!! Make them fight! Make them fight!!! AAAHHHHH! *faints out of excitement*
Bonus:
Everyone to Apollo: Please fight. We're bored and we're begging you, please fight.
Apollo, patting Hector on the head: Nuh-uh!

me when people complain about hector killing patroclus: what was he supposed to do. NOT kill an enemy combatant? 🙄
me when achilles kills hector: he did that to personally victimize me.

For some reason I cannot explain, Hera in the Iliad seems to be directed at the readers much more than the other gods. Like yeah Apollo is throwing around plagues, and Aphrodite and Ares are being cutesy whenever they get the chance and Athena is super strong girlboss who wins everything and then you have Hera.
Everything she does is followed by someone giving her some sort of pithy or advice. It's almost as if she's made to do things she should not do as a way to educate other women (or men, Idk if many Greek women could read). It's always like: "your husband will tell you if he thinks you should know something", and "if you disobey your husband you're a/an <insert every horrible name a woman can called>".
Like her being Queen gets her no respect?? Even Iris (who is her definite subordinate) and Artemis (a younger female of her household) have no problem disrespecting her??
#idk it's just a feeling#but it feels *very* pointed#i could be wrong#but it's strange that a queen can be challenged to physical altercations#not only by her husband's child#but by her husband himself#greek mythology#the iliad#homer#iliad#greek gods#greek goddess#zeus#hera#iliadposting#greek myths#tagamemnon

Just found out that Helen was apparently mimicking the voices of the soldiers' wives and trying to sound out the horse. Clever girl, and now I know why all those chapters full of names and genealogy were so important.
#i can already imagine it#she's standing outside the horse#list in hand#and going “oooohh mister-sir son of master-sir you are less appealing to the vultures and more appealing to your wife”#and the men inside desperately trying to catch that one Achaean braincell#that will prevent them from jumping out#it helps that the crowd has thinned#helen of sparta#helen of troy#helen#greek myths#greek mythology#the iliad#homer#iliad#iliadposting#tagamemnon

every time i see posts about how hector just hates paris i lose ten years off my life. are you an only child or something? never had a sibling in your life? yes, of course hector is angry with paris and yes, he'll berate him and call him a coward when paris does infact act like one but i'm sorry you're just simply foolish to think they don't love each other at all.
#my man was like: “you're a coward and an idiot!”#and then three minutes later: “...you're actually not a coward you're just lazy”#(“i love you and i'll fight for you”)#the most big brother ever#he was fighting for and on behalf of paris with his whole life#hector of troy#paris of troy#tagamemnon#the iliad#homer#greek mythology#hector#paris

Wikipedia tells me one of the meanings of the name Andromache is "man-battler".
Andromache is named such that she fights against men. All the men in her family get killed. Her father, her brothers, her husband and even her son. IIRC, in contrast, her mother lives and dies naturally at her father's house. With the exception of Astynax, all the men are killed by Achilles.
I'M TEARING MY HAIR OUT!!!
Homer. Homer I'm shaking you by the shoulders. WHY DOES ANDROMACHE NOT KILL ANYONE WHYYYY??? SUCH HARDSHIP FOR MY GIRL AND SHE CAN'T EVEN KILL PEOPLE IN A WAR??? SHE SHOULD'VE BEEN ALLOWED TO STRANGLE ACHILLES!!!
#((((and let her have sex with women)))) who said that?#<- pls consider not calling me out I've already exposed my crush on hector#(but to be with andromache😳)#((esp if she's killing people))#ANYWAY#*clears throat*#about this tag ->#and the 30k words of a novel i wrote about her are stillll rotting in the drafts. hrrff#<-#pls share it sometime if you are comfortable doing so helen of sparta#I can't promise a thousand ships#but all hector x andromache shippers will sail for you

Everyone in the Iliad is so insanely rich, what with all their irons and bronzes and purples, and somehow all of them want to be captured instead of killed so someone can ransom them out... I was not expecting that tbh. Such faithlessness *sighs*
Idk I expected at least some amount of honour among the men, but I must say, I rather like this grim-dark representation of humans.
#now if only they would leave the women alone#my number 1 beef with the Iliad is the way the women are being treated by the characters#but i guess it is pretty on par with the society back then#iliad#the iliad#iliadposting#homer#greek myths#greek mythology#tagamemnon#achilles#diomedes#patroclus#agamemnon#<- this man needs to die

Reading the Iliad part 9(?)
Nestor is the best and funniest of the Greeks, because Patroclus was like "hey I can't wait, you know how impatient and irritable Achilles is" and Grandpa gives him a three page dissertation about his tragic backstory™️ (ft. Heracles), the Eleans, their history, and how he was Athena's best boy back in his day.
#nestor#nestor of pylos#my grandpa fr fr#i want to talk to him so bad#i just *know* he tells the most exaggerated tales#and they are the best#patroclus#the iliad#homer#iliad#greek myths#iliadposting#greek mythology#tagamemnon

I cannot recommend Heimskringla.no enough
Every original Norse text is digitalised and uploaded. All translations that are creative commons are there. More modern folktales and oral stores are there. Several research papers, analyses, commentary and opinion pieces have been added. And they offer very cheap physical prints of many things that are out of print.
They now have 7600 texts!
Of course most texts are old Norse, Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Finn. But you can find English papers and translations too.

If you want to learn one Scandinavian language I recommend Norwegian. Then you can read Danish and understand Swedish.
