So I loved Ouran High School Host Club, and when I read a brief description of Hana Yori Dango, I thought "oh hey that has very Ouran-style vibes". ("Poor student at rich school encounters the four richest kids.") And I thought "maybe it's inspired by Ouran". No. Hana Yori Dango is about ten years older. And the more I watch it, the more I'm pretty sure that Ouran is inspired by, and directly in conversation with, this specifically.
Anyway. It's from the mid-90s, and the animation is absolutely god-tier for the time. They do stuff like have people talking while their heads are turning. They have ripples on water. It's very impressive... for the time period. There's a lot of subtle errors and stuff. There's things that aren't correct, because no one can do that perfectly every frame for 30 frames a second for 20 minutes.
And then I watched an episode of a recent show. It's obviously at least substantially CGI. You can't instantly tell which parts of a scene are going to be able to move and which are just backdrops. The ripples in water are more subtle and move more naturally and correctly. The animators have new tools that allow them to design a character and then just specify what motions they want from that character; they aren't having to manually think through every body part for every frame they do. Dancing characters are easy, and having four characters do a synchronized dance is easier than having four characters do their own dances.
So I saw a recent post about how people using AI are "afraid of difficulty" and so on. And... You know what, there wasn't a single shred of that argument that wouldn't apply at least as well to all the tooling changes in animation over the last 30 years.
And I don't honestly know what I think about this yet, but it really feels to me like it's fine if people want to use tools to let them make animation that's smoother and better and prettier and more accurate than they could have without the tools? And I'm aware that people who do this may end up with less ability-to-draw-people-freehand than people who are drawing every individual frame. But also I'm not sure that I care about "ability to draw people freehand" as a terminal goal. I think that digital art lets us do cool things more easily and that sometimes this is good. I also think that it is cool if people want to spend time developing manual skills that let them do things a machine could do, because people are allowed to have hobbies.

“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes ‘Boots’ theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

defeating the depression beast by pseudo-willpower because the alternative is even more troublesome.
like i had (1) therapy session. i thought it was just motivation and executive dysfunction and id be told motivating things and some tips and be on my way. but she went straight to “should we do a psychiatry consult and get a prescription?” and.
if I don’t get myself out of this rut. that would mean. more therapy sessions - more cost - restrictions if i get back on meds - more moving my life around to fit all of this. and that’s a motivating factor for me to not give into the depression beast. really fucking hope this sticks and works to break my (non)motivation cycle and get into the zone when I was driven.

persistance is the word.
it may feel shitty while doing it or starting it. but it also feels shitty not doing
if feeling shitty anyway, might as well choose the discomfort of facing it than the guilt of failure

#this 100 percent#another analogy I can think of is calculators#people talk about ai making people dumb etc but calculators have done the same thing#made tedious parts of the process easier#ml tools also grouped under ai are doing the same#and education helps to some extent - talking about neural networks and ml tools#but yeah. everything called ai and ai bad sentiment does not help

It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.
There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!

that weird abstract emotion where you feel as though you’ll always be an outsider, an observer, even if you’re in the thrust of things and among others. like some tongue rubbing itself at the base of your skull, reminding you of the disconnect. like there is some flexible wall of glass blocking you off from everyone around you. like you’re some kind of strange creature which is only pretending to be human.
